Having read reviews I thought I would be in safe hands so to speak......oh no.....worst place I've ever stayed and I am a frequent hotel stayer across the UK. I know the owners are working to progress the hotel but in my eyes yes keep the bar open to genarate income but close the hotel until renovation is complete because I for one won't be coming back due to my experience. Being met with the strong smell of paint wasnt the best. Receptionist on arrival was helpful but looked like she was just out of bed. We headed up to our room which first impressions were you get what you pay for. Light shade in bathroom was full of dead insects. Cobweb from wall light to ceiling. We headed out for dinner after a couple of drinks in the hotel bar as we knew kitchen/restaurant in hotel wasnt available. On return back to our room it was like a fridge...no heating on, bed squeaked with the slightest movement which was really annoying. We had very noisy neighbours, chatting and laughing (rock on for making the most of your stay) and probably didn't realise how thin the walls were. Windows totally didn't blank out any noise coming from outside it was like the windows were left open! I then had to listen to i presume the guy that was having a good chat and laugh earlier, snoring all night....it was like he was in the same room!!! My worst night ever and I couldn't wait to leave at 7 am. If I hadn't had a couple of drinks night before I would have let a lot earlier. Very...
Read moreI'm writing about the bar, I didn't stay overnight.
Overall, it was a mixed bag. Three of us ended up here on a Sunday lunchtime as most of Grantown appeared shut. The bar was quiet, with a solitary drinker and a couple. It was clean and nice and well cared for with an easy ambience.
I said hello to the lady, who kind of responded, and ordered drinks. The beer was delicious and well cared for. The selection of gin was broad and the G+T came with ice and a slice without any fuss. I explained we wanted something to eat too and suggested we could run a tab, but it's definitely payg. On the upside, the drinks were nice and amongst the cheapest I've bought for quite a while.
The menu is strange, main courses don't come with the usual accompaniments, so you build your own plate by adding things. We ordered a cannelloni dish, a burger and a soup. These came in good time but were disappointing. The cannelloni may have been homemade but tasted like an instant dinner, the burger was a dry stiff patty in a dry bun. The soup was the highlight. The menu says the burger comes with salad, so I expected at least a garnish but there was none. To be fair to the hotel I didn't point this out so maybe I was just unlucky, but it didn't look anything like the picture on the hotel's website!
People in small family businesses work so hard. I would have liked to give...
Read moreI stayed the night here at short notice as I was trying to travel through the highlands before Storm Eunice hit. The team were super friendly and welcoming and put me at ease, especially because I must have looked like a train wreck having had to change all my plans and drive 8 hours across the country at the drop of a hat!! The room was an absolute steal - very reasonably priced, clean, modern and with a really nice mattress too. The breakfast was well worth paying for and the team graciously let me work in the breakfast room the day after (fab wifi too!). An extra special mention to the lovely chef for giving me snow advice, parking suggestions and even bringing me a coffee whilst I was working. He really went above and beyond and I really hope this review gets back to him. He's a great asset to your team! I will definitely be staying here again in the future - it's the same price as a campsite you can't go wrong! (as a side note, it is a bit noisy at night with doors slamming and it seemed like a herd of elephants going up and down the stairs on occasion but I've spent four times as much for a hotel in London and had the exact same experience and I don't think the owners can control unruly guests so I wouldn't knock a star off, just being...
