I spent 4 nights at Rooms at 31 whilst visiting family in the area. It is ideally situated within Stonehaven, a short walk to the seafront and a pleasant (but steep) walk to the war memorial and Dunottar Castle.Stonehaven itself has everything you might need for a short stay: places to eat, groceries etc.Rooms at 31 was clean and adequate for my needs. There were a few minor issues in the room which I have already contacted the owner about, but this did not adversely affect my stay.Breakfast is a self-serve affair with access to cereals, bread/toast, packaged morning goods, hot drinks and juice. The advantage of this set-up is that you can have breakfast at any time and it's not restricted to limited serving times as you would usually have in a B&B.It would have been useful to have had a mini fridge in the room, and access to a microwave, perhaps, for being able to heat food when eating out is not possible/desirable. It would also have been nice to feel that the breakfast room was usable outside of breakfast instead of feeling I needed to eat my takeaway in my room.Overall, I found the stay rather impersonal, not seeing anyone else for my entire stay, except for a very short encounter one morning in the breakfast room with whom I suspected may have been the owner. If I hadn't been visiting family, it would have been a rather lonely stay. This is not a fault, merely my preference. I can see how it would work well for businesses travellers or anyone who prefers the self-checkout in a supermarket and not dealing with other...
Read moreThis place is through and through a self-serve place. We booked a room on short notice during a road trip. Right after booking I got an email telling me that there is a key box next to the door and the code to open it. My mum was glad I was with her, she usually struggles with things like that. The place had a hostel feel, big kitchen and breakfast room on the ground floor and a couple of rooms and a shared bathroom on the 1st floor. I didn't realize the bathroom was shared while booking, but might be I over read it as well. The room itself was quite big and clean. Only the walls were rather thin. The bathroom was also spacious and clean. Breakfast the next day was also self-served and was very basic. Mainly a lot of packed sweets from the supermarket. Wouldn't book breakfast here again, but rather look for a café in town. At departure just leave the key. That's it. So if you rather have as little human contact as possible and be independent then it's your place to be. Location is good, in the center of the small town Stonehaven. Easy to leave from here towards the trail to Dunnottar castle or to the beach and Aunty Betties Ice cream. Parking is possible along the...
Read moreOn our way to Anstruther, we have made a stop at Scotland's northeast coast quiet town by the name of Stonehaven, and we slept over at the Rooms at 31 hotel.
We liked this hotel very much becuase of it's concept which was new to us, since it was the first time that we actually stayed in a hotel which is being run almost by the guest's themselves. Meaning, a self service based hotel, where you get to pick up your room keys by yourself and serve yourself breakfast too. The reservation was of course booked in advance online.
We arrived late in the evening and we were really surprised to find the keys of our room already waiting for us at the desk in the lobby.
In the morning we found the dining room all ready with a self-service based breakfast. There was a nice variety of cereals, other foods and fresh drinks to start the morning.
Besides loving the marvellous idea of the self-served concept, which as mentioned above was a very new experienced to us, the room was also nice and very clean and we were very satisfied...
