We had a lovely visit here on a Sunday evening. The main restaurant was relatively busy with most customers appearing to opt for the buffet. We went for the a’La cart menu as their choices were too good not to. Our starters were delicious and can highly recommend the finger bite sizzler. My hubby ordered pakora which didn’t come with any sauce or dips but the waitress was kind to bring one over from our poppadom selection. We went for some of their house special curry flavours and although tasted nice, they were both heavily salted which took away from the overall flavour. We pre-booked the corridor train seating area and were the only customers seated there. It was quirky and had a definite feeling of being in an old train. Only down side was it is very cramped and your sitting very upright which was getting uncomfortable by the end. It was a great experience though. The main restaurant was very bright and open overlooking the gardens and would likely ask to be seated there next time. Our female server was excellent throughout our visit. Real downside was as most customers were eating from the buffet our dishes were cooked so quickly. We were in no way rushed but we were amazed how quickly we ate and left. We had a really lovely meal and was very impressed with the decor as service. We felt each dish was very fairly priced and in line if not cheaper than other Indian restaurants. Good food selection, excellent service, beautiful building and definitely...
Read moreWas really looking forward to going to this restaurant. I love the art deco period and this restaurant was originally the Carron tea rooms built in the 1930s. There are two entrances, the one that we used, which takes you straight into the dining area, is an open room with large original art deco windows. The other entrance takes you into a beautiful art deco bar area with comfy sofas. The corridor between the bar and restaurant has cleverly been designed as a train (see photos) giving you the experience of travelling on a train in India. This is a great idea but there was no-one sitting there during our visit. Our vegan requests were not an issue and the food was lovely, although the bhuna could have had more spice. It would have been nice to have had another option for non alcoholic drinks such as a cider or bottle of nozecco. Staff were attentive and professional, but could have been more welcoming and would have been nice to get a goodbye when we left the restaurant. Those are the personal touches thar make us want to go back. £45 bill was really good value for money. I read that there was a lot of money spent on restoring the art deco features in the restaurant, and i expected it to have more of a wow factor than in did, but it was lovely to see the mirror rumoured to have been designed by Picasso himself. Hidden behind the boring brown toilet doors are some lovely art deco toilets. Well worth a trip to this restaurant....
Read moreStunning building, with two entrances on two distinctly different sides. The one at the restaurant dining room end has a kind of 'art-deco' feel - a large, well lit room with large old fashioned metal framed Crittal windows - which look on to a garden area. The other entrance is a more conventional street entrance, with a bar area and a long decorated corridor. Despite looking very busy, we got a small table right away. Service was attentive and friendly - even jovial at times. The head waiter took some gleeful pride in guessing what we wanted - almost correctly. He memorised our order and got one bit of it wrong when it came - a chicken instead of a vegetable dish, but that was okay. We let it go. The food did take a wee while to arrive, which we didn't mind. They provided some nice complimentary pakora type snacks to keep us going. My wife loved her chicken dish. My lamb kebab dish was less good, being comprised of some lean but also some incredibly fatty inedible portions of spring lamb. The good bits were good, but overall it was disappointing. The total bill was about what we expected and I was able to relate my slight disappointment to both the head waiter and the chef, who took note to look into the preparation of the meat. We still enjoyed our visit and would...
