On it's way to being a good hotel. Feels like they were possibly mid-renovation when pandemic started. In its current state it is overpriced. The rooms are a bit of an unfinished mess. Mismatched doors, broken toilets, showers that flood the floor, TV aerial cables hung across the light fittings. The duvets were also so heavy it was hard to sleep, totally inappropriate for summer months. They have lots of staff but the staff don't appear to have had any training yet as service is very poor in places, especially the restaurant. On the night I ate there, there was a group of staff stood at the entrance in a huddle most of the night talking among themselves and paying little attention to customers. When they did move through room they would look at the floor avoiding eye contact. A young man, who I asked what beers they had, told me "I haven't memorised them". Fair enough but go and grab a menu then, don't say things like that to a customer unless you have the wit and charm to carry it off as not just seeming very rude. On the upside, the morning staff were much better and attention at breakfast was much more professional and pleasant experience.

King Suite furnishings very nice. Firm bed. Bathroom lighting very bad for makeup (dim mirror side lights, one overhead behind). THE SHOWER HAS NO DOOR. The latest trend, but really? Water splashes out, nice draft to keep you cold. 🤨 Sunday buffet was mediocre. Plates are not warmed, so most food is cold by the time you reach the table. Drip coffee was awful. Absolutely no other places in town were open Sunday morning (Jac-o-Bites Cafe was listed as open, but was actually closed). Staff were friendly and competent. When asked about espresso drinks, Front Desk clerk went to bar area and provide a nice Macchiato. Otherwise, everything is clean and tidy. Would recommend for mid-level travellers.

What a wonderful hotel near the train and ferry stations. The hotel was comfortable and clean with a spacious bedroom and balcony. If the weather had been better we could have enjoyed it. Dining at the hotel was a great experience at dinner. The mussels were the best I’ve had in Scotland all summer!! Breakfast was in a lovely dining room and what we did have was good. We did not understand how important early dining was so when we arrived 45 min before breakfast service was over, they had run out of many dishes. However, their kindness and service were the stars here. Highly recommend staying and dining here if you are traveling through.

Our multigenerational family of 10 (ages 14-78 yrs young😉) stayed for only 1 night while we waited to take the ferry to Skye the next day.  The hotel looks quintessentially “Scottish Highlands”-esque from the front desk, the bar, the big main staircase & the lobby/gathering area on the main floor. We were treated to a live local band (they were great!!) as the icing on the cake!||Pros:|1. Reasonably priced||2. Comfy beds||3. Restaurant (EXCELLENT!!!) & Bar on site||4. Clean||5. And the MOST-IMPORTANT PRO— was the young lady at the Front Desk.  I believe her name started with a V-?  Management should absolutely give her a huge raise!!!  Not only did she check us in, she was a rock-star helping us with a few of the not-so-great things (see below). On top of that, she was everywhere!!  Helping at the bar, serving tables in the Restaurant, etc. She truly understood excellent customer service & did her very best!!!  The Hotel is VERY lucky to have her!!!||Cons:|1. Much older/a smidge more shabby-than-chic / some threadbare spots on the stairs / well-used sofas & chairs & NO LIFT ( I mention this b/c while we knew this ahead of time, the Hotel’s definition of “a few steps” and ours are miles apart. When asked where rooms would be located, we were told there were “just a few steps to get to the 1st & 2nd floors.” Lugging 50+ lb “international travel-sized” suitcases up 2 - 3 flights of stairs was NOT what we were expecting — especially since one of our family members has some mobility issues and uses a cane.  Had we known this, we would have chosen at least 1 room on the ground floor.  ||2. One NON-Smoking room (due to allergies & asthma issues, we only ever book Non-Smoking Rooms) had had a prior guest who smoked, and seemingly nothing could be done. No offers to switch rooms or use a fan to bring in fresh air…nothing…||3. One room was a literal SAUNA due to the room heater being left on HIGH + a malfunctioning radiator in the hallway. The windows had been “secured” so they could only open a few inches.  The young lady at the Front Desk was wonderful in trying to fix things…she made four trips up & down the stairs & a long hallway with various extension cords & a fan. It was quite cool outside, so if we had been able to open the window fully, everything would have been fine. But I guess they had windows with only a few inches of clearance for security reasons.  ||4. The next morning, there was confusion about breakfast because apparently, we were supposed to have ordered in advance. This was never explained to us.||5. Check-out is at 11 AM. Due to a change in our schedule, we asked if we could check out at 11:30 AM instead. We were told NO—not possible. So consider this: We had checked in at 7:30 PM the night before, booked five rooms, had an expensive dinner for 10 people in their restaurant, and chunked down a nice amount of money in the bar afterwards. (Our reason for requesting the later check out was NOT due to being hungover btw). We are a no-fuss /no-muss group. Very understanding that things happen. However, in my experience working in hospitality, a better form would have been to grant the 30-minute late-checkout.||As we sat in the lobby, having promptly checked out of every room by 11 AM,  with our big pile of luggage for the next 30 minutes until our tour guides arrived, a few folks got coffees & breakfast pastries from a little food truck outside. We were then told we couldn’t sit and eat in the lobby. “Outside food” (purchased outside the hotel) was not permitted. I explained we had just checked out & were waiting for our ride.  It took a minute or two with some additional explanation, but the gentleman said, “Oh, I guess that’s okay.”  ||Even with such a long CONS list, I’d return to the West Highland Hotel. There are very limited options in Mallaig & this spot was fine for an overnight before the ferry ride. I would splurge for the more expensive, nicer rooms because those...

We really enjoyed our overnight stay at the hotel with friends. We had booked 2 cosy twin rooms which were of a reasonable size and spotlessly clean. We all slept very well before our morning Calmac ferry trip to South Uist. Unfortunately we had to skip breakfast, and dinner the night before, but could see that the restaurant was popular and busy.|The hotel does clearly point out that it does not have a lift and that some of the rooms are reached by climbing a number of stairs. With this in mind I requested that the rooms be on the lowest floor possible and with walk in showers. As far as I could see it looked as if the rooms with walk in showers were on the lower floors. After checking in we went up to the rooms and fortunately only had to climb the main stairway to find that the rooms were a short distance along the corridor after going down a few steps. We are all 70 plus and we normally only take a small overnight bag into older hotels.|Having checked out the rooms we headed down to the bar and ordered some drinks which we enjoyed sitting on the sunny outside terrace.|It was good to see that the bar was partly manned by seasonal workers from around the world. I think they have been sadly missed in recent years as businesses struggled to provide basic service opening and tourists like us struggled to find places to eat.|We look forward to...

We paid £360 as £120 per night and we got: -small room with 2 beds, a tiny window and a small TV (laptop size) in a corner -very dirty. From the first moment when we got into the room we noticed an unpleasant smell (especially from the carpet and one of the drawers); it was an odd smell difficult to describe: like goat cheese, dirty socks, wet dog or puke. We believe that the person who had the room before caused some trouble and the room was not cleaned properly after. We struggled to fall asleep as the smell was disgusting. mouldy bathroom, especially the ventilation the bedding smell like dump (dried improperly) from the first night. When we asked the receptionist to change them as they smell, we were told they don't change the bedding daily. -in the 3rd day room service skipped our room, even if we specifically asked . The room service was done at 7 pm after we complainant about the bedding (the room was tidied up a bit, but still the same smelly sheets) wifi signal very low the restaurant looked clean, food was fresh and an excellent service. There's a huge discrepancy between the services are offered by restaurant and the hotel rooms ( the restaurant is superior). also, we can smell smoke and fish from the kitchen from our room, especially in the evening very noisy, we could hear far to well all our room...
