After residing in this accommodation for nearly a year, I have compiled a comprehensive list of its advantages and disadvantages. Before I begin, I must mention that they provided me with an uncleaned room, and regarding my report I had to clean it myself. Since the room hadn’t been painted before, there are still some wide yellow lines on the ceiling.
Upsides: Clean Common Areas: The common areas in the building are really clean, and by reporting any sort of problem to reception, they will promptly step in to sort it. Friendly Staff: The staff members are nice and friendly. Enchanting yard: The yard is lovely and offers a variety of amenities that can be enjoyed regardless of the weather. Proximity to City Center: Very close to the city centre, City Road, and Clifton Street, so you have access to a wide range of supermarkets.
Downside: Noise Pollution: The most significant challenge I encountered was persistent noise throughout the year. The building, particularly blocks A and B, is situated adjacent to a school, resulting in disruptions during school hours. Additionally, occasional morning noise from the corridors and the presence of teenagers skateboarding on the street between the school and the building contribute to a lack of tranquility, even on weekends. Unpleasant Odors: The building’s design allows the smell of cooking to permeate the rooms (maybe just in my room in block A) Limited Parcel Collection Service: Unlike many other accommodations in this area that offer all-day and all-night parcel collection services, this building only provides collection after 6 p.m. and all day on weekends. So if you back to your room early, you have to wait and go to reception later. Inadequate Gym Facilities: The gym appears modern and well-equipped, but in practice, it lacks essential amenities such as a bar, unlike other accommodations with similar rental rates in this area. Unutilized Studio Room Space: Studio rooms are generously sized, yet they often remain underutilized due to their lack of practical storage solutions, such as closets, rather than being designed in a manner that prioritizes decorative over functionality. Room Facilities: My studio room electric hob timer has a maximum time limit of 15 minutes. This is likely the standard for this model. Once the timer expires, the hob must be turned off and the user must remain nearby to...
Read moreYou get what you pay for, which in this case is unfilled student accommodation that is let out as holiday apartments. It was fine for what I needed - 2 nights close to the city centre and transport links - but it was pretty noisy at night and at 2am I found myself in the terrace yard with several others after my smoke alarm was set off by plumes of smoke travelling up the corridor. The explanation given was that someone had been trying to make toast. I can only assume they were using a bonfire to do it. There were no apologies made and no attempts to curtail the noise levels from what I could tell. My room had no kettle , just a box with a nice photo of what I should've had and the combi oven was not user friendly which made me understand the bonfire scenario a bit better I must say. No tea towel or any other way to dry dishes etc other than your own bath towel. No tv either which is what really makes you feel you're just staying in an empty property. On the plus side though you are close to everything you could possibly need, the property had taken adequate steps to create a Covid compliant venue, the wifi signal is really very good and I had no issues streaming movies or using zoom for video chats. My kettle issue was resolved quickly by a clearly over worked desk clerk (the only one I saw actually so give that girl a medal!) I asked the poor girl for a dish cloth and was told there was nothing left to provide (?) Still my bath towel did make a great dish cloth and doubled up as a bath towel when I wanted to use the single tiny complimentary pot of shampoo & showergel in one that was not sealed and looked as though it had been refilled. I will say this though. My room was impeccable clean. It was literally SPOTLESS. So in short this place is great for a short stay, Clovid compliant, close to everything you need with clean facilities and great wifi. But bring your own tea towel and...
Read moreI stayed at The West Wing from September 2022 - June 2023, and overall my experience there was great. The reception and security staff are friendly and helpful, and are quick to help when there is a problem. Additionally, they occasionally offer treats to residents like cans of Sprite and Dr Pepper, and cookies. As for the building itself, it is modern, kept very clean, has great security measures, and there are stairwells and lifts in every block. There is a free gym for residents to use, which is kept clean and has a designated cleaning time, a TV lounge, private dining room, study pods, table-tennis tables, a pool table, quiet study area, laundry room, and a lovely courtyard with deckchairs. In each flat, there is a kitchen with fridge-freezers, an oven, microwave, dishwasher, and a lounge area with a TV, sofa, and table. Each bedroom has an en-suite bathroom and plenty of storage. Its location is great - just a 10 minute walk from Cardiff city centre, 20 minutes from Cardiff University’s Student Union and Lidl, and less than 5 minutes from the nearest pub. The nearest hospital and GP service is just across the road at Cardiff Royal Infirmary.
There were a couple of issues but nothing unfixable. For a few days in March 2023, there was an issue with the water supply due to a fault from Welsh Water, but reception helped with this by providing bottled water, to residents who asked, on the first night. It was annoying but fixed relatively quickly. The fire alarm frequently goes off, but I think this is people not knowing how to cook properly, rather than a fault with the alarm. In the laundry room, they use Circuit Laundry which can make living costs add up, but this is a minor inconvenience.
Despite the small number of problems, I would definitely recommend The West Wing to...
