Visited the museum yesterday (31/08/2024) and felt I had to update my review below, as the art collection has changed so much. We are now 3 years later, and the superb collection of art from the mid 19th century to today has been comprehensively trashed. Most of the great works, Bacon, Freud, Hockney, Ceri Richards, Michael Andrews, Millet, Corot, the big Renoir, the Van Gogh, the Gaudier-Brzeskas (of which this gallery has a magnificent collection)...I could go on...all gone, to be replaced by a huge show on the Welsh valleys and some third rate welsh contemporary artists. Basically it's been 'woked' comprehensively by a director who clearly hasn't a clue about art cares nothing for it and is flogging a political agenda. What a crying shame to see one of the great art collections of the world treated this way. An utter disgrace....she should be ashamed of herself, but on the contrary she's no doubt proud of her achievement.
Although it's mentioned on the NMWales website, it's not prominent, but be warned....most of the painting section is currently closed. What remains open as of 20th May 2021 is a mere shadow of what the museum normally displays. Very very disappointed in my visit today.
However under normal conditions the NMWales has in my opinion the finest collection of art in the UK outside of the National gallery london....indeed it's world-class. I was completely blown away by the extent of it.....quite simply important examples from just about every major international artist from the last two hundred years...oh and yes, throw in an important Rembrandt for good measure. Then there is the Natural History section....I should say this is actually, although obviously much smaller, better than the Natural History Museum London on all levels.. Astonishingly good. Get the idea? This Museum really should be...
Read moreThis place is wonderful! I came here mid August and had a great time! They had a promotion running where you could enter for free and someone like me could not miss it ! I went in with not much and came out with a lot! I didn’t expect it to be so beautiful! The education and history this museum provides is crazy! I know they are currently getting work done on the roof so there is a few parts blocked off, but oh my! Everything is so beautiful! The sculptures and the artists that are in this master gallery is astonishing! Not only that but everything is so tidy and organised, I knew what was going on by all the small text boxes and small TVs surrounding me, especially in the area about space - they really made it feel like you were in the space environment, same for the dinosaurs and even the minimalistic designs of the place they held sculptures, it was all very fantasy like as every room you went in, you got a mood or vibe that really further connected you to your surroundings.
I’m going to guess quite a few parents of children are thinking of coming here! And I would recommend it, but I would more recommend it on the science part as the science part had many small activities for the children to do on tables spread across and little coin machines etc. Please do make sure you kids don’t touch anything as these things are quite valuable and that’s why I’m saying with the art area they may want to grab and hold onto things they shouldn’t. So keep that in mind when going to the art section as there is a glass or a painting that could possibly get knocked down at every corner.
I would overall really really recommend it! I forgot to mention but they also have a little gift shop so if you come with kids bring a bit of money with you or else they will nag you! Thank you for...
