Our recent stay at Hotel La Tour was unfortunately quite disappointing, especially considering the high price point.
Upon arrival, check-in started off well with one very friendly staff member. However, things quickly took a negative turn when we were abruptly stopped by a member of management before even completing check-in. We were informed—quite rudely—that we couldn’t take our expensive, spotless road bikes into the hotel room. Despite having stayed at many hotels across the UK with our bikes before, this was the first time we encountered such a restriction. From the information provided, it didn’t even appear to be an official hotel policy.
To make matters worse, the first suggestion offered wasn’t to accommodate the bikes safely within the hotel, but rather to lock them directly outside the hotel in a public area, leaving them completely exposed to potential theft—an unacceptable solution for high-value bikes. We were then lectured about the cost of the hotel carpets and the expense of hiring cleaners, as if we were going to disrespect the property and ruin the carpets, despite the fact that our bikes were absolutely spotless. This was openly insinuated and spoken aloud as justification for their refusal. We were also asked to place bags under the tyres to “protect” the carpet, which was absurd considering wheelchairs and muddy shoes don’t receive the same treatment. This unnecessary situation delayed our check-in and left us feeling very unwelcome right from the start.
The room itself was adequate but quite small for the £115 per night price tag (or upwards of £150 without discounts). The bed was comfortable, but that’s where the positives ended. The shower had almost no water pressure, making it practically unusable for a refreshing experience. To add further frustration, the iron provided in the room was damaged and had residue burnt onto the soleplate, which I only noticed after it almost ruined one of my t-shirts. Completely unacceptable for a hotel of this standard.
The restaurant was another letdown. Food was massively overpriced for what you get, and breakfast was a complete joke. Options were extremely limited—mainly greasy fried foods—and healthier choices were practically non-existent. You couldn’t even pre-order something like an omelette or poached eggs unless the restaurant was quiet, and even then, you had to personally approach the chef and wait around, disrupting your meal entirely. On top of that, restaurant staff would lean across you while clearing tables instead of walking around, which is far from the standard you’d expect at a hotel charging these rates.
Also worth mentioning is the Sky Bar decor. For a hotel of this price, it was quite absurd to see the entire space filled with cheap-looking plastic artificial trees and plants—nothing authentic or natural about it. It really cheapened the atmosphere and felt out of place for what’s supposed to be a high-end experience.
Lastly, be aware there’s no parking at the hotel, though they do offer some validation to make nearby parking slightly cheaper.
Overall, Hotel La Tour feels massively overpriced for what it delivers—poor shower facilities, a terrible breakfast experience, mostly unfriendly or poorly trained staff (with a few exceptions), and unnecessary complications that completely soured our stay. Would not recommend if you’re looking for comfort, value, or...
Read moreI stayed here for a few days this week.
I’d say it’s about a 3.5 rating in my opinion just being let down Bt a few things really.
Obviously you would expect flawless service for £130 a night really, but this wasn’t the case.
Hotel location was good central to quite a lot of bars and restaurants, but also a 10-15 walk from some others.
Gym - pretty good and upmarket. Water machine didn’t work that was a bit poor, but they did provide botties of tap water.
I would have expected and sauna and jacuzzi really in a hotel of this level
Sky bar very good views and Dan the bar manager was a great guy very friendly. It’s a shame that his staff didn’t replicate the same level of professionalism really particularly the young black girl.
She had a really bad attitude and had the audacity to give me a dirty look when I was looking for a seat in the bar area.
She clearly needs a lesson in how to behave professionally in front of customers including her style of behaviour.
Very poor in my opinion.
I noted a couple more younger staff working in the hotel who really lacked any friendliness or ability to communicate in a welcoming way.
Maybe the hotel needs to invest some much needed training on some staff including the lady at reception today who again wasn’t a great communicator wheh I explained some of the issues.
The other staff were really good and the lad who checked me in was very professional and welcoming, the maid who cleaned my room was an absolute lovely smiley lady, Dan the bar manager and some of the breakfast staff were very nice including the black lady and gentleman who cooked me perfect poached eggs each morning from the kitchen (very friendly staff indeed)
The bar prices were a bit pricey at £7.10 a pint and the food menu was equally overpriced, hence I chose to eat out each night based on the pricing scheme.
Much better value busting places like Turtle bay or numerous food eateries in the shopping centre down the road.
The breakfast was a good choice to be fair, but the coffee was terrible, equally things like the orange juice running out should be checked regular as part of a breakfast service.
The breakfast view from your table looking out into Milton Keynes is very good indeed - I really enjoyed the breakfast view.
The rooms were reasonably comfy, but mattress and pillows far too soft waking up with a sore back each day.
The shower pressure was pretty poor and no hand wash gel at the sink, but a bar of soap instead not great really.
The walls are very thin with one of the neighbouring rooms having their tv on at 5.30 the morning disturbing my sleep on 2 days.
I was looking forward to a lie in on the last day, but then a fire alarm went off with a screaming message without any warning in the room to exit the hotel.
I phoned reception straight away, but no reply, got dressed went down to find out it was a false alarm!!
So that was 3 days in a run without a good sleep.
No parking at the hotel which again wasn’t great, but you can pay for parking in the multi storey next door.
All in all it wasn’t a great experience given the high price.
I had friends staying in the holiday inn down the rd who tell me it was very good all round.
I would be keen hearing feedback from the hotel...
Read moreNice hotel but you need to work it all out for yourself as the staff don't seem to have received any training.
This was a bit of a test case really as we live in MK and we were kicked out of our house due to our teenager's party ;). It looks a nice hotel and definitely more upmarket than the local Premier Inn, hence the premium. We couldn't really fault the room or the hotel itself. It's brand new and finished to a reasonable specification. It's also located right in the centre next to the theatre district, shopping and Campbell Park so plenty to do. The Xscape is also 5 minutes away.
Upon arrival we checked in and the chap asked us if we'd travelled by car, which we had. Other than advising on parking restrictions directly outside he failed to advise on local pricing (there is significantly cheaper parking nearby). Also, the multi storey slap next door is only £2 all day Sunday and 24 hours so a much better option, when outside is £2/hour. Definitely one to watch out for if visiting MK for the first time.
I also asked about the bar as it's on the top floor and has fantastic views across MK. "Oh we're REALLY busy tonight I'm afraid" in a tone that was basically advising me not to go. We were dressed smartly (shirt/shoes) so not sure what the issue was but decided to go up anyway to find it was half full. I'm not sure quite what his agenda was but perhaps my ugly mug didn't fit! Who knows but is hardly promoting or trying to increase business.
At no time was I advised on the gym or facilities. The gym is small but very nice with eco equipment. Well worth a visit for a morning workout.
At breakfast we visited the restaurant, having not booked. This was ok but front of house gave no explanation of how the restaurant worked or if there was table service (there isn't). We're not divas but in most hotels, front of house will go through the basics at least. Sure you can work it out and this ultimately isn't a problem but I don't expect this for a hotel that's pitching itself as it is. Personally I've had significantly better service at a Premier Inn.
The breakfast itself was good, with a broad selection of continental, cooked English, fruit, pastries and cereal. Coffee was terrible though with what tasted like UHT milk. At the time of writing, breakfast is £18, which is steep and note that this includes a 10% service charge that's a bit scandalous given you don't receive any service. That's not a complaint but factual as the staff don't serve you other than to clear the table. There is no option (that we were told about anyway) of just having a cup of tea or coffee. At the moment you place your buttocks on a seat, someone slaps the bill on your table. Very odd.
So overall a mixed bag and a hotel I can't...
