Thought I'd try this hotel as it was ideally located to where I needed to be. I should point out from the outset that this IS a reasonably priced hotel, which is clean and adequately presented. That's probably where I'd stop with the compliments.
Stepping into this hotel is like stepping into a thirty year time-warp where you're instantly transported to the late 80s / early 90s. I forgot to add 'atmosphere void'. In fact let's wind it back to the carp ark (did that one on purpose) - if you own a 90s car, this place is perfect. If you have pretty much any modern car beyond a super-mini in size, good luck with keeping straight door panels.
The foyer is a mix between distasteful decor and a somewhat weird choice of 'hung art'. The dome above reception is really quite something. If you imagine the Sistine Chapel done on a budget by a 10 year old under the guidance of a failed art teacher, you're in the ballpark.
My room was situated on the first floor. That might have been a plus if it weren't for two noticeable things... firstly... as you walk down the corridor, I dare you to not start thinking of The Shining.. redrum... redrum... Secondly, and possibly more importantly, WHY FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, when there were no more than 12 guests, put me on the car park side of the hotel and not the much more attractive Lakeside view (hence the Hotel name)??
So... slept well enough in the enormous bed, which was comfortable and clean. I'm glad I brought my own coffee and tea bags... which leads me to... breakfast...
Constructively speaking, the management team would do well to have a look at the widely spread competition. Without even tasting it, I knew the coffee would terrible. I wasn't let down. Any decent hotel is now offering coffee machines using actual coffee beans or ground coffee, not Tesco's value range dried speciality. Fortunately you can't get a prepacked breakfast cereal wrong.
The apple juice was like sucking on a jelly babies' jock strap. Awful... I'm not actually sure there was much actual apple in the 'juice'. I wasn't brave enough to try the orange...
You can't go wrong with a cooked breakfast, can you? WRONG. Eggs that I'm sure were runny at some point three hours ago.. sausages that looked cheap, so I didn't even bother. Two rashers of bacon left that look like they may have looked at a frying pan, but not actually been in it. So, that leaves me with mushrooms, hash brown, beans (see egg comment) and half a 'cooked' tomato. No more than a mouthful of each was sampled. Mushrooms were so salty - they could be used as a preservative, hash brown that's suffered the (broken) heat lamp for too long - you know those films where they exhume a thousand year old body from their grave and there's that super dry puff of dust?.. I'm sure my hash brown did that. The 'cooked' tomato then... yep... that's seen less of the frying pan than the bacon. Practically still on the vine.
Look, this hotel is clean, it's reasonably priced and situated well (for me and darts events by all accounts), but that's where the fun stops. It's tired and outdated and worse still, lacks ANY redeemable atmosphere.
On the plus side, I did discover a great Indian restaurant close by as I knew I'd be disappointed with any offering the disinterested staff at the hotel were going to offer.
This could be so good with significant investment. Bob Potter created something that in its day would have been great, but I'd wager too little has been done since then. Look at practically ANY major hotel chain and work out where you're going wrong, because the hotel is WAY off the...

Absolutely amazing Upon arrival we met Sayed who straight away we could tell this is a man who is passionate about his job, we went up to our room which was spotless and very comfortable, I absolutely love the old feel and look about the place its got beautiful settings, on our second night we came back from a wedding and again Sayed was one duty along with Luke they both went above and beyond to make sure we had everything we needed and was comfortable I actually can't believe this is only a 3 star hotel from my experience and the service here especially from Sayed I would give it a 5 star hands down. Experience...
Read moreThere's a lot this hotel does right... and there's a few bits that let it down. Would I stay again? Yes, I think so.
So, things it got right:
Staff are pleasant
Lobby looks gorgeous. There is a seating area and a wonderful staircase.
The bar area is also rather elegant (in room notice advises that dress code for bar area is smart casual, no vests - something to keep in mind. However, you can order food to be sent up to your room)
The rooms have balconies - not sure if it's all rooms but mine did
View from my room (161) was over the lake, I don't think i could have asked for a room with a better view
someone in the room next to me was playing tv really loud, I could hear it from the lobby, but once in my room i could not hear it at all... so the walls do a great job of sound insulation. I could hear people talking in the lobby but that was rare.
room has great air conditioning.
room had an ironing board and basic iron that i was rather thankful for.
Things that can do with some consideration:
keys come attached to a big metal plate (that is also used to switch the room's power supply on) - this plate is big, very big. made turning the key with one hand a pain as had to keep flipping the plate over... the key needs 2 or 3 turns to lock /unlock
I had booked a room with a double bed... it was two singles pulled together and double sheets/covers pulled across them... sleeping in the middle was a bit uncomfortable, making the idea of a double bed as a single guest rather redundant. Please Please Please invest in some proper double mattresses.
Though the room's sound insulation seemed great, i could hear rain collecting and eventually heavily dripping on tiles above the room.
the bathroom could have been a little more spacious to tie in with the rest of the hotel
the shower head was in urgent need of renewal.
House keeping cleaned the room at some point during the day... they took/disposed of a small bar of hand soap, but didn't leave a replacement... I made do with the body wash.
room seemed to have been painted above waist level, but below waist level seemed to have been neglected
during COVID the bar had a restricted menu - If you're a vegetarian, you'll struggle with the mains. might have to stick to starters and dessert
in room notice says no outside food to be brought in. However, on speaking to staff I was given the impression that if outside food is bagged and you take it to your room discretely there's no issue. If you do decide to do that, perhaps leave a tip for the cleaners in your room.
Overall, other than the bed issue, I had a good dinner and a good nights sleep - I would love to stay again when the weather is better so I can enjoy the lake view a little more.
If you do order food from the bar, I highly recommend the cheesecake. It was...
