Overall we were fairly disappointed with our experience. My partner and I came out to Bisbee to get away but with the hope of being as safe as possible with the pandemic. Maybe it was foolish to expect much but we hoped that by going with a hotel over an Air BnB we could expect a higher standard of cleanliness. We arrived and the person who came to check us in made a point to put on a mask as she walked into the room but then wore it around her neck the entire time she showed us around. One staff member simply didn't have one. It felt as though the staff were hired more by social circle and less by any actual knowledge of the historic aspects of the hotel or management. The room was in poor repair, there were roof tiles in our bathroom. The "Victoria" room didn't actually give any victorian feel beyond being purple. There were two layers of curtain, neither of which closed enough to give any semblance of privacy with folks walking by our window. (This is huge, we couldn't have lights on while changing, it was deeply unpleasant). It was far past "charmingly worn" and at full on sad. Nothing was in disrepair, just not maintained in any real way. My non-expert opinion is that the hotel should be re-branded as a hostel. It has a kitchen and several lovely shared spaces great for groups and young folks. You can get away with multiple gimmicks as it's "quirky". Hostels create a different and more accurate expectation to guests. From our booking we expected the hotel to be quirky with themes. In reality it is trying to be a historic landmark, have a plurality of themes, a fun communal space and a haunted hotspot. It attempts too many things and does them all with mostly poor results. We had a lovely time though, it was quiet in town and we enjoyed the quiet. The hotel has an amazing view which we enjoyed from the wrap around balcony. We got our getaway -including rain. I wouldn't dissuade anyone from staying here, it's a good deal and if you like a haunted hotspot and lots of space to gather with friends or family, it makes sense. We won't be back with the same prices down the street, but we won't...
Read moreThe stench of the room was a mixture of vomit and body odor, a friend that we asked be a witness to the room described the smell as a dead animal (rat or mouse). I immediately started to gag upon entering the room. We have stayed in several hotels in Bisbee and can handle a musty smell, but this was beyond putrid. Went downstairs and waited for the incoming guests to leave the office so we could have a private discussion with the lady at the front desk (who was very friendly) and told her how rank the room smelled; asked if she would go up to the room with us so she could verify but she informed us she had no sense of smell so she couldn't verify. We explained there was no way we could sleep in that room and that we wanted to be refunded the $143 charged for the room. She told us she did not have the authority to make that decision, so she called her manager via cell phone. The manager told us that she couldn't refund us for the room, we should understand that the hotel was over 130 yrs old and has a musty smell. Our friend asked why they don't the musty smell on their website if they feel it's no big deal. We explained the odor was beyond musty, she again said that she couldn't refund us, and offered to place an ionizer machine in the room for an hour to sanitize the room. She also said that they hand clean the bathroom floors (no mop), and that a guest spent the night before in the same room and didn't complain. At no time did the manager show any sign of empathy or even offer to come to the hotel and see/smell for herself for a resolution. Our friend pointed out the Better Business Bureau accreditation plaque on the wall in the office and told the lady at the front desk that the hotel wouldn't want to lose the membership. I'll be filing a complaint with BBB next. We left the hotel without being reimbursed and will NEVER return to the Inn at Castle Rock. You'd be better off camping next to a landfill/garbage dump, during monsoon season, then to stay there. At least the foul stench...
Read moreCharming and kitschy decore and fun historic building with lots of local lore surrounding it. I had stayed here as a child and had great memories, but one thing here just made the stay so unenjoyable that I probably wouldn't stay here again: the noise levels. My husband and I stayed here two nights and on the first night at 3:00am a guest rang the downstairs doorbell about seven times and it was so loud in our upstairs room that it woke us. Really unpleasant and when we talked to the front desk attendant the next day she said that the doorbell was loud because it connects to the floor above our floor since that is where the owner has his rooms. There was a guest that got in late, the attendant told us, and that we shouldn't hear the doorbell again the next night. So, the second night someone did ring the doorbell again, this time around 6:30am. After that a couple other guests sat directly outside the window to our room (right near where the headboard of our bed was) and talked extremely loudly and kept us awake until my husband politely asked them to be quiet. I don't think they even knew they'd been disturbing anyone because there's an inviting porch swing there outside the window that anyone can access--terrible location if you wanted to protect guests' privacy and ensure a quiet stay. Lastly, the building is just old and the walls are thin; you can hear every creak, groan, and voice of everything and everyone. I wanted to love this place, but next time I'm in Bisbee I will stay...
