Oak Street Inn – Lodging||||My wife woke me up on Friday just before I would head to my home office for my workday to begin, and she said; “pack for 6 days, I’m taking you on a trip!” nice surprise. So I had the option; circle tour of Lake Superior, up through Canada and around (1300 miles or so) or a more leisurely South Shore Tour through the US; Wisconsin and Michigan, just hug the lake. I choose the latter so we could take our time. ||||We had some difficulty finding lodging, it is the weekend and the season is coming to a close along the South Shore of Lake Superior so people are wanting to get one last trip in apparently; and many colleges are starting their freshman orientation which has parents bringing the new students in and grabbing what lodging is available. ||||Almost ready to give up this area due to lack of lodging last night and we go down a little side street in desperation, we see a VERY old building that was being restored in a very tasteful manner. We saw the sign; “Oak Street Inn Lodging”. It looked a little deserted but there was a number on the front door and we took a chance! The owner answered and we inquired… we heard him ask his wife if they could take in another visitor, she graciously said yes, give me 20 minutes to prepare the room. ||||Well it wasn’t a room, it was a whole apartment! We have 3 bedrooms, each different, clean and comfortable; and a vintage bathroom with the old claw foot tub! We have a full kitchen, dining area, living room and family room… it is just wonderful! Downstairs (no elevator, old steep stairway, well worth the climb) is a wonderful common area with a mini-museum documenting the buildings rich history (1890?), there are some artifacts in the common area that are wonderful, the owners Jim and Stacey Flood personally greeted us and showed us around. I can see the pride in their faces as they explain this wonderful property! They have several different examples of old linoleum in the common area, very thick and colorful (they don’t make this stuff anymore!), I am certain I recognize one of the patterns from somewhere deep in my past.||||Jim also built an awesome hot tub just off the common area, I’m sad that we didn’t take the time to really enjoy it. ||||Jim and Stacey, thank you for being great hosts, and thank you for your passion for history and working so hard (over 20 years) to restore this jewel and keep it on the market for others to enjoy.||||Enjoy my wife’s pictures of this...
Read moreWe stayed at the Oak Street Inn during the annual CopperDog 150 dog sled race. The Inn was the perfect place to stay. With three big bedrooms (2 queens in 2 rooms and 1 queen in the third room) and two bathrooms, there was plenty of room for the family plus a couple of friends). The living area, kitchen and dining area gave us ample space to gather, chat, and enjoy meals together. Downstairs is a community space with hot tub, pool table, TV and tables. We actually hosted a small reception for other friends who were attending the races in the common area, which was great. Jim and Stacey (the proprietors) joined us at the reception. They are very friendly and gracious hosts! Our daughter competed in the dog sled race and there was plenty of room in the ample parking lots for the dog truck. Knowing about the Oak Street Inn makes me want to attend the CopperDog races every year. It's an exciting event with many concurrent activities to keep spectators busy and happy while the mushers are on the trail . I highly recommend the Oak Street Inn and a winter vacation to the...
Read moreMy wife and I have been planning a trip with friends up to Copper Country for the past 5 years. ||We found this place 4 years ago and return every winter. The owner works hard every year to make improvements to the building. This year it looked like he added a pool table, flat screen tv, and stereo to the general area as well as internet access and other improvements to the rooms. We have had groups of 8-12 come every year and always have plenty of room. While not in our room, we enjoy the spacious general room downstairs by either being in the large hot tub or out in the common area playing games. We utilize the kitchenin our room quite a bit to make meals for the group and it has everything you need. Each of the 2 rooms upstairs has 5 queen size beds, 2 full bathrooms, a kitchen, eating area and living room. The Oak Street Inn has an old fashion feel to it while still providing enough comfort for a very enjoyable stay. If you want a true feel of historical Calumet or the surrounding area I would...
