Calumet is a good home base for exploring the Keewenaw area. They did not require a deposit surprisingly. The building is over 100 years old and is still quite authentic. Much is original. We stayed in the Anglers Suite which included a full kitchen, bathroom, bedroom, dining area and living room-it is like an apartment. It is budget friendly at $85 per night. There are 2 flights of stairs to get to the lodging. You could cook a meal here if you wanted. Nice to have lots of room when traveling with our dog. And no extra charges to do so! Nothing fancy, a bit of an eclectic mix of furnishings. The bed was extremely firm. The TV was quite old, but for us that was not important. The owners are committed to preserving the history of Calumet, which I believe would be quite financially challenging in such a remote area. There is not a lot of lodging in the Keewenaw Penninsula and nothing that is fancy. This worked well for us as I wanted to stay in a...
Read moreThis has been one of my favorite places to stop for lunch or dinner, but my last visit was very disappointing. The appetizers, soups, and desserts are always good, and I have loved that they offer a vegetarian version of their burgers. The Gipp Burger was my favorite. On my last visit, the burger was so overcooked it was inedible. There were literally burned spots on the burger, and you could snap it in half it was so dry. Veggie burgers do not cook like a meat burger. Cooks need to understand this. There was hardly any sauce on it, and there were maybe four or five small bits of the fried onion tangles on top. No lettuce or anything else at all on the burger. So, essentially, a blackened patty on a bun. Not the zesty, spicy, saucy handful that I remember. I would have sent it back, but the server did not return to check on the meal. So...
Read moreThey only had one working waiter so service was VERY slow and for some reason the cook got confused over when to serve our appetizers. I had the Gipper Burger and my husband had the Olive Burger which were both good. The homemade chips were a little over done but good and the signature spinach Artichoke dip was DELICIOUS. No condiments at all are on the table so you have to ask for them. No drinks or beer list could be found (they are a microbrewery) so we though that was strange. The food took forever and there were only 3 other customers. I had the Ukranian pale ale (because they were out of their own pale ale) and it was wonderful. My husband had the Keenaw Cowboy IPA which he said was not as bitter and hopsy and regular IPA and...
