Cape May was definitely where me and my husband wanted to get married. There are so many beautiful places there! When we first started looking around for a venue, of course the southern mansion was on our list. It was actually our first stop! Looking online at pictures, we just loved the overall look of this bed and breakfast! It took you back to the 1800s! So beautiful! So of course we had to go see in person. We got there and was greeted by Ken and he told us all about it and gave us a tour right then and there! Oh my goshhhh! We instantly fell in love. So after getting some information about our wedding being done there, we left and started driving to our next potential venue. Honestly, we got to the next venue, didn’t even get out of our car, and said to each other “let’s go back to the mansion”. So that’s what we did! Haha!! Literally drove back to the mansion and said “yup, this is it.” The first and only venue we looked at! So then we stayed a little longer to book our wedding and that was it! From there on out, Ken was our go-to guy (our wedding coordinator)!! What a fun and incredible man! Even though COVID, he was always very responsive to my emails and calls. I’m very OCD and very organized so I probably made him nuts from time to time (haha) but he always had a great sense of humor and helped me with everything! Even until this day we keep in touch! He’s a forever friend! So fast forward to wedding weekend! Yes I said weekend! We booked the whole weekend with family and friends and everyone was just in awe with the mansion. So incredibly beautiful and very relaxing! Everyone just loved their rooms and all the common rooms to hang out in. Breakfast each morning was incredible! We had a long list of food to choose from and when it was your scheduled time to eat, (had to choose your time due to COVID), your food was nice and hot and brought to your table! Wedding day- ahhh! What a perfect day!!!! We were the first wedding that happened since Covid. Everything was absolutely perfect! What I loved, I mean really loved about the mansion, is that each part of your wedding is in a different area. It makes it so different and so unique! We had the ceremony and cocktail hour outside, dinner in the solarium, and reception in the ballroom. I absolutely loved that you are not stuck in one place the whole time and it also showed our guests every area of the mansion (especially to the guests who didn’t stay the weekend). You saw all the beautiful history of the mansion. Oh and the food on wedding day was absolutely amazing! Of course my husband and I already knew that because of our taste testing, but we so glad our guests felt the same way! One thing I wish the mansion had offered or had options for would be for the centerpieces. Especially having three different areas couples have to decorate. I know every wedding is unique in their own way and want a certain look, but maybe having on site options if the couples wanted to choose that. It would’ve definitely helped with one less thing to worry about lol. But other then that, we couldn’t have chose a better place! Whether it’s having an event there, or just going for the weekend or the night, I highly recommend The Southern Mansion. It’s walking distance to the beach and also walking distance to Washington Street. Couldn’t have been a more perfect spot for the mansion to be! Thank you Ken and staff for everything! Couldn’t have asked for a better place and staff for our...
Read moreIt was in the 90's and very humid during my stay when I arrived and the air was not working. They had a portable floor unit. The girl who brought me to the room told me they have had problems on the third floor. I was room #10 third floor. The maintence guy could not fix internal unit. The portable floor unit read E4. He couldn't get it to work finally emptied the water out of it. It started to work, but the the temp reset to 75 and the top floor was very hot. They attempted to fix 3 more times. But it would do the same. I awoke twice that night to fix it. Even downloaded the manual because the buttons were so worn you didn't know what you were pushing. Finally at 3 Am it started to work. Woke at 6 am sweating. Cold shower. Told them. Breakfast. Walk. Came back. Not fixed. Told them my best friend was arriving. Needed the room serviced. I notified them at 9:00 am. At 11:30 room not serviced. We gave them several more attempts. Even saw them putting a new portable unit it another room on the 3rd floor. They said they had to go out and buy it. So why not go back? Get one for my room????The hallway was cold and room hot. We went to dinner at Willow Creek Winery. Food great and wine. However the hotel told us it was a short walk about a mile and a half from the hotel. We walked it. It was more than a mile and a half. A 20 minute walk turned into an 1hour and 20 minutes in our dresses and flip flops. On main roads and back farm roads.
We return after dinner, taking a cab back and the room was hot and they put a fan in the room. We packed up and asked for a refund. We paid cash. They said all they could do was refund a credit to a credit card instead of refunding the cash or we would have to wait until morning when the manager arrived. I said no. We are not staying in a sweltering hot room with no air and a fan. After a couple hours of insisting the manager finally drove from Cape May Court House ,she handed us back our money back. We left at 11:00 pm. More complaints: asked if there was coffee close by. The manager behind the desk and the girl tell us of Wawa and a coffee shop by the beach. We asked for something closer. They said sorry. We turn around and there is free coffee in the reception area of the front desk. Then the front desk manager says, oh look at that. There's coffee right there. I've been going there for years. The place is looking run down. Not kept up, obviously. The staff seemed miserable from the waitress at breakfast to the entire staff except housekeeping, who actually smiled. The mold growing on the front porch -ceiling, dirty bathroom on first floor. There was a wedding. There were drinks, wedding material and pre wedding stuff all over the sitting area and tables. No one was cleaning up after the guests. The coffee that was spilled on the linen table cloth at breakfast, was still there for the guests at the wedding and when we left at 11:00 pm. Look for posted pictures. Very upset. The room looked great until you looked around. No air conditioning. They put a fan in the room? 3rd floor. I sweated more in the room than I did out just...
Read moreHave been staying at the mansion for over a decade and this last trip left my wife and I pleased, as usual. It's always quite and spotless with friendly, accommodating staff.
Was surprised by a review I saw down below by "Autumn Dreams" as they stayed there the same time as us; it's crazy how different people can perceive the exact same things.
We recall the days when the breakfast buffet was the norm. While it was great to have unlimited breakfast, it's not true that it was quicker as sometimes you had to wait for a table to open up or they ran out of someone you wanted to eat. The way they've been doing breakfast the past 3 years or so is so much better! You choose a time slot for your breakfast- this ensures the dining room is never crowded and you don't have to wait for a table. You complete your menu the day before choosing "appetizers" of yogurt, fresh, v seasonal fruit and freshly baked pastry plate....or all 3. Then you choose an entree: eggs any style, omelet, French toast, hotcakes, plus your sides like sausage, bacon and homefries. The servers seat you then being your apps and not even 10 mins later your food comes up, hot and fresh. Drinks are buffet-style with all kinds of hot teas, coffees and fresh juices. They offer vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free options as well, along with accommodating any other dietary requests guests have.
Considering every other bed and breakfast we've stayed at over the past 2 decades have no choice for breakfast but rather everyone got the exact same thing- these custom breakfast are amazing. To call them "diner food" is absolutely absurd! Who else serves a two-course breakfast!?
Buffets are way out of style! People want to reduce their personal waste and consumption. The mansion is just following suit with what the general public wants and being conscientious about the matter while saving themselves money by not wasting product and time. It's a wise business move.
The servers are amazing as well! They are extremely knowledgeable about the town and the mansion itself and super accommodating. There's a mother and her son that serve there and we'd literally go back there just for them. Not sure who Autumn was talking about but the servers are always dressed professionally in all black clothing, black aprons, etc; perhaps they mistook another fellow guest for staff.
Someone else mentioned the beach is 8 blocks away from the mansion but it's only 3. Walk to the mall, turn left and go 2 blocks to the beach. Not sure where they were walking to lol. But then again it's cape may and once you park at the mansion you won't need to move your car again.
As always another excellent trip to Southern Mansion and Cape May. Can't wait to go back near...
