I am currently here at this Bed & Breakfast right now for Easter on April 20, 2025. I came down for two nights, last night and tonight and staying in the Ebony room. While I will say this is one of the prettiest ones I have stayed in (and I have stayed at 8 different Bed & Breakfast here in the heart of Cape May) this is the most disappointing one. First off I have not had hot water in my room at all for two days! I tried to take a shower yesterday and it was freezing cold. I figured maybe everyone was using water when they got here for Easter weekend. Sink tried again this morning and still ice cold! We told the manager and she apologized and said she would check to make sure the breaker didn’t trip. I came back from dinner at 8:30 to try and take a shower and still ice cold! Absolutely terrible I can’t even take a shower when I’m away for two days. I also booked the room I did bc I wanted a soaking tub. And I have not been able to use that either since there was no hot water.
While these little things may seem minor, all of the other Bed & Breakfasts offer some or most of these. When we were here staying at the Harrison Bed & Breakfast 6 months ago in October, we walked in here to see if they had availability for Easter weekend bc we thought it was beautiful and it was one we wanted to try. They had availability so we booked it. What we loved was the modern, art deco style and the lounge room to hang out in at night when we come back from dinner. Well when we arrived this weekend, they did away with the lounge room and out up more tables for their restaurant. The whole point of a Bed & Breakfast is to have a common area and a homey feel, but they did away with that. They only have a mirror in the bathroom, so when your partner/spouse is in the bathroom, you have no where to do makeup or get ready. They only provide the basic shampoo, conditioner and body wash. Nothing else! Every other place has always had lotion, maybe Qtips, makeup wipes, hair cap, robes. They only provide the bare minimum. They don’t even put water in your room which every place ALWAYS does. When I asked the kitchen staff if they had bottle of water we could take up tomorrow room, they were very rude!!! They were like um I’m not sure. This place also allows pets. I am an animal lover but a Bed & Breakfast is not a place for dogs, especially when they are barking for 15 minutes Easter morning at 7:45am! This is a vacation and get away for some people and we don’t want to hear dogs. The porch also still has Christmas topiaries at the entrance to the place. Christmas is long gone and there is not one other place that still has Christmas decorations up. The porch is covered in dead leaves and the cushions of the chairs are dirty, so you have to clean them before you sit. The creamers in my room all curdled when I used them in my coffee. I had 4 and all 4 curdled.
Like I said these last things are little things that I could normally look past, but the fact that I have not had hot water to take a shower in for two days is unacceptable and makes all the little things seem worse. I would def consider another Bed & Breakfast before ever...
Read moreMy husband I stayed at the Hugh for 2 nights while attending a family memorial service. When we returned to our room after a long hot day and to get ready for the service, we were quite surprised that our room had not been tidied and our towels were still damp from the night before. I called the owner and was told that they don’t freshen rooms unless asked due to covid, but we we’re not informed of this at check in. We went around and around on the phone and finally I said ok, thank you and hung up. Now with my husband in the shower I hear a knock on the door, it’s the husband. He is empty handed, not even fresh towels. (Even though Sandy claims on the Airbnb review, that he was coming to tidy up) He says, is there a problem? I tell him the situation and he goes on with the covid excuse, even though he is standing very close with no mask! He is now questioning me about where I have stayed during covid, with no intention of smoothing out the misunderstanding. He continued to berate me and left (although Sandy says I slammed the door in his face, which would be ridiculous on my part since he was supposedly there to tidy up!) We have stayed in many Bed and breakfasts and Airbnb’s here and overseas and have never been treated like this. I wrote a review on Airbnb and Sandy responded that I was rude and that her reviews say it all. In my book, whether she perceived my frustration as rudeness is irrelevant. A good innkeeper should be able to smooth a situation like this over and have the guest leave satisfied. I have seen on another platform that Sandy keeps bringing up her great reviews. I also have excellent reviews on Airbnb. The difference is the amount of money we paid to stay there! I was their guest, I wasn’t unruly, loud, drunken nor destructive. I simply asked for a service that is usually provided. And when there is a misunderstanding, it should be corrected even if the guest is frustrated. Sandy has some great reviews, but look further and you will find...
Read moreWe did our research for accommodations in Cape May. It wasn’t until we came upon The Hugh that the decision was clear on the best place to spend our honeymoon. My husband and I loved the decor.. it’s what initially drew us in. The house has old bones but a fresh, vibrant update that was an awesome contrast to the other B&Bs that were charming but had a very old fuddy-duddy feel. We stayed in the Burgundy room. Our bed was comfy and huge! The lighting in the bathroom was awesome for doing makeup! The shower was a bit tiny but I guess that’s the situation with old Victorian homes. We had lots of hot water though and plenty of fresh towels! Each breakfast (made by Sandy herself!) was unique, creative, delicious and kept us full all morning. We loved that there were two choices: one sweet, one savory... we’d get both and share! With the pep of the Energizer Bunny, John attentively served up the breakfast and coffee and shared anecdotes about things to do in the area. The snack room was a huge bonus! Homemade baked goods, cute candy jars, little bags of veggie straws, tea and coffee were all available to guests throughout the day. They also had a water cooler and fridge (we stored our wine in it since many of the restaurants in Cape May are BYOB!) Our favorite part of our stay was the porch! It’s massive and wraps around one side of the house. After strolling the beach, we’d come back and sit there for a while, snacking and drinking wine. It was relaxing, comfortable and so big that we always had privacy. Overall, The Hugh was a place that exceeded all of our vacation expectations while feeling posh and quaint all at...
