We stayed at The Dexter with family as there are VERY limited options to stay in Elk Rapids. We had two hotel rooms. We were not quite expecting that there is really no one manning this hotel. Upon receiving our room numbers and room code, we checked into the hotel. The code worked for one of our rooms but not the other. We went through our reservation to see if we made a mistake. We saw there was a different code. Tried that and that code didn't work. We texted back to the number that sent us the code only to get instructions how to enter the code. We found a phone number to call. We did get lucky and there was one staff member on premises the time. She went to get batteries for the lock. That still didn't work. She went to grab her laptop and went through the reservations of everyone there. She found ours and told us we were given the wrong room number and code. We were lucky someone was there in person otherwise we would have never figured out the room issue. ||Upon checking into our room, we noticed black shoe prints on the bathroom floor and a black footprint on the bath mat. Made you question how clean this hotel really is. Also, our bathroom door would't close as the door isn't level. It took a bit of maneuvering to finally close it.|| The second night into our stay, we had an issue with the toilet and needed a plunger. Again, had to text the number we were given. They told us there is cupboard behind the front desk that has that and other amenities that might be needed. We searched this cupboard three times, there was no plunger. We texted the number again and were told "thank you for bringing this to our attention. We're looking into this and will ensure the necessary items are supplied to your unit promptly. Our team may need to enter your unit to address this. We appreciate your patience." 15 minutes later, I received another text that said "As of this time, we do not have a team member onsite to deliver a plunger. We will be able to hear back from our team by tomorrow about its availability." How is someone supposed to not use the toilet in their hotel room and there is no way to get help immediately!? Unfortunately, this hotel is in a very small town where everything closes around 6 pm (about the time all this was happening). There was no store close by to go buy a plunger. I sent another text back stating that this was unacceptable and advising this was the second issue we had with this hotel and advised that we drove to a a local gas station and asked to borrow a plunger out of their bathroom! Their response was "I understand your frustration and appreciate you taking steps to resolve the issue quickly. Your feedback is crucial in helping us improve our guest experience. We're review our in-unit essentials to ensure future guests have all they need. I'm here to help with any further assistance or information you may require during your stay." Not the response you want to receive when you don't have a working toilet in your hotel room where there should have been someone to help. That is what we pay for in the cost of the hotel room!||The only reason I am giving this place 2 "Stars" is because the woman who did help us with the check in problem was very helpful and friendly AND the bartender was awesome. Otherwise, if you are looking to stay at a hotel that lacks in staff and no help whatsoever if there is an issue, this is the...
Read moreI’m staying at the Dexter August 12-15,2025 with my husband and my dog. On Wednesday the 13th we lose power at 9:18 am to our room and there’s no one to speak to because everything is through email and text, which does NOT work. When we got back from Pickelball and breakfast around 11:45 the young lady Lisa working the desk was happy to go reset the breaker and it corrected the problem. Later Wednesday evening I received a text saying that a contractor need to get in my room between 12:30 and 5:00 for ongoing issues with there electrical and it would take 30-45 minutes and we would be at the top of the list since our unit was occupied. Why would you rent a place with ongoing issues?
At 12:45 the electrician came in looked around left, came back half hour later and said we will be back. Now it’s 2.5 hours later and no one has been back. I wasn’t leaving my dog that I paid to be in the room and my personal belongings with a contractor that doesn’t work for Dexter with no hotel staff on the premises. This is less than acceptable if it’s an ongoing problem why wasn’t it handled when there were no guest, don’t book it until it’s fixed. They have ruined our vacation we will never come back here. If you’re not computer literate or do not text you will have no way to talk to anyone from the Dexter except the young lady that works until 6 pm and she has no say about anything and can’t call anyone with a problem only via texting or emailing her boss.
HORRIBLE experience do not stay at the Dexter in Elk Rapids a lot of other nice places to stay.
Lisa was the best part of the stay. ...
Read more2 night stay at the Dexter during fall color season in northern Michigan. The room was lovely. Clean, comfortable and very nice toiletries. It had all the amenities to make our stay pleasant. The virtual hotel aspect, with no on-site help, is a swing and a miss. Viery sterile and offputting. We received our check-in access code codes via text as expected, and thankfully had no issues getting into the hotel or our room. However, the rest of the facilities - bar. front desk are very sterile and unmanned. It was a beautiful weekend and we would have loved to have a cocktail or hang out at the bar, but no one there to serve. Watched other guests experiencing the same thing with puzzled looks. Would have loved to sit down in the common area in the morning and have a couple of coffee, but no coffee available other than in the room. Recommendations to the Dexter/Kasa management- on-site staffing would be a huge perk. This is a premium location in northern Michigan. For the price being charged we can’t be the only guests expecting a little more personal experience. On a final note – our room also had no chairs or additional seating other than the beds. While pictures online showed a chair in the room none was available. A little awkward. Microwave was out of order, with a note to use the microwave in the lobby. Not an issue for us, but a note to hotel staff for repairs/upkeep. Also an additional trashcan in the main room, not just the bathroom,...
