We stayed in Estes at the Castle Mountain Lodge in the Greatroom.
Pros: Massive open space with lots of room, large King size bed, personal hot tub only for use by greatroom guests, grill on deck next to personal hot tub for use by greatroom guests only. There is a massive wood burning fireplace (CML gives you 1 package of wood per day you stay with them. Extra bundles are 2 bucks so really cheap!). Sink, Stove, Fridge, possibly an oven too but I can't remember. All in all a great place for a couple to get away from the world.
Cons: The comforter was a hotel comforter not a warm cozy comforter. There is no dishwasher and you have to pay an extra fee of 15% if the dishes are not washed. There is no telephone in the room. And you only get cell service from AT&T. So if you don't have an AT&T cell phone you have to go to the laundry room 3 minutes away just to order pizza or any other food. We bought a go phone from the local Radio Shack for $39 bucks and that came with minutes to use. The hot tub can be seen from the road, from the neighbors window, from the Shuffleboard area, and from the parking lot. So the Private hot tub is not really private however it is only for the use of the greatroom guests so it is personal. The WiFi was not good enough to support a google voice call from my phone, since I did not have a room phone I wanted to at least use the internet to make a phone call, however, the internet was so bad that I could only hear small snippets of the other person on the line.
Because of the rules about washing your own dishes my wife and I felt like the dishes could be very unsanitary. What if the previous couple had decided to just rinse off the dishes or what if they felt like just wiping them off with a paper towel? Seems kinda unsanitary.
Finally the brightest star of this lodge is the customer service! My wife and I love to grill so we went and bought some fillet of beef. We got back to the greatroom and started the grill 15 minutes later the grill was cold but the fire was on...we went down to the front desk and asked for someone to come look. The maintenance guy said that the grill was broken and I would have to use the one on the other side of the property....so I trudged over to the other grill and cooked up our meat and veggies. I asked for the front desk to talk to the manager and find out what they were going to do about this situation. After I was done grilling I went in to talk to the manager and she told me that we were getting a full refund for that nights stay! I was blown away, I was kinda expecting to get 20% off or something comparable to that not 100% off. Because of this I am giving them a 4 instead of a 1...
Read moreWe stayed for 2 nights in late August after reading so many positive reviews. Fortunately the reviews were quite accurate! We stayed in Castle Room #4, in the building next to the office. Our parking spot was conveniently located outside the door up a set of stairs. (Not sure how accessible this particular building is, though other buildings did appear to be accessible without steps.) The room is a typical motel-style room - 2 queen beds, a table and couple of chairs, bathroom at the rear, and TV/microwave. ||The room was clean, just a bit dated. There were toiletries and a hair dryer available. We loved the screen door and windows that open. There’s no AC, but even in August we were comfortable with just the windows open. Our little front porch area had 2 chairs so we could sit outside. (!t would’ve been nice to have a small table there too so we could set a glass or plate down.)||The lodge is located on Falls River Rd about 3 miles from the entrance to RMNP alongside a flowing river. We did hear some road noise at night, but it wasn’t a deal-breaker for us. We enjoyed walking to dinner at Wapiti Pub along the riverside path. Although we didn’t use the fire pit, it was an inviting area near the river with chairs and benches to sit and enjoy. On our walk to dinner, we saw a huge elk grazing across the road from the lodge entrance. ||The check-in and checkout process was super easy and the quaint office has a big library of books for guests to borrow. All in all, I highly recommend Castle Mountain Lodge for a relaxing stay alongside a pretty river and easy...
Read moreThis weeklong stay at Castle Mountain Lodge was amazing. We stayed in the Great Room from 9-20 to 9-27-24 and it was wonderful. The weather prediction was supposed to be pretty bad, but besides one rainy night and morning, it was perfect.
What we LOVED: The hot tub, the mountain context, the walkable river, proximity to Wapiti's restaurant, the privacy of the room itself. Also, kitchen was great, supply of games and puzzles was fun, and we had nightly fires in the fireplace as they supplied two bundles of wood daily. We also extended our stay to 7 nights and saved a ton. It was also very close to Estes Park proper, as well as one of the RMNP entrances.
What was OK: The internet was spotty about 10-15% of the time, and the posted photos of the hot tub looked like it was completely private, which it was only about 80% with visibility from the structure next door, and part of the parking lot. This was modifiable with the picnic table umbrella and hammock. Also, the deck was open to anyone who wanted to walk up the stairs, which a toddler did our first day. All that to say, it was private enough for us to visit again, just check your expectations based on the photos as they were strategically taken.
Joel, Wanda and the staff were very cool, provided everything we needed and the housekeeping staff checked in on us as needed. We had everything we could ever want and LOVED our stay.
I highly recommend this place, and hope to...
