Arriving in Flagstaff after a few days in Sedona, we really did not have much of an agenda other than to get to the Grand Canyon (this was sort of the plan for this trip - relaxed and not over-scheduled). Upon arrival, we were greeted warmly by Maxx and given our tour of the home. Right away, we felt welcome and comfortable. Maxx helped us out with suggestions on things to do in the area, where to eat and even our best route for our brief GC trip. Though we did not meet Monica until the next morning at breakfast, she also immediately made us feel right at home. She seemed genuinely concerned that we enjoyed our breakfasts, which were amazing! Breakfast is at 0830 and they will bring coffee with pastries to your room earlier, if desired. The house itself is beautiful, though a little deceiving. It appears much older than it really is and, we learned, it was built with that intention. It is well appointed with many antiques making it a bit of a museum in itself. The rooms are so comfortable right down to the mattresses and pillows! Our room, the firefly had both a stand up shower and soaking tub. This room boasts a dramatic king sized poster bed and fireplace, which we did not choose to use but we were provided a log and lighter if we desired. Just as information, there is no TV in the room, which was not a problem for us, and there are dogs on property which are friendly and loveable. There is a little bit of road noise from the front rooms, which did not disturb us, but, again, just FYI. The owners to supply a white noise machine to help though we did not choose to utilize this. My wife and I enjoyed our stay and would highly recommend this B&B for couples travelling in the Flagstaff area. Thank you Maxx and Monica! for a...
Read moreComing from New England we have a high standard of expectations in our accommodations. Pulling into Starlight Pines we immediately felt at home. The innkeepers, Maxx and Monica are old friends we hadn’t yet met. The building is impeccably clean, far exceeding COVID protocols, I suspect this is their everyday standard. We were fortunate to stay in the dragonfly room, home to a generous clawfoot soaking tub, fireplace and king sized bed. The ceilings are high, the linens are cozy, but most of all it was the best inn we’ve had the pleasure of staying in, after dozens across the country and Canada.
Maxx and Monica are well versed in local culture, can give tips and suggestions for things to do, what to try, and where to be for even an ISS fly over. But the real win was the sweet duo who clearly run the show, Lucy and Lily, the Inn pups!
Breakfast, my goodness, where to start. Daily there was scratch prepared hot meals featuring eggs, fruit, local bacon and incredible pastries and breads. We left too full everyday and convinced Maxx to scale back for us as we don’t typically eat full breakfast! Coffee over flowing, and in room k-cup and tea kettle with huge selections of coffee tea, hot chocolate. We were offered access to seltzers and bottled water throughout our trip as well. After hours of exploring national parks there was always fresh treats waiting for us to come home to. Maxx I’m going to get that brownie recipe out of you my friend! Truly the best brownies, amazing cookies and always fresh fruit available. But coming into the inn and being greeted with comfy slippers, Lily and Lucy, and your smiling (I could see it behind the masks!) faces made the trip from New England worth it. We’re coming back and...
Read moreMaxx and Monica made our stay warm and magical in almost too many ways to recount! First, there was the charming Victorian itself, located within trees with a beautiful view of a mountain from the back porch and from one of the rooms. No matter which room you choose, you can’t go wrong. We stayed in the Dragonfly with its quaint wood-burning fireplace, however Maxx gave us a tour of all the rooms. Each is original and first rate. The decor is handpicked, with a folksy, hand-curated and tasteful air, with something charming around every corner. Breakfast was superb, with offerings like Orange Grand Marnier French Toast, scrambled eggs with chives & onion cheese, and thick cut Farmers hickory bacon. When we couldn’t even finish the buttered danishes that preceded all that, Maxx asked us if tomorrow we might like something different. All the attention to detail and comfort, combined with Maxx and Monica’s friendly demeanor, in a lovely setting, made for a fantastic weekend. Maxx and Monica also were so helpful in suggesting outdoor activities and sightseeing. These were appropriate to our skill level, as Maxx is an expert outdoorsman and former Scout Leader of the Year. I will add that, as visitors during these trying Covid times, we were thrilled to see appropriate safety measures being taken. In summary, Maxx and Monica’s careful and sincere attention to safety, hospitality, decor and cuisine, made for a magical stay. Our only complaint is that we can give the Starlight Pines B&B only five stars… rather than six… or ten! We give the Starlight Pines as many stars as you can see in the beautiful...
