Let me start by saying I had a very long day of travel yesterday. I was in 4 different airports. It was a 20-hour day. That being said. During one of my layovers, I tried to find a reasonably priced motel in Gulfport, MS for one night. I asked the owner when I checked in at 2 am if I could have a late check out into the afternoon if I were willing to pay an extra fee. He said it shouldn't be a problem to stay until 2 pm or 3 pm for $30 or $40. Keep in mind the room rate is $89.99. I got the key. It was apparent there are people staying here for "extended" periods of time. When I got in the room, I was greeted by the wonderfully working air conditioner. The room appeared ok. I was hopeful. Then I made the mistake of turning the bed down. I was greeted by hair throughout. Let's just say I could tell what ethnicity the night before. Coils and coils of hair. I pulled the comforter down further and there was sand and residue at the foot of the bed. The sheets had not been changed. I went to go to the bathroom. There is mildew growing in several places in the tub. The bathmat was blackened on the edges. And the floor mat towel was dirty. The bathroom doorknob was hanging on the door. The doors throughout were painted but curling at the bottoms more than my hair in the Mississippi humidity. Just when I thought hair was contained to the king-size bed, I was greeted with long straight hair on the bathtub's edge. The pillows on the bed were clean and smelled fresh. I took those 4 pillows and sat in the cool room until morning. As I was sitting there, I began sneezing and coughing. I even got sick. I soon realized that the cold A/C was pumping out mold spores into the air. I did not ask for another room. It was 3 am. I was all in. I sat in the chair and waited it out. The reason I didn't ask for another room. Frankly, I looked around the complex and the entire area looked the same. Could the next room be even worse? I did not want to find out. I am saddened by this review as I always advocate for owners of small businesses rather than corporate giants. This is a lovely couple who owns this place. They work the front desk themselves. I told them about all of what I found. I am not hopeful however even though they were nice. I felt as if they could see 1/100th of what I saw if they inspected a couple of rooms per day for quality control. They offered no refund. No discount. They did say they were sorry. When I left to get a coffee at the Krispy Kreme next door, it appeared to be their vehicles parked out front. They were both BMWs. Cheap motels must still make money in the US. I would not stay at this motel again if I was given a free room. All the...
Read moreI stayed at this EconoLodge on October 10 and 11, 2015. It was clean and well maintained. Most of the rooms are about 200 feet away from the road, so traffic sounds are not a problem. Although this motel is located near the airport, the sound insulation seems to work very well. I was not bothered by airplane noises. My room was very spacious, with a king-sized bed, an easy chair, a chest for suitcases, a chest of drawers on which the TV was placed, and a desk. Lighting was sufficient for reading. There was a unit sporting two USB plug inlets and two AC plug holes next to the bed. The shower head had great water pressure. I reported a problem with my refrigerator on Sunday evening, and returned from an errand about 90 minutes later to find that I now had another (functioning) refrigerator. My refrigerated food had been carefully moved from the old into the new unit. The air conditioner/heater was quiet and functioned well. If desired, an extra quilt/bedspread was readily available in the low chest on which you place your suitcase. Breakfast, consisting of fresh fruit, juices, waffles, a variety of breads (including raisin bread with lots of raisins) and sweet rolls, apple and orange juices, milk, dry cereals, oatmeal packets, yogurt, and more was well presented. The area was kept clean of food debris. The cleaning ladies were both full of smiles and graciousness. The owner obviously cares about this motel and wants his guests to be happy. Should you need to pick up any forgotten items, a shopping center, including a Super Wal*Mart, hair and nail care, ladies clothing (Cato carries regular and plus sizes),restaurants, and other stores is across the street. There are several other restaurants, ranging from fast food, to regular sit-down-and-be-waited-on restaurants within easy walking distance (although you do have to cross Hwy 49 to get to some of them). A Krispy Kreme store is on the other side of the motel's driveway. The EconoLodge location just off of Hwy 10, and only about 3 or 4 miles from the beach, makes it a convenient and economical headquarters for visitors to the Gulfport/west Biloxi area. Do try it when you are looking for an economical place to stay in this area! The star rating is comparing this EconoLodge with other motels/hotels in this...
Read moreWhen we checked in this place looked fine. Service at the desk was good, and first look at the room was okay. Then everything went down hill. My wife used the bathroom, but the door was warped and wouldn't close??????? The air wasn't cooling, so we went to the desk to get another room. This also had a bathroom door same as the last; couldn't close. We stayed the night, but couldn't understand that all the lights in the room were low. I couldn't read my newspaper and my wife couldn't read her book. Checked the bulbs and all low wattage. What a JOKE!!! and then went on our planned activities the next day. We returned after dinner, went to our room and the carpet was very damp, almost wet. Papers we left were very damp??? Went down to the desk and asked for a the owner. Told they live on site?? One came and we explained our concern, she went to the room and agreed that there was a problem?? W were there for 2 nights and in 3 rooms. We what's this about?? I said this is not what we had expected and asked for compensation. She offered to give is 5000 points as we are gold members with Choice Hotels and gave us some gift cards for McDonalds. Apparently this is an ongoing problem as she had a handfull of these cards??? I did not receive my 5000 points and tried to work with corporate to get this resolved, spending off and on 3 hours on the phone to someone in some foreign country. Noted that the owner/ manager was name Patel which the family owns every Wyndam and Choice Hotels in the USA. Sad that no Americans own any of these. We need to learn that USA doesn't own or controls any Hotel chains?? and we have to be subjected to the lousy standard from non-Americans. We are fully disgusted and travel OUR USA frequently and will go to the :Mom and Pop Motels/Hotels rather than the chains. This is very...
