The Good:
I loved the staff! Special shout out to Chris & Carrie for always looking out for me during my several month stay in Hot Springs. Friendly, informative and just plain hospitable. I really appreciated their service and wish them the best!
Also, I'd like to give a shoutout to my favorite housekeeper Mona! Upon one of my rotations home I had forgotten 2 SSD drives that I use for data transfer between jobs. Not only did she find these important items and set them aside. Chris then called me and let me know she had found them and he'd keep them safe upon my return the following week.
Why is this so critical? I've left chargers, batteries, etc. and come back to ask about said items 30 minutes later and they are gone. Getting the "we'll keep and eye out for it" line. I know where those items went... into housekeeping's pocket!
I bought her a gift card for ice-cream and a personal thank you to show my gratitude. Honesty is hard to come by these days and it must be rewarded when found. The staff is great and I can't thank them enough for it!
The Bad:
Being moved out of my room so the owner's family could have use it. When I'm assigned to a job I'm stationed to an area for months. Meaning I don't travel lightly as my hotel is home away from home. Moving me out of a room just so family can have that room when there were 20+ free rooms the owner could have used. I was infuriated. It's why the rest of my team refused to stay and likely won't go back.
The owner / family park their white car right up on the ramp close to the hotel everyday. Do they not realize how annoying that is for guests to have to maneuver around their car to check in. Especially guests like myself who have numerous items to transport? Here is the kicker... when Chris was running the front desk I saw this same car parked around the corner...OUT OF THE WAY. So now all the sudden that car is all in everyone's way? Please stop parking in front of your hotel. Your car will be fine... this is Hot Springs... not NYC where you have to watch it like a hawk.
Don't use the free Wi-Fi. They are watching! Now, again, I'm stuck in a place for months. I game and watch Netflix in my few hours of off time. I finished work one day, attempted to connect to Wi-Fi and couldn't. To troubleshoot I created 2 hotspots using 2 devices and was able to connect. Tried Super8's and was blocked. Seeing this as a challenge I know exactly what they did. So I bypassed it and connected again to confirm. Then breaking out my own packet monitoring tools I was able to detect exactly what was done. All transmissions are logged. So beware.
Should they deem your internet usage a problem for any reason they'll cut you off. This is unacceptable! So I'd recommend not using their free Wi-Fi for any reason. The further away you are from the front desk the less likely you'll be able to connect anyway. Bring your own hotspot. You've been warned.
During a travel over the labor day holiday, I found myself without a place due to a severe thunderstorm that left our camping area flooded. In attempts to "quick fix" the situation I hastefully booked Super 8 not checking the dates properly before approving. My error left me without a room that evening and booked for a week later. I immediately called the Hotel and was told no refunds/changes and hung up on. We slept in the car that evening.
After returning from my travel and 120 hours prior to my booked room stay. I called the Super 8 again to see what I could do about this reservation made in error and if I could at least open the room up for someone else in need. I asked if the hotel would allow someone else passing through, to take the room already paid for, saving them a buck and allowing a free stay essentially. The women informed me that I would need to call the manager Nina on the following business day--she was the only one authorized to approve this request. I was also informed by this employee to call Super 8 mainline and the booking agent I used. Following the instructions, I did all this and informed the manager of the Super 8 location would be the only one to approve a refund and/or ability to have me pay for another patrons stay.
I called Super 8 Hot Springs SD speaking to Nina, the manager. Nina was rude and aggressive noting that she would not allow another to stay in this room I purchased nor would she lift the cancelation policy. Nina went on to say that "no one is in need for this day" and the room will just go unused if I do not show up.
Unfortunately, there was no refund and no ability to give this paid room to another patron. How hard is it to tell an unexpected patron "hey, we have a room--it's already paid for all I need is your ID and a CC to ensure no damages are done" I would love to walk into a hotel and have that happen to me. Nina is rude, aggressive and unworkable--even in the kindness of...
Read moreAffordable and pleasant stay in Hot Springs, South Dakota! My friends and I recently had the pleasure of staying at Motel 8 in Hot Springs, South Dakota, right off Highway 18, and we couldn't have been more delighted with our experience! From the moment we arrived, the property impressed us with its huge parking lot and evident new construction, giving it a fresh and well-maintained feel. Our rooms were impeccably clean, and the bathrooms were tidy, stocked with all the basic amenities we needed. It's truly a place where you wake up to breathtaking views of green mountains and vast meadows in the foothills – a perfect start to any day in the Black Hills! The absolute highlight of our stay was the host. He was incredibly welcoming, genuinely kind, and went out of his way to provide us with valuable information about local restaurants, making our evening plans much easier. Adding to the value, the motel offers a continental breakfast, which is a fantastic bonus, especially considering the already affordable rent price. We highly recommend Motel 8 to anyone traveling to Wind Cave National Park or simply passing through on Highway 18. And don't forget to say "HELLO" to the owner's cute little boy👦 – he's sure to...
