2025 Update! Hawaii Hotels: Prices Plummeting Like Crazy from January to March!

We just spent 5 glorious nights at the Hāna Kai Maui & can’t say enough good things about it. We’ve stayed in Hāna many times at a friends house before for 1-2 weeks so we knew the area pretty well in advance. We spotted the Hāna Kai Maui from kayaks on Hana Bay during our previous visit & remembered what a perfect location they had. We stayed 1 night in unit #3 & 4 nights in unit #1 and both had spectacular views of the beach & sunrises. The staff was very friendly & helpful. A special note of praise to Epo who when we called frantically after hours & after checking out, leaving Hāna to go to Kaanapali for 5 more nights, went back to the property to look for my wife’s missing jewelry which we later found in the rental car! She was super helpful & compassionate, thanks Epo! We enjoyed grilling on the very nice gas barbecue under cover near the grass & beach which helped with the food budget. Parking was extremely convenient which made unloading & loading a breeze. The decor in both rooms was great & especially tropical in unit #1. We feel there is no better option in Hāna when it comes to lodging & view at a fair reasonable price. Anyone making the trek out to Hana needs to seriously consider staying at least a couple nights there to take in all that the Hāna area has to offer, break up the drive & especially consider staying at the Hana Kai Maui. You’ll be glad that you did! We’re now in Kaanapali & although it’s nice I gave to say I miss our room & the views we had in Hana. Aloha!

We booked our stay here from Capital One Travel. Unfortunately, it did not say on the website that there was no AC at this motel (legally, this place can't even be called a resort - it's a motel). That was issue number one. It was EXTREMELY UNBEARABLY HOT and there are no trade-winds as many reviews will mention. If you use an AC at all in your everyday life, no need to even read further. This is not the spot for you. I went with my pregnant wife and 1 year old and both were sweating all night. If you think the weather will be cooler or not, you have been warned! Keep in mind for the rest of the review that I will be emphasizing that my wife is pregnant because 1. During her pregnancy, she has made simple mistakes that she wouldn't usually 2. I don't think anyone should talk bad about someone who is pregnant and should not be constantly told that they made a mistake- which you will read about below.

Issue number two was that my pregnant wife booked this motel and accidentally booked the wrong dates (Sept. 4-6, when we were to stay Sept. 3-5).

I called the Front Desk Manager named "Ipo". I told her about the mistake and went ahead and added Sept. 3rd since we were already on our way out there. Once, I got there, I spoke again to Ipo (who acted like she was Susie the owner) and explained our mistake and asked if I could get the 3rd refunded just out of the kindness of her heart since she would still be paid for the 6th since we would be leaving early. She let me know that it was my wife's mistake and that there was nothing she could do because it was booked through Capital One. I explained she could refund the 3rd since I booked through her, but she said it was my pregnant wife's fault and proceeded to tell me that my wife should have done a better job researching the resort about the AC, and getting the dates right. Ipo said that if they sold the room and made double on the room, then only would they give a refund. (So she had the option to provide a refund, but wanted to be greedy about it).

I explained again that I knew it was our fault, that she was still going to be paid for all the days we stayed, but just wanted to see if the manager Susie would be gracious enough to not charge us for days we didn't stay. After I spoke to Susie on the phone, she said she was bereaving the passing of her husband and would think about it. She said she knows Ipo can be really rude in the way she speaks and she is working on correcting her. (They give a survey when you first come there where one of the questions ask if everything could be solved with the FDM, or you had to talk to someone else - clearly Ipo is a major issue). After I got off the phone with Susie, I asked Ipo why she made it seem that she owned the place when I first spoke to her. She said that Susie won't be around for much longer and she'll eventually get the place anyway. Blew. My. Mind.

Other horrible things about the spot that other reviews have also mentioned: You can't walk on the beach barefoot since it's all rocks. Can't get in the water. Lots of insects and lizards. No TV. Rooms are dreadfully outdated. Our screen door wouldn't even close. Which was fun to try to keep the lizards out. The walls are super thin, so my 1 year old got to listen to a neighboring couple having playtime. P.S., I recommend looking at the replies from Ipo to most of the bad reviews on here. You can tell she is a problem for the business with her lack of customer service and professionalism.

UPDATE: The response from the owner is the same Ipo person. I know for a fact because I heard Ipo tell Susie on the phone that she thought I was a social media influencer. When I talked to Susie, I confirmed that I did not say that I was an influencer nor did I say I was going to blast their resort on social media. Susie explained that she understood that Ipo does exaggerate. Even until now, I have not posted anything about this resort outside of reviews. Just looking at this response as well as the many responses on 1-star reviews, you know that this person is Ipo and not...

Our room was magical. Seriously the best hotel stay we've ever had. We stayed in the oceanfront studio, Popolana unit #2, for two nights. It was really, really tough to leave but the room was so relaxing that had we stayed much longer my bones might've melted. I truly could sit on that lanai and gaze at the bay all day, just watching the waves roll past from right to left and listening to them crash on shore, rumbling the stones. Unimaginably peaceful. Even though there was some construction noise during work hours due to some fixes they were making to the roof (would've been nice if they warned us of this before we arrived), in the end it didn't have much of an effect on our enjoyment. The room was sparkling clean, spruced with a bouquet of fresh tropical flowers. The kitchen and bathroom were stocked with almost everything you'd need as a guest, including dark cloths provided to clean your windshield or anything else that got filthy on your drive to Hana. Really handy. It's evident that they've thought of their guests' needs and do their best to make them comfortable. Only thing we needed that wasn't there were skewers for the kabobs we were making. A quick stop at Hasegawa's fixed that and we left the surplus in the kitchen for the next visitor. The covered outdoor grill was clean and worked perfectly, even though it was windy that night. We didn't have much interaction with the office staff but what we did was relaxed and friendly. The cleaning staff was thorough, and even washed some dishes for us that we didn't have time to take care of after breakfast. Really, this place was perfect. There will most definitely be another stay when we visit Maui next and it will be for longer...
