TLDR: Would not recommend staying here. The location is stunning, but the resort relies too heavily on the location. Extremely overpriced and underwhelming. Lackluster service and amenities at unreasonable prices, does not deliver value at the level of the cost. At this price point, it is to be expected that everything about the stay is exceptional, and it simply is not. If you’re going to pay in this price range, just stay at the Four Seasons.
We stayed at this resort from June 17-21 2023. It is located right in Hana, which is an absolutely beautiful area. However, this resort relies too heavily on the natural beauty of the location and under-delivers in the actual customer service and hospitality aspect of a resort. To start with the positives, the grounds are beautiful. Seriously. Absolutely gorgeous place. The landscaping is nice, the ocean views are incredible, and the pool is huge, heated, and overlooks the ocean, and you can watch the sunset from the pool as well. The pool also has an attached hot tub, both of which are 24 hours, just quiet hours after 8pm. There is a poolside bar with food and drinks able to be brought to you at your chairs. The food and drinks are good. Hana is a naturally gorgeous place, and this resort is right in the middle. Tons of insane hikes/beaches nearby. Unlike many resort hotels, this one feels more like a retreat. It is unbelievably quiet, serene, and though there are many rooms, you do not encounter many people. Probably less than 10 people at the pool was the most we ever saw while there. You really feel like you have the resort to yourselves a lot of the time. There is 24/7 concierge availability by text. However, there were multiple issues that we encountered that you simply shouldn’t at this price point (1600/nght). Housekeeping did not come every day, or when they did it was super early (8am), and we did not have a do not disturb sign. Water was not provided every day, had to message the front desk multiple times for water. Restaurant and service were terrible. Hana ranch store was out of stock on many items (including sunscreen, which this was the only place to get sunscreen as no sunscreen is offered anywhere on the resort) and employees were unfriendly to tourists. The resort should either completely redo the restaurant and store areas and staff them with hyatt employees trained on customer service or completely sever ties with both and let them be independent. I think at one point they were and hyatt just paid to associate themselves with the hotel for guest convenience. For the price of the stay (four seasons range) i was completely underwhelmed and disappointed. We stayed at the four seasons hulalai and the staff, food, and housekeeping services were at least 3 times better at the four seasons for a similar price. If you’re going to charge four seasons prices, then every aspect needs to be exceptional. Poolside servers were super lazy, forgetful, and slow. There were only a handful of people there so that was disappointing. No water refill stations anywhere, no laundry services, bungalows felt dated and old with yellow stains on curtains, light switches etc, and super creaky and loud wood everywhere, bathtub clearly just has a plastic outfit over the original, sliding glass door on the back did not slide well at all in the track, was yellowing and stained and dirty, difficult to work with. The bathroom was the exception, aside from the tub the bathroom was nice, clearly recently updated. True updates should be done on the inside of the bungalows and in the common area. We had multiple power outages and they extended far beyond the 5pm end time, into 9-10pm. Pool only had 3 umbrellas for 10-12 sets of chairs? $1600/night and i can’t sit under an umbrella at the pool? So many little things like that, not getting any water, losing power, not getting daily housekeeping that makes the price tag unjustifiable. Pseudoluxury resort as it seems outfitted from a pre-existing condition and hyatt ‘renovated’ to give it a modern resort feel but...
Read moreYOU NEED THIS INFO. I have visited the Austin property when it was apart of the Travaasa group. The experience at the Austin location was AMAZING, so much so that my friends and I went back 3 months after our first visit. So my friends and I could only imagine that Maui would be even more amazing—it was NOT!!
For the amount of money and time you spend to visit this resort, I believe its important to know what you are being given, and not.
I was a recent guest (2/6-2/10/19) at Travaasa Hana. First, let me say that there are several “gems” at Travaasa Hana—including the concierge staff, the bell men, and some of the staff at the Preserve restaurant. Many of them anticipated our needs and/or offered help when they saw we needed it most. If it were not for them, our experience would have been subpar in EVERY way...and this review would be 2 stars.
The guest accommodations are dated at best. I understand that Hāna is remote, but it’s not Bora Bora. There’s visible, rust, dust, and dated decor throughout. They have a team of grounds people and I am not quite sure what they are busy doing. I saw visible rust, loose plates, unkept items in many common areas as well. Towels were left strewn about at one of the pools overnight well into the next day. There were also no towels available at this same pool for several hours. Easy fix, call and ask for more—-well, that took them almost an hour to deliver?!! We had two amazing waitstaff at the Preserve, turns out they were mother and daughter. The remaining wait staff were terrible. I believe it’s because their tip is pretty much guaranteed, especially with us as we were on the Total package. Oh and they charged us incorrectly several times which was a nightmare at checkout, knowing that we were on the Total package. This never occurred in Austin. You get the picture....a lot of mediocrity for a five star resort.
The culmination of our poor experience occurred on the day we checked out Sun., Feb 10. We were awakened by a call at 7:20 AM, from the front desk supervisor. She was concerned with whether we were booked on the first flight out, which I appreciated. Once we told her that we were in fact on the evening flight the call ended with no further information given. We rushed back to the room during a delayed breakfast to remove our luggage and check out. We gave our keys to the same supervisor. After sitting for hours in the common areas, we were advised by other employees that normally when guests are leaving on the evening flight, they are allowed to remain in their rooms longer. At no point in our interactions with the supervisor did she offer this. Remember, she’s a supervisor.
When we attempted to check out, our folios were riddled with errors. We were incorrectly charged with meals, our spa bills had not been separated (as requested PRIOR TO OUR ARRIVAL), and our spa credits were not applied, although we were on the all inclusive Total Travaasa plan. When we noted the discrepancies, the supervisor began to correct them. Understandably, she would become frustrated as the power surged—however the computers functioned long enough for us to work on the bill with her. When we began to discuss the errors with the spa bill, she seemed perplexed on how to handle the incorrect accounting. She made no attempt to offer a solution, so we offered to go over to the spa and try to clear up the discretion. We were then given the run around by the spa and the front desk.
The supervisor then stated that she would work on our accounts and she asked us to give her time to do this. Not having anywhere else to go, we sat outside of the restaurant. We then were taken care of by Alex, Jason, and Hubert—thank goodness for their kindness! As you can imagine, we were quite frustrated by this time. We checked back in with the front desk about an hour later, since the supervisor had not come over to say that things...
Read moreSituated on 75 sprawling acres above Maui’s rugged eastern coastline, the Hana-Maui resort is a welcoming retreat from the tourist hubbub. We stayed in one of the resort’s fabulous oceanfront bungalows that provides privacy, ample space, and sweeping coastline views.
A visit to Maui is not complete without experiencing the iconic beauty of Hāna. Maui-Hana’s Plane to Paradise Package made the journey easily accessible, transporting us in style via a Cessna that flew us from Maui’s Kahuli Airport directly to Hāna, and, after our stay, to Honolulu. The flight provided incredible vistas of Maui’s northern coastline and waterfalls (as well as views of Moloka’i and Lānaʻi on the trip back), while allowing us to avoid the long, perilous Road to Hana.
At the resort, we rented a jeep so we could drive to destinations in eastern Maui at our leisure. Whether walking the grounds of the resort to admire its many vistas and the hotel’s lava-rock accents, lounging by the elegant infinity pool or taking in the view from the spa’s private courtyard, Maui-Hana brings extraordinary comfort to the wilds of Maui. We made friends with guests and the bartender while enjoying mai tais by the pool and received therapeutic massage treatments at the spa. The entire hotel staff—most of them long-time locals—were extraordinarily friendly and we were thankful to have the valets to shuttle us around the grounds in golf carts.
After watching sunrise from our bungalow’s deck, we were treated to a lovely in-room breakfast from the Restaurant at Hana-Maui—the loco moco was sensational. After a day of adventures, we were revived by a delicious dinner at Hana Ranch Restaurant, where both the brussels sprouts and the ribs with a tangy island bbq sauce were addictive. The beaches of eastern Maui are spectacular and varied: gorgeous white sand, red sand, and black sand beaches. Hamoa Beach is a wide, beautiful white sand beach with a wonderful calm bay, perfect for sunbathing and swimming. Make sure to stop and see the surfers at Koki Beach and try the world-famous Huli Huli chicken. Waiʻānapanapa State Park (reservations required) is a jewel, featuring a unique black sand beach and a trail that meanders through coves overlooking spectacular cliffs, sea caves, and arches. We were mesmerized by the crashing waves.
Just steps from the hotel is a somewhat treacherous trail to a private cove that is home to Kaihalulu Red Sand Beach where, one morning, we had the entire beach to ourselves! We also took our jeep to the Kīpahulu District of Haleakalā National Park, stopping by Wailua Falls on the way.
The waterfalls and Seven Sacred Pools of ‘Ohe’o Gulch are a must-see and well worth the drive. We hiked up the Pipiwai Trail through lush tropical jungles past a giant banyan tree on the way to Waimoku Falls. The highlight of the trail is a serene bamboo forest with lovely waterfalls and relaxing pools where we dipped our feet before hiking back. On another excursion, we ventured underground to caverns created by lava flows.
While we stayed at Maui-Hana three nights, there are so many destinations, it seemed hardly enough. I can’t imagine trying to cram a visit to Hāna into one day with only a few moments at each beautiful site, bookended by a treacherous drive. Take your time. And relax. Stay...
