We chose this location based on our plans to have a 1-day sightseeing trip in Memphis. It turned out to be centrally located for our trips to the Children's Museum and the Rock n Soul Museum. It's also not far from the Mississippi River waterfront area, which has a great walking/jogging/biking trail. Finally, it's easily accessible from I-240.
We were not happy with the small bathroom. For our family of two parents and two kids, both the room itself and the bathroom were cramped.
When we arrived, we opened the door and were greeted with a loud air conditioner. I went to the front desk and asked for a new room with a quieter air conditioner. The desk employee helped me immediately and apologized for the inconvenience.
Another problem with our room was the hand soap dispenser in the bathroom. It only dispensed soap in pea-sized amounts. I requested a new hand soap dispenser at the front desk. We received a new one within 6 hours.
There was exterior painting at this location during our stay. The only problem it created for us was that we couldn't use the exit nearest to our room one time. Other than that, the painters didn't spoil our stay.
The breakfast bar was the usual variety that we expect from Holiday Inn Express. I appreciated the appearance of instant grits - a nice local touch. The fresh fruit offering was inconsistent - bananas one morning and oranges another morning.
They have bottled water in the lobby all day. The water coming out of the tap tastes okay, but adding the bottle water as an option was appreciated.
If you're a coffee snob, use the coffee maker in your room. If not, feel free to enjoy the food service grade coffee served in the lobby.
I used the free weights in the fitness room. I didn't need to use the cardio equipment, but I appreciated the upright stationary bike. I prefer that style over a...
Read moreWhenever we visit Memphis, this is where we always stay. Our stays are always nice. The employees are very polite, and always speak even when passing in the hallway. We normally never have any issues, but this go round housekeeping knocked on our door around 10:00-10:30am. We announced we were still in the room, and they knocked again, which we announced again that we were still there. Housekeeping then proceeded to walk into our room. Thankfully they just cracked the door open as we were indisposed at that moment. Me working in hospitality myself, I can't for the life of me understand why housekeeping is knocking on occupied rooms before check out. I did alert the front desk, who apologized, and stated she wasn't sure why they were knocking, but did admit nobody had been by that morning to get a departure list and or vacant dirty report. These reports can definitely stop incidents like this from happening. I did reach out to the GM who I have yet to hear from, so I decided to do a review, so that management is aware that these things are happening. Being an employee, I would hate to see this happen to a regular guest. I understand, housekeeping is a tedious job, and they are eager to get started to get their day over with, and to ensure the arriving guests have rooms, but check out time also has to be respected for the current guest. We will be returning, because we do enjoy staying at this location. I'm just hoping this issue is resolved, so we don't have any surprises...
Read moreWe stayed in Midtown for a wedding for 5 days, the cost was higher than surrounding areas and we expected a decent hotel experience. The rooms are terribly small, the beds are so worn that you actually fall into the body grooves. The walls of the bathroom were rusted and painted over, and there were long black hairs on the walls, sink, and floor. We asked for our towels to be replaced twice, we gave 3 bath towels and 3 hand towels and were only given 2 bath towels and 1 hand towel for three people to share. We had to have our two room keys re-keyed each time we left the hotel. Once they stopped worked overnight and were left on the dresser away from any cell phone (they were quick to tell us it was our fault for keeping them by our phones).
We had a rather rowdy group next to us who banged on their door at all hours of the night, a dog to the other side who barked each time the others knocked on their door. The door frame had a large gap so that it was almost pointless to have a closed door.
The security team accused us of moving their parking lot barriers the morning we were set to leave. They watched us haul the trolley to our vehicle and then back into the building but still felt the need to accuse us of moving their barriers which were on the other side of the parking lot.
We visit Memphis often but we will never stay at this hotel again. I'm ashamed that as a IHG hotel this is how we were treated and how run-down the hotel...
