Our stay..... Monday, December 9th, 2024: Drove up 4 hours from home (New Orleans) with a teenager. I know my way around Natchitoches, and have seen the house many times. I wasn't "awe struck" by the area like someone who has never been, yet was still impressed by the spacious and secure driveway parking behind (New Orleans folks know what i mean), as well the beauty of the home. You enter through the back, and I appreciated this. It's cozier that way and feels more like a home, as opposed to some anonymous and bustling hotel lobby. I did not notice the "no kids" policy until I was on the website looking up info while we were already there. No one said anything to us, and she is clearly a minor, but i would inquire ahead of time to avoid any misunderstandings? Could be more like "no kids under 12", or a case by case basis, which I absolutely agree with. That being said, I booked this for her 13th birthday so she could see the movie for the first time IN the actual house. We were the only tenants that night, and had the house to ourselves. Found the only place boiling crawfish this early (not yet in season), and ate outside at the same picnic table that is in a couple of scenes! We watched the movie downstairs, and I laughed as she kept pausing or rewinding to walk back and forth, seeing if things were "still the same" in the surrounding rooms. The caretakers are extremely personable and polite, the owners are very helpful, and the room (Shelby) was PERFECTION! After this we took an evening walk in our bed clothes to see the lights downtown. I felt like I traveled at least back to the late 80s or early 90s, which I loved. Woke the next morning to the smell of breakfast cooking, and were served in the formal dining room. SO much food, and we were given a box to take away (since we don't waste in our home), and eat later. Momma Rose was so sweet, and you aren't leaving without being fed and taking a coffee. It put me in nostalgic feelings of my own momi who has been gone for quite a while now. I will definitely be back with girlfriends and gays (we all know how much the boys love Dolly). Moving forward, there is no other way I want to view this movie. Being in the house lent an authenticity to the scenario that cannot be outdone.
I read some of the other reviews, and I want to say this: this is a bed and breakfast. If you want to see the house, book a night, tip the staff! Owning an iconic home does not mean you and your tenants should be subject to random people invading the space. One of these said that people are wanting to walk up to the front door and mad at being told not to?! What a sense of entitlement. I can't imagine how violated you would feel if this had happened to you, at night especially? Don't let the bad reviews of folks that didn't stay here or get a free tour negatively influence you. Take advice from a person who is hard to impress anymore because of the watered down, insipid Disney tourism that New Orleans has become. Immerse yourselves in what the oldest city in Louisiana has to offer, and the most famous estate in Natchitoches. It was the crown jewel of an historic and nostalgic experience, and ABSOLUTELY worth the trip! 🎄⚜️...
Read moreI've never seen the movie, but bought a nite's stay for the wife who loves the movie. We were in town just to see the town for the weekend.
It was hard to rent a room, no one answered the phone when I called either number. Finally I answered a return call and they had one room left, so I took it. It was expensive.
When we arrived, no one was there at the appointed time we told them we would arrive. Had to call the numbers again, and got a call back saying they were grocery shopping and would be back in about 30 minutes. Got another call, from another person, who said they'd have someone right over, and they arrived a few minutes later and got us checked in. So, not a big deal, just kind of weird and extremely laid back for a business.
I must say, everyone we met that worked there were extremely friendly and helpful. The room was fine, bed was very comfortable. The tv in the room made a beeping noise on certain channels, I didn't care much because I'm not there to watch tv. The staff made recommendations for places to eat and things to see in the area. The historic district downtown is within easy walking distance - 4 blocks or so.
It's a bed and breakfast style place, breakfast was served at 9 and it was really good. Eggs, bacon, hashbrowns, fruit, and biscuits and jelly. The owner was there that morning and was having pleasant conversations with all the guests. He told us a story of how he bought a $25000 bed, which we later saw on the house tour. It was in a locked area of the house, and I gather we got to see it just because he was there and said we could.
Speaking of which, we got a tour of the house, and in the living room there was a tv and DVD that had the movie Steel Magnolia's playing. My wife watched it with other guest, I rested and watched tv upstairs in our room.
Everything was really great as far as the stay and the people. Making the reservation and checking in was a little difficult, and the room was expensive, but otherwise...
Read moreAs a fan of the Steel Magnolia movie I was in heaven staying here. We were in town for the opening of the Christmas Lights Festival. The exterior of the house, the grounds and some of the rooms are just as pictured in the movie. The house was beautifully decorated for the Christmas season. We stayed in Shelby's room and I can now say I took a bath in the same tub (the original) that Julia Roberts did in the movie! We had an electric fireplace in our room and enjoyed having it on while watching the Steel Magnolia movie in our two comfortable chairs Breakfast is served at 9:00. We were served juice, yogurt with granola, scrambled eggs, two slices of bacon, grits and two biscuits. We were not told to get our coffee in the snack bar area and to bring it to the table and it was up to the guests to leave the table, go to the snack area in a different room and bring it back. I felt rude getting up from the table with six other guests there, and them coming back with coffee. I think they could have had cups and saucers in the place settings and a carafe or two of hot coffee on the table. Huge supply of snacks - five kind of chips, homemade cookies, fruit, cinnamon rolls, cereal, water, sodas, juice, tea and coffee and even ice cream! Front and back porches have lovely sitting areas where one can enjoy coffee, tea etc. House is on a busy main street and the traffic was a bit loud in the evening but then it was the opening night of the Christmas Festival. House is within walking distance of the historic downtown and there is adequate parking at the house. I give Deja five gold stars for the great orientation to the house and...
