We have been going to these lodges since I was a young girl. My mother was taken there by her parents when she was a young girl. Basically it has been passed through the generations for good reason. The A frame homes have all you could need after a quick trip to the HEB down the way. The lodges themselves are right on a lovely stretch of the Comal river and it great for kayaking, swimming, snorkelling, and fishing. You can see straight through the water it's so clear and quite cold too! They also have a pool, game room, grills, and kayaks, paddle boats, and canoes for rent for cheap. Deer come and visit the property in the evenings and its a soght to see. It's also a mere 15min drive to Schlitterbahn, downtown, and Gruene.

Lots of potential in this property but unfortunately is not well kept. Beautiful pool and a nice shower were the perks, but the rooms are small and in need of some cleaning and maintenance. We could not believe the stains on our furniture. The toilet didn’t flush and the amenities are a minimum. A coffee pot is supplied in the room but no coffee. Early check in is $50 extra dollars. If you have children, are elderly or care about your safety you may want to request a room on street level. The metal staircase is a little unnerving and metal door is painted black and scalding hot. So be careful!

Situated at the headwaters of the idyllic Comal River, Heidelberg Lodges are a rustic but very fun place to cool off during hot Texas summers. Don't expect much from the accommodations themselves; the value comes from having a place where kids can act like kids, and where they pass out at the end of a day full of swimming in the river and pool, fishing and catching turtles and frogs, and making and playing with new friends. Feel free to leave the iPads at home!

Our family has gone to Heidelberg Lodge for many years and it’s a place that has held wonderful memories for all of us. Sadly, we will not be going back. The property has become so outdated and in need of major maintenance and upgrades. The cabins have not been updated in our time of going there. The walls are paper thin and you can hear ANYTHING in the adjoining cabins. The a/c unit outside our cabin was so loud that we couldn’t sleep as it rattled and rumbled each time it turned on or off. Electrical plugs are sparse in the cabins and most of the ones that are there don’t properly work. We even had a microwave that was sparking fire. Three years ago, I spoke to the manager, and she said that their plan was to update a few cabins each year. Obviously, that had not been done so I asked the her about it on our last visit. She said she can’t do any remodeling because if the city came and had to issue needed permits, that they would shut the property down. ||The bathrooms are so small that you have to sit sideways on the toilet. The shower faucet in our bathroom was coming out of the wall and the ceiling in our bathroom was taped together with duct tape and patched with spray foam insulation. ||The beds are uncomfortable and need to be replaced. The couches, well, no telling what has happened on all the couches through the years. Everything just needs a good steam cleaning. The carpet is dirty and needs to be removed. ||The open air game room used to be the center of attention for our children with ping pong tables, pin ball machines, paddle boats. It now appears if things break around the property, they no longer repair them.||The only thing that has changed over the years are the prices and for the amount that we paid for a weeks stay, we could have rented much nicer condo or cabin elsewhere in New Braunsfels. You pay 5-star prices for a 1-star property. The office staff and on site manager aren’t welcoming like it used to be and they seem to be bothered with any questions you ask. It’s just so sad as to how neglected this property has become. Its sad to read the comments|from people who grew up here but will not return. Yes, we know that nothing stays the same forever but this place could do...

I’ve stayed here several years and this will be my last. I’m going this year because it’s to late for our group of 10 to find an available place on the river for our annual vacation. For years when our group left in August we made our reservation for the following year. Since trying to confirm our August 2021 reservation starting in October 2020 people in our group have experienced the following:

  1. one cabin received an email in late 2020 confirming her cabin and dates. When she called to pay her deposit in early 2021, she was told her reservation wasn’t for the dates on the email and Heidelberg refused to honor the reservation email they sent her.

  2. Heidelberg called the other 2 rooms in early 2021 in our group saying if we changed our dates to match our friends dates that were changed for her, they’d upgrade our rooms to compensate for all of us having to change our vacation days. We took the upgrade.

  3. after receiving the upgrade 2 months later in April 2021, I get an email and phone call saying someone else wants the cabin I’m in so I no longer can have my upgraded room and they won’t honor my original room number reservation! To correct this they give me a free night.

  4. the last straw came with an email in June 2021 saying they increased the price on my room! Yes to compensate themselves for all their incompetence Heidelberg raised my room rate 2 months before I’m supposed to be there and over 4 months after I made my initial deposit to secure a reservation.

I don’t know if there’s been a management change or an ownership change but this used to be a nice place to stay. Since October 2020 I’ve made reservation for Heidelberg, Rome Italy, 2 lake house cabins, a hotel in Dallas, and 2 Galveston beach house. My Heidelberg reservation is the ONLY one that’s been a horrible experience or experienced changes from what I originally received a confirmation for. Don’t try...
