To be honest when we first walked into Wedgewood Inn it wasn’t what I expected but I was willing to give it a fair shot and I looked at the experience with an open mind. I could look past holes in the pillowcases, greying frayed towels, and stains on the rug and chairs. It’s an older place, what can you expect? That turned out to be the least of our troubles however after we had several interactions with Carl the owner. Carl checked us in and from the beginning was short and condescending. While checking us in he was rude and short with another woman who was attempting to check in because she unexpectedly got a call from work. He told her that she had to go take the call outside. It was raining and cold. He then brought us up to our room with no explanations about the inn or the protocol for breakfast.
Prior to arriving we received an email from the inn explaining that due to the recent pandemic breakfast would be brought to our rooms on a tray and our orders would be taken the night before. After Carl dropped us off in our room he left without a word about meals. Before we left the inn for the day to walk around New Hope we stopped in at the office to ask about breakfast. Carl was very dismissive when we brought up the email saying “that was old news” his tone then became rude and he told us that it would really help them out if they knew when we planned on coming down for breakfast. We told them "Maybe around nine?" Carl then rolled his eyes and said “Of course. Just when everyone else will be coming down” as if it were our fault and we were inconveniencing them. His wife Nadine told us "Oh we’ll make it work" but we felt awkward and as if we were an inconvenience rather than a paying guest. We received no other instruction on breakfast past that and we went on our way.
When we came down the next morning there was no one there except for a family sitting down eating in a room just off the staircase. We had come in through this room initially and it had 2 other tables set up for breakfast. So after a minute or two we walked in and sat down at an open table. When Nadine came in later she took our orders for coffee and tea and brought out our food out and was very nice and pleasant. The next morning was much the same only there were two other couples already seated in the breakfast room at the tables set for two. There was one remaining table that was set for three so we sat down there. We waited about 5-10 minutes before anyone from the inn came in. The waitress was again, very nice, and introduced herself and told us what breakfast would be and brought us fruit and yogurt. Carl walked into the room and looked at us and said very rudely “Oh so you’re the ones who took the 4 top table” we were stunned and felt terrible. We apologized and said we didn’t realize and explained it was the only table left. He told us he had to seat other people outside because of us. We offered to move and he told us that we had already “unsanitized" the table now. He then told us to wait for someone to seat us next time and walked out angrily.
Apparently there was another room for breakfast as well but since we were never told that or shown where anything was when we arrived we had no idea and just sat the only place we knew. One of the staff was kind and apologized to us saying that Carl probably hadn’t had his cup of coffee yet. I was so upset after the way he talked to us that I had to run back up to the room because I actually started to cry and was extremely embarrassed. I would never recommend that anyone stay here based on our...
Read moreI am going to review this bed breakfast based on our experience of one night stay this past weekend. I will include both pros and cons to be fair but I do think that people need to know what they're getting into... We paid a total of $250 a night with taxes included. Pros: the location of the house is the best part. You can walk downtown easily. The area is safe and quiet. The backyard is beautiful and seems well taken care of with plenty of chairs and seating. The house from the outside looks very pretty, is well lit at night. The house manager Elise is very pleasant and easy to talk to. Cons: What you see on the website as far as pictures go is not what you get. We checked into our room which was very dark and had coverings thrown on all surfaces. The bathroom which had a cloth tub was layered with towels, unnecessary furniture ( a lamp and very old table with a tablecloth and knick knacks spread throughout) when we open the windows which were layered with shutters and pull down shades that were broken we find the windows spray painted with a stencil for privacy I'm assuming but it's just weird and dirty. We asked the owner of the house if there was a window unit air conditioner available and she replied "yeah that's not happening." In fairness she did call us 10 minutes later and offered to change our room. Which we did. The fresh baked cookies seemed nice until you turn them over and they were Brown as hockey pucks. (Quality control.) The bed was comfortable but they have taken an old closet and "retro fitted" a shower in there which was creaky and falling apart. The sink in the other closet bathroom was cracked and loose. Also layered with old towels, and such. I said to my daughter "well at least the breakfast will be good tomorrow morning." No...... There was fresh cut fruit and the coffee was good ..they offer warm croissants and an alternative bread but the quiche was definitely Frozen and tasted like powdered eggs. No meat ,no orange juice, cranberry juice, etc milk. they might be trying to save money by not offering any breakfast meat but that seems cheap for $250 a night!!! Lastly these old houses are beautiful and should be shared but when you have collected Knick knacks, books, China, pamphlets, furniture everywhere etc for many years you might want to think about decluttering. There are throw rugs on every surface. Lastly you might want to rethink the homemade almond liqueur? It is in every room and no one knows what has gone into it. Also...
Read moreMy husband surprised me with a weekend away for our anniversary. What a fabulous surprise! We stayed in The Hideaway Suite - which is as romantic and old fashioned as it sounds. But, no worries about the amenities - they were top notch. Heat, A.C., fridge, microwave, chocolates, and other very special touches. The room was wonderful - and just what we needed for a romantic weekend celebration.
The breakfasts Saturday and Sunday morning held us until dinner! Delicious fruit, yogurt, granola (yum), rolls, quiche, eggs, croissants, and never ending coffee or tea filled us up and tasted scrumptious. I have some dietary restrictions - and special requests were all met with care. I was really impressed. The Inn is so beautiful inside and out - there's so much to see and admire.
The setting, in New Hope, leaves tons of things to do in the area. The owners have brochures with tons of ideas to do and places to see. And, with Lambertville being just a short walk over a bridge - the possibilities are endless! On Saturday, we walked all around New Hope, meeting people and taking in the sights. On Sunday, we went into Lambertville, and scored a great garden decoration in one of the many antique stores. Parking is tight, but available. However - and this is important - no car at all is needed if you are going to explore New Hope. The Inn is literally 2 blocks away.
We took a short drive to a comedy club in Newtown on Saturday night - there are numerous things to do a short drive away as well. Literally, from the moment we arrived until we checked out, we were treated like royalty. Carl and Dini were so nice and so full of great information in the area. I would LOVE to...
