I stayed in the bay view king for 2 nights on week days. This was my experience.
I have positives and negatives below but if you don't want to get into the details just read this: Moxy in oakland is a awesome new spot that I left feeling very happy about, they have some work to do in my opinion to get themselves together both with how they market thier rooms and the way they are running it. In my mind this is a bit expected for a new place. I would recommend going here just for the experience. You will leave feeling like you got to say a really cool oakland spot with fun all around you.
THE GOOD:
The bikes! Free bike rental with the room, this was so convenient for us.
Free drink and they are pretty good, the signature drinks are well balanced and the old fashion was made right.
The feel of the lobby and the rooms is very modern and cool. It's like a icon when people walk by they notice and want to come in. Lots of places to lounge around or do work on a laptop from.
The staff is very nice. They let 4 of us play beer pong in the lobby later in the day. Everyone was very accommodating and doing thier best to give me a good experience.
The rooftop lounge overlooking the street is a great place to hang out with friends.
Suuuper dog friendly. They all loved my little pup and let her hang out with us in the lobby.
The location is surrounded everything. It's in the heart of oakland. It is walking distance to many of the best bars and restaurants in the city. It was a perfect so we didn't need a uber.
Decent street parking and loading area.
I was a few minutes late checking out and they were ok with it.
THE BAD:
I don't understand how they can market a room as "bay view" our view was a bunch of AT&T trucks then grungy looking buildings and then the city in the far background. We couldn't see the bay. DONT go here hoping for a good view there are better hotels around for that. It's just too far inland and not tall enough.
The room was small, it was nice don't get me wrong but tiny spaces, not the best work from room experience. Also even though everything was new and clean a few things were broken. The vent didn't work (they told me it was silent but idk about that) and the thermostat was all garbled up on the screen (ac and heat still worked fine) Also the water pressure was pretty low and did not get very hot, it was good enough but not anything special.
Let me start by saying the lounges are beautiful buuut I don't know what the designer was smoking when they designed some of these chairs. For example up on the top lounge the bench seat has a back but if you lean on it, it just falls apart and does not support you. My impression is that the most important thing to the Moxy was how it looks so you can get your instagram picture but they didn't care if it actually works as a functional chair.
Again, I want to start by saying the staff was super nice and helpful buuut they didn't know what they were doing half the time. Probably just a symptom of the place trying to get it's footing and the staff being inexperienced. I never was actually frustrated or anything it was more like "is this place being ran by a teenager" really though nice people, just don't expect any kind of super professional experience from them untill they figure things out a little more.
There is a restaurant opening soon but it is not open yet. They have small bites now that are pretty good but nothing to really get exited about.
This last one is not on them but it is something to be aware of. You are in oakland during a crazy time in the world. You are going to be approached by cracked out crazy people who want money from you. Moxy does thier best but there is nothing more they can really do. I went to walk the dog later at night and there was a guy trying to get in so I had to wait across the street for him to leave so I could get back in. Wasn't a big deal to me but it might be to some.
Oh and this is a wierd one but all of the doors are super heavy for some reason. Maybe not a real negative just...
Read moreStayed 4 nights recently, my feedback is below.
Good: Hotel is quite new, room was clean (heads up if you are not familiar with Moxy the rooms are small, this is as expected with the brand as they focus on more social space).
Good lounge space on the ground floor that was comfortable and had different areas so you can find a spot that suits you.
Enjoyed the cocktails at the bar and the flatbreads they make are pretty darn good too.
Location is close to the train station to get around Oakland or the Bay Area. A bit sketchy in the surrounding area, but generally pretty good leading to and from where the train is. Other than the person that checked us in on our first night (see below) the crew were friendly and good to us. In particular found Alex, the Assistant Manager to be engaging and easy to work with. Honestly felt so well taken care of was going to send a kudos for Alex (decided not to after improvement #2 below).
Improve: We had a rental car for one night only when we arrived. We parked right outside and because there was no signage in the area asked the front desk if we could park there. They confirmed it was fine but a high risk of break in. Next morning we had a ticket for $66. Understand it may not be their responsibility to know the street, but perhaps tell us you don't know if it is ok if you don't know?
Also at check in the front desk agent claimed there was no daily credit for each occupent in the room as platinum elite. When I spoke to Alex, the Assistant Manager almost 24 hours later he confirmed we should have been offered $20 per day for the two of us or a total of $80. We lost our first day of credit by the time we talked to him and the next night we were going to but there was a monthly block party happening and we could not even get close to the bar when we came back. We did manage to spend $80 but after day of calling the hotel looking for Alex we finally got him and he credited us $40. Alex had told us he didn't mind if we spent the total $80 in less than the total time because of the delay in activating our credit but then still only gave us partial credit.
The sink in the bathroom is very small and as a result was hard to use.
Overall this was so close to being a solid 4.9 star experience. Unfortunately this particular stay was made negative due to a few preventable issues. Will I go back? Undecided, leaning towards a no. Should you stay? Yes if you are able to negotiate being on a higher floor or back of the building. Lower floors in the front could be impacted by some street noise and the first friday of the month has a big party with DJ on the ground floor which could keep you up if on...
Read moreI was so excited when the Moxy Brand Hotel came to the East Bay!! Its located right down the street from the legendary Paramount theater and many other Oakland shops, eateries, dispensaries and historical destinations. However, I understand the strategy of where the hotel is located in downtown Oakland but the area is literally in the hood 💁🏽♀️. It's no threat to me, however there was constant homeless foot traffic, the Taco bell across the street is the local slum hangout. there was a car with a busted windows right on the corner of the hotel, which was still there upon check out.. 😅 now obviously I enjoy this brand and despite the location everything else was awesome inside The Moxy. They lock the main doors at 7 p.m. until 8am and you need a key card to get onto the elevators. The bar what is pretty much always Lively and it is open to locals until a certain time, which is awesome for the community. I truly enjoyed the female boxing gloves in the gym also the Sundeck on the 2nd floor, overlooking Oakland.. I always request a hi floor which I believe I was all the way up on the 7th and I actually could still see the Bay in San Francisco in the distance from my room which was nice to watch as a sun came up and down. Since I am an ambassador of Bonvoy, I was surprised with my name written in the elevators as well as a welcome gift & hand written postcard from the staff 🥰 in addition Moxy has a pretty cool tradition where you get one free signature "Moxy" cocktail from the bar, which they always suggest you come back down and retrieve once you are settled in! This is my second visit to this property and they always have great music going at the bar and its a full bar with a few select menu items. You do need to show proof of vaccination to dine. I ordered the chicken Naan which I watch the hotel staff who so warmly checked me in also hand craft my Naan and it was delicious! 😋 I had their ham and cheese croissant in the morning, which was okay however it certainly could have been toasted a little less as you can see! But I was still sufficient to get morning started. I was granted late check-out so I was able to come back to the hotel and enjoy the afternoon on the Sundeck until around 4 p.m. overall I would visit Moxy Oakland again or rather suggest it for locals 2 have a nice, vibrant and fun getaway from home or for a lonely Traveler who is in town for a short trip, or those cultures Lovers to relax there as they enjoy the essence of Downtown Oakland nightlife, on the weekend! Overall I...
