I don’t normally write reviews.
Actually, this might be my first time ever writing a review.
It was bad. It is bad.
For reference, my family is driving across the country from San Diego to Chesapeake, VA. We have stayed at Hilton properties in Phoenix, El Paso, Houston, Mobile, Jacksonville and now this Hampton inn in Newport News. All this week. This was by far the worst of the week and probably the worst hotel I have ever stayed in.
For starters, we tried getting a digital key, and it was unavailable. I called the front desk to get the key issued and was told the system was down. (Should have taken the hint, as this was the only hotel that this didnt work) Honestly, by looking at the doors, I’m not sure if they have a digital key system.
Once we got to the hotel, initial reactions were positive. It “looks” decent, but the longer we were there, it is just lipstick on a pig.
Upon entering the hallway/stairwell (we had our dog so we chose to use the stairwell) you are immediately punched in the face with the smell/feeling of mold and dust (I don’t know if there was mold and dust, but it smelled and felt like it).
Getting into the room, that’s where most of the issues were.
It’ll be easier just to list them.
Crumbs were left on the counter and stove. The air conditioner unit constantly drained, all night you heard running water as the unit drained, it probably needs maintenance. The toilet handle rotated 360 degrees every time you flushed it. The toilet clogged up overnight and I plunged the toilet myself, and even after it was emptied it would still not flush. We found eyelashes on the lamp. My daughter woke up to an ant in her cup of water. The towel holder was loose on the wall over the toilet. The toilet roll holder was barely hanging on. There was a hole in the ceiling of the kitchen where ants were crawling. One of the kitchen chairs were broke, and my son almost fell out of it. Exposed pipes in the closet. Carpet was stained. And, it just smelled bad, like must or mold or old water.
It seems like they rennovated the room but didn’t actually fix things. Reminded me of a bad landlord, but I’m not saying they are bad, just reminded me of it.
The cherry on top was the gym. Just looked bad, functional but...

At least for now.
Bottom Line Up Front: This hotel was being renovated creating a less than optimal environment. Based on what I saw during my stay, it was due for some refurbishments. Now is not the time to stay at this Hampton Inn, however going forward likely it will be nice.
My room was clean, but there were issues. The bathroom sink did not drain well; the lights over the desk were not working, and another light crackled and flickered so much that it reminded me of the scene in Back to the Future when lightning struck the clock tower. the bathroom door was separating at the seems, some wallpaper was separating and the tub was stained.
The check-in/check-out was very smooth; and most staff were pleasant and helpful. There was adequate parking on site.
The room was clean but not as quiet as hoped. Th climate control was easy to control, but you could not turn on the room fan to continuous to block out exterior noises.
The fitness center on site was so-so. It had older models of a Precor Fitness treadmill, elliptical and recumbent bike. The rubber grip on the elliptical was coming off. It also had a newer Peloton bike. To round out the equipment, there were some weighted fitness balls. The room did not have any fan or cooling system so the air was stale and could get hot. The room was clean-ish, had towels and access to water.
The on-site pool was closed.
The continental breakfast was standard Hampton Inn fair (DIY waffles, cheesy omelets, some proteins, coffee, juices, fruits, pastries and cereals). However, some mornings the dining area was shared by construction workers that were doing the renovating.
There is a mall nearby and several restaurants within walking distance.
I recommend giving this hotel a pass for now, but checking it out after the renovations are...
