Had I known that Manresa Castle was not in the very good shape of a Replica Castle or that the party would continue into the early hours, we would have never paid to stay there. |We did not get the room that we rented. Read moreManresa Castle Hotel was featured on one of the episodes of my fiancé’s favorite shows Ghost Adventures. Based upon my father being a Foursquare pastor while I was growing up, and my establish Christian faith; I don’t necessarily believe in spirits getting stuck for whatever reason. I do however believe in angels and demons. Going in I assumed that all stories where poppycock as it didn’t make logical sense that a demon would allow itself to be monopolized by a commercial hotel.
With that foundation established here is our story.
On 12/2/2020: we drove four hours from the Southwest WA Coast to Port Townsend. Upon arriving at the Castle we checked in with a wonderful lady at the front desk in Room 209 (a hotel room that is not considered haunted). We grabbed pizza and wine at a local place, and the front desk attendant provided us a bottle opener and informed us that it looks like we will be the only ones in the castle tonight. She also let us know she would leave around 10:00pm, but gave us a 24/7 on call number in case we needed any service.
My fiancé wanted to journey up to the third floor, which our the reported haunted rooms. We went up there and it was eerily, but nothing more than the rest of the place, which I accredited to it being more than 120+ years old. Inside the room was spacious and the king bed was comfortable enough. Both the heater and water took a long time to heat up, which is accredited to the building being so old. The television in the room was surprisingly new and great quality. The fridge was old and hummed loudly, so we just switched it off.
I fell asleep very early at 9:30pm, after a long day of hiking and driving. I was awoken by my fiancé’s extremely cold hand at 11:00pm. The room at this point was easily at 80+ degrees, and rest of my body was sweating. I asked her what was going on, and she told me something keeps pulling my hair. I said what? Why is it so hot? She replied she turned on the heater because she was so cold. I went and turned on the lights, and noticed she had a huge bruise on her right knee cap. I asked her when she got that and she said that must of just happened, but she didn’t feel it. At that point I realized that their was a sharp feeling all around me. It wasn’t fear as much as it was dread. A bottomless pit of dread. At that point, we both agreed we needed to leave this place. As we where leaving the feeling of dread seemed to follow us all way to our car. Once we drove out the feeling disappeared, and we where left wondering exactly what happened. Considering it was 12 when we left in a post COVID world all other hotels would not let us check in. We ended up driving 4 hours home, which was preferable too spending anymore time in that room.
I rated it 5 stars because the castle is beautiful, service was excellent, and it is well priced. I also cannot fault management for us leaving when they clearly advertise the hotel as haunted. Would I recommend this hotel to others? Well I would leave that to buyers discretion. I truly believe their is a demon in that place, and for that reason I’m never going back. Our experience was probably unique to the fact we where completely alone in the castle. So there you have...
Read moreI had initially booked my stay at Manresa Castle as part of a weekend getaway to celebrate a honeymoon for our 18-year wedding anniversary (Halloween). As a couple we enjoy visiting historically rich areas and exploring them. Manresa Castle is certainly one of those locations in the Pacific Northwest.
I was informed, via e-mail, approximately a week prior that there would be a Halloween Costume Party hosted by the hotel. No worries, I've been to plenty of hosted events at hotels in the past. We arrived to the hotel around 4pm, placed our luggage into our room, got comfortable and left Port Townsend around 6pm to go have dinner. When we returned around 8:30pm the parking lot was filled with cars. Cars were parked extending for blocks along the city streets while people packed into Manresa Castle. I had to walk inside and ask for assistance in finding a place that was suitable to park without the risk of being towed away. I was then directed to a garage that was quite a distance from the hotel to park my car in front of. As we walked back into the hotel it was crammed with people and we were getting bounced around as we made our way back to our room on the second floor. Imagine frat-house parties you see in the movies where people are running around holding beers in their hands and screaming over the sound of loud music thumping. That's what it was like. And yes, it was like this all over Manresa Castle. Including in front of our room. Then we got to deal with the wafting odor of people using dab pens in the hallway which I popped my head out the door and watched (they kindly offered but I refused). People talking and hollering in the halls until 2-2:30am. The next morning, we woke around 6:30am to get ready to leave and discovered the hot water didn't work in the bathroom sink. We went to check out at 7:50am. On our way down to the receptionist desk there were beer bottles littered all over the place on the floor in halls and on tables in the lobby. Reception area was closed by a curtain of sorts so I placed my room card somewhere kind of close enough under the curtain. Upon exiting Manresa Castle Hotel there were pumpkins smashed all over the parking lot.
This was a completely disorganized and chaotic event that showed immense disregard for the paying guests. It was also a great disrespect to the history of the building. It was a disheartening experience overall.
The room we stayed in was decent enough. I liked the vintage reproduction refrigerator and large walk-in closet. The placement of the television in relation to it blocking the use of chairs in the room was odd considering the height of the ceiling and how raising the television 30-inches higher and tilting the screen downward would have allowed use of both chairs and made for better viewing from the bed. It was quaint, but the charm was lost by the horrible experience.
