We were looking for a stay-cation during these crazy times we are all living in. My husband looked all over Portland and outlying areas for a place that had a connection to nature, felt safe and gave us a sense of not being isolated at the same time. Oh yeah, we also need separate sleeping areas (hopefully bedrooms) because after being together 25 years, we have picked up snoring and talking in our sleep that make it more enjoyable that we have our own sleeping space. Quite a tall order for a stay-cation:0)
Well, after much searching, we reached out to one of the “finalists” on our short list, the River's Edge Hotel. When I called the front desk Donald answered. I was really just blown away at how kind, thoughtful, helpful and caring he was. Although they did have a suite with a “slight view of the river”, it was mainly city view. We have a city view in our place now, so we were really looking for a full river view. Due to some health issues for me, I can't get around super easily, so having a view of the river was important. So, we booked the slight river view suite.
I'm not exactly sure the course of events after booking the room at first, but I called back a few times as we weren't sure exactly the number of days, etc. I spoke with Zee (spelling?) and if I'm forgetting anyone else, I apologize. Again, Zee was absolutely wonderful. During our conversation, I asked if their was anyway to configure our room situation to allow a view of the river. A few minutes later, she called back with a list of options; not quite a dizzying list, but certainly great options to think about. Floor level, rooms next to each other, etc. She figured everything out!
We excitedly arrived for our reservation. The hotel takes all precautions and then some; social distancing, mask wearing, disinfecting, etc. Additionally, Dillon who was at the front desk, was professional, helpful, charming and again, a wonderful help. He got us checked in and off we were. We almost got to meet his dogs as they just happened to be coming in from a walk. We absolutely adore dogs, so that was a treat.
We had a very large 1 bedroom suite with a full river view and it felt like we were up in the tree tops. Oh yeah, thanks to Zee, we ALSO had a separate room with king bed for sleeping separately. All for the incredibly great price for the original corner slight river view suite. The room was clean, well appointed. The bed was super comfy too.
The restaurant just had reopened. They have a great outside patio for happy hour. Tables are far apart, the river is right there and the staff are super friendly too! Francesca waited on us for our first visit. She was fantastic all while wearing a mask. My husband returned the next day and had another wonderful server, but I'm the one who is better with names, so she will just have to be known as the great server for him (sorry). I was so tired from my excursion the day before, that I stayed up in our tree-fort room.
During our stay, the front desk staff was really helpful too. If you are looking for a laid back, comfortable place to stay whether for a stay-cation or if you are from out of town, please give River's Edge a top consideration. While it doesn't purport to be the fanciest of places (Nines, the Duniway, etc), that is not their niche. They also don't have the really expensive price to match. I'm not guaranteeing that they will have availability to give everyone the same deal, but the staff will put in every effort to...
Read moreThe WORST HOTEL I have ever been too!! It is almost comical. Here's the story: I made an online reservation directly with the hotel weeks ago for a king - river view. Week before arrival I received an email offering to upgrade my room to a suite for a nominal fee, which I accepted. Arrived at the hotel, early, about 1:30 pm and was told my room was ready. Checked in (Marissa?) at front desk and went to my room to see that it was NOT a river view, but a 2nd story parking lot view "suite". *suite means it has a small fireplace and couch. Returned to front desk and to Marissa that the room was not what I reserved. Was told that the hotel was sold out and no other rooms were available. Maybe she could move me the next day. Asked for a manager. None were available. Gave me the card of Donovan, the "Director of Rooms". Tried calling Donovan with no answer and he doesn't have voicemail? Call front desk and asked for the general manager. No answer and left message for GM Paul to call me. He never has bothered. Looked on Trivago app only to find that hotel DID have a river-view king room available. Returned to front desk. Was completely ignored by Marissa, so spoke with Kevin. Told him my dilemma (although Marissa stood there and acted like she was unaware) and asked why there was a room on Trivago. Kevin said I had booked the wrong type of room (?) and asked if I booked thru 3rd party. WTH???? I said no, I had booked directly with the hotel and was guaranteed my room. He said there were no other rooms I could stay in and I asked if every guest had already checked into a room since it was only 3 pm? He said no, but they didn't hook there rooms wrong!?!?! I called BS and told him to find me a manager. He said none were around. I tried calling Room Director Donovan, again and he answered and met me in lobby. Explained the previous 17 steps to him. He looked and suddenly found a room, but it needed to be cleaned. Gathered my stuff from parking lot view room and went to wait in lobby. Was told by Donovan that he would buy drinks and snacks next door for me while room was cleaned. Has a glass of wine with nice bartender. He forgot to enter oyster order, but it was after 4 and room was guaranteed to be ready. New guy at front desk looked at me like I was speaking a Foriegn language when I asked if my room was ready. No. Can you tell me when. No. Can you ask someone. No. Unbelievable Found Donovan. He said it was almost ready. 4:30 (30 minutes after guaranteed check-in) room ready. Donovan give me keys. Go to 2nd floor room at far far end of hall. 2 windows face office building to the north, about 30 feet away. Watching people watching me. One window blind torn in 1/2. "River view" is view of trees on balcony separated from other balconies by a tarp. Back to lobby, find Donovan. He apologizes, but can't come see room because he has a "tour". Says he will send maintenance man up right away. 5 pm. No Maintenance man. I surrender. Grab bag, head to front desk. Tell Kevin I'm leaving. He said "I don't blame you". Donovan finds us waiting for Uber and told home we were leaving. Never apologized. Reserved room at Kimpton Waterfront. Moved to Kimpton Waterfront and met by a very helpful and gracious staff! Super nice and clean room waiting for me.
AVOID THIS HOTEL unless you like staying somewhere where you get lousy service and a terrible room for...
Read moreI had the misfortune of reserving the King River room for 4 nights as a staycation and for my significant other to have a nice view and fresh air to help with his emphysema. First night the toilet overflowed and it should not have overflowed for what was done. A man came and “fixed it”. Well in the middle of the night I went to the restroom and it overflowed again. The front desk moved us at 1:00 am but hopefully the last 3 days would be ok. We were put in a room with no balcony or view. We tried to give it a chance and I told Hillary, the front desk woman, that we were very unhappy with that room. The only reason we didn’t go to the Radisson Red because of the river view. I expressed how unhappy we were. So 7 hours later, we were moved for a 3rd time into a room with a river view however the smell of gas from the fireplace made us nauseous and we had a headache. I did tell Hillary and her response was that they know about it and that’s just how the smell is and it can’t be fixed. We left first thing in the morning. The whole experience was exhausting. Hillary told me she will apply some type of discount due to all of the moving around and by the way, the second room had a plumbing issue too. We had to jiggle the toilet flusher every single time it was used. So Monday morning, we left and then when I saw my charges on my account there was no type of refund and on top of that, I was charged for 2 nights of parking that I told her several times on Saturday and Sunday that we parked our car at our house. She assured me that it was taken off and of course it was not taken off. I waited for the transaction to finalize and I emailed the general manager and I have had NO response. The room that we reserved days prior, had plumbing problems and we did not get a comparable room. They do not care about their guests. I can’t tell u how many times I overheard her telling other guests that she’s too busy and will call the engineer regarding what else?....their bad plumbing in their room! This is not good service. I have never been treated so poorly and I did not expect that any of these things would even happen. Moved to 3 rooms in 4 nights and we were so exhausted by then so we did not move from the bad gas leak smell in the last room and that is how we ended our staycation. Even if I was treated with respect and kindness, then it is easier to excuse the rest but even that did not happen for us. Now we are overcharged and I emailed about that and now I can’t get a response. Out of all of the beautiful, organized, hotels in downtown Portland I have never been treated with such disregard and disrespect. I want my parking charges put back onto my card since Hillary promised that she took care of it in the system. If someone can care just a tiny bit and fix the issues that I am still having despite that I checked out on Monday and it is now Friday. So yes, I am holding Hillary accountable for telling me that she will make sure to apply a discount and to not charge us for the last 2 days for parking. Nobody has even reached out to any of our emails. You have my contact info but I will my email address again.
