I almost canceled my stay here due to all the bad reviews and stay at the brand new hotel down the street. I'm glad I didn't! All the odd ball bad reviews complaining of things that are just hard to believe.
My stay of 2 nights here was without any weird problems at all. The only reason I give 4 instead of 5 stars is the layout of this hotel is very spread out and so involves a lot of walking if you end up with a room all the way at one opposite end of the long wings with stairs in the hallways. Using the rolling luggage carrier is not very easy with the stairs.
This is a convention center facility, so it's a large property. I saw this before I got here, so I requested a room near one of the remote entrances. My request was happily granted by the staff, just call a couple of days before you get here. I got a nice room at the end of a wing and a short walk to my car. No stupid loud foot traffic with this location.
The front desk staff was great at check in. I was even able to get into the room early before official check in time. I asked nicely and was granted 2 free breakfast vouchers for the in house restaurant. This hotel even offers 500 extra rewards point if you forgo housekeeping on your stay of 2 or more nights. I 'll take the points and there's plenty of towels in the room. Do join the IHG hotels rewards program, it's free.
I was a little worried getting a room on the second (top) floor, with this Redding heat of 100+ and having the AC keep up. You know all those bad reviews complaining of everything! Not to worry! The AC worked really well. The room was a nice larger room with 2 vanity sinks, one in the shower room and the other on the outside with lots of counter space. A mini fridge and microwave comes with the room. I'd say the decor might not be the most modern, with all kinds of USB and power ports on the desk and LED lighting, but it's perfectly nice and clean.
I didn't see any creepy crawly things running amok or hairs on or in the bed that weren't my color. The hot water was endless. The AC kept the room super cool, almost too cold, even with the 100+ heat outside. The WiFi worked fine running about 20 -25 Mbps, easy to stream Amazon or Netflix in HD and have the laptop hooked to the TV for viewing.
The King bed was just fine, no big saggy spots or spring poking my back! The pillows were good and had different firmness to choose from. Workspace to set up laptop and anything else was good and had good light.
Breakfast was nice and no problems like some people report.
The food was actually pretty good as was the service and wait times for food. The hashbrowns were the best!
I'll stay here...
Read moreThis place appeared nice from a block or so away. However upon pulling onto the property, it was very apparent that not only did the grounds need to be cleaned, but the exterior of the building showed signs of needing attention as well. There are mold and or water damage stains most everywhere you look on the outside. The campus was littered with trash, including but not limited to discarded face masks, fast food cups, bags and partially eaten food and OMG, the cigarette butts. They were everywhere, from the driveway and throughout the parking area, to every entrance of the building. Even in the swimming pool area and all around the hot tub. It was very disgusting. We would have just passed on by to find a cleaner place to stay if it had not been for the fact that I paid for the room online and could not get a refund. At check-in the front desk person was friendly enough, but was confused and confusing trying to give directions. On our way to our room we needed to weave or way through carts, and other housekeeping supplies that crowded the hallways, with no housekeepers in sight. Our room appeared clean and nice upon entering. However, the furnishings were chipped marred and stained. There were 2 large patches in the ceiling over the beds that were loose, poorly matched as to color/texture and about to fall. The beds were old and very uncomfortable, although the bedding was clean as well as the towels. (the only pluses we found). Back to the pool and hot tub. The pool had dirty debris laying at the bottom and other stuff floating on the surface. Now for the hot tub. All I can sat about it is, YUCK! I would give a pig a bath in it. Or then again, maybe that is what they use it for. Oh yes, I almost forgot that the alarm clock room next to us went off at 6am. I called the front desk as no one was staying in the room, to request someone to come and turn it off and was told that when "They" arrive she would send someone up to address it. Well, it continues until 8:12 am. All in all, we were very dissatisfied with this establishment. In the future when we visit Redding, California, we will find other...
Read moreRedding obviously has public safety issues when the front desk's first recommendation is to not leave anything In a vehicle and to park up front. Add to that that I saw for homeless people (one of whom begged at my car window) within a block of the hotel upon going to dinner and I was a bit unsettled and did not sleep well during my stay, concerned I might lose my car. The fence around the property and patrolling security guard may be the best choice for the hotel.
The room was comfortable and quiet for a Spire member, but the only elevator is at the far rear of the property and there was a set of stairs from the front desk to the rooms and another set halfway back, so you will most likely be you moving suitcases over stairs.
The Wi-Fi was AWFUL in the rooms. I could not connect at the room's desk and standing by the door I got a minimal connection. In the hallways the Wi-Fi was fast. The maintenance man for the hotel said they have been trying to improve it but the brick structure was causing issues. On the plus side I brought that to the staff's attention and the front desk was very understanding and would have given me a key to another room if the hotel had not been sold out.
As other reviewers wrote the restaurant has severe staffing issues. The morning of my departure, I was forced to sit at a table next to a family with several small noisy children because all the other tables in sight had uncleared dishes except for the two other tables with people actually at them. As I was reviewing a map at the end of my meal, the waiter presented the bill and within less then 10 minutes came back four times to collect it when I had obviously not touched it where he had left it. It almost seemed like he was trying to close the bill on his last customer and go home, although this was in the middle of breakfast and I was one of only two tables. The food tasted good though, if a bit overpriced - maybe lowering the prices might attract...
