Paul Bunyan Resort — Hotel in Rice Lake

WOW. We spent a week in the most awesome, beautiful clean cabin (we booked the Coffee Pot #5) with excellent views of Rice Lake right out our door! The grounds have pristine landscaping (the flowers were fantastic) and we had our own new dock and boat. We walked around town and ordered a healthy smoothie at the Olympic Fitness Center! We walked down to the Band Shell and took in a free concert and walked around the amazing Veterans Memorial Park. Only one day with occasional rain, so we actually had time to play cards and work on art projects. Never turned the TV on once! The owners, Barry and Julie, really great hosts :) took us out on a very scenic pontoon ride around the lake, pointing out special homes and some history of the area. We sat around the campfire which is always a good time. We went to a place called Bargain Bill’s which was great fun and mom renamed it Barnacle Bills. One of our new favorite shops is Thyme Worn Treasures. Julie says a new Hobby Lobby is coming to town this fall. Seems like a week is never enough time, but soooo relaxing!!! My husband and I had a trip planned for Aug 20th-26th 2017.We were certainly looking forward to our vacation trip. It looked like a very nice place. ||We were visiting Traverse City Michigan in late May. We live in central Indiana. My husband became very ill was put in the hospital there. We spent 26 days in hospital. He was then flown by air ambulance back to Indiana. He is now in the hospital in Indianapolis. We are looking at a very lengthy recovery. I called on 6-16-17 to cancel our reservation. It's 9 weeks till our vacation there. Was told that we could not get our 200.00 deposit back. It's not there policy to return deposits.I asked if we could rebook for next year and use the deposit that way. I was told it would have to be used by the end of the year. Can't do according to the doctors he won't be strong enough. Just be aware they will not refund a deposit. This stinks they should put it on their web site that this is...

I did not stay at this resort but simply stopped by to say hi to some friends who were staying for the summer in their RV, but who happened to be out shopping when I arrived. The behavior I experienced from Mr Owner was less than pleasant and frankly quite rude! His actions, facial expressions and comments made me feel like an INTRUDER. When I asked if he was the owner, he said "Yeah, what do you need? Not a pleasant "Yes. How can I help you?" And when I did a Y-turn to leave, my back tires apparently were on the lawn (not newly seeded or anything and the lawn had obvious ruts from previous RV's) and he said to me "Would you stop driving on the grass?" Very petty in my opinion. I certainly would not recommend this place to ANYONE based on my less than 15 minute interaction with Mr Owner. I can't imagine what faults he would find or how rude he would be if you were an actual guest staying for any...
