A beautiful new hotel in Salem - we visit Salem often to see family. The Holman is a welcome addition to hotel options!! It's beautiful, well maintained, with friendly staff; and rates are very reasonable. Great location - we enjoyed a lovely walk in the Riverfront Park and checked out many downtown bars and restaurants - all within easy walking distance of the hotel. As others have mentioned, we were a little leery initially about the "valet only" option for hotel parking - but this was really great. They had an easy-to-use app that makes retrieving a car super easy. Coffe bar staff were also super friendly and helpful. Being dog-friendly really put this place at the top of our list!!!
The only reason I am rating this as a 3 star vs 5 star: Housekeeping Management. The housekeepers themselves were AWESOME (thanks for such a great job - housekeepers have the hardest jobs at hotels - and these were top-notch).
However, the Housekeeper Management left us very disappointed. We stayed for 7 nights. Our room received full housekeeping on days 1, 2, and 3. On day 4, we noticed late in afternoon, that we had not had housekeeping. As we left for dinner, we stopped by the front desk to simply ask; the housekeeping ?manager?lead? was there with front desk staff and explained: -since COVID, they don't service rooms daily -all housekeepers had left for the day -if we needed towels, she would deliver them
All reasonable (except that hotel opened this year; well after COVID, so that first excuse didn't make sense). When we returned after dinner, fresh towels had been delivered. And the tip we left on the un-made bed had been collected - off of the still unmade bed. Uhh.. we left that tip for full housekeeping; not simply dropping off towels - and why was she looking at the bed if only dropping off towels? Shady...
Ok... we were ok at that point, at least we got fresh towels. Unfortunately, that was the last time housekeeping came to our room. We had no housekeeping for the next three days. I kinda feel bad for the housekeeper who had to turn the room after our stay - we had three days of uncollected garbage and a lot of dirty towels. I really hope that the last three days of our stay didn't get a "housekeeping skip" just because we asked for towels....
If indeed, housekeeping has been adjusted due to COVID, it may be a better practice to service rooms every-other-day instead of servicing them for 3 days in a row, and then not again.... just a suggestion.
Aside from not great Housekeeping Management, a great hotel -we'll stay there again - and will hope that Housekeeping Management...
Read moreWe had to drop our son at OSU and decided to stay here as it was the only Hilton branded hotel in the area with a separate sleeping area (about 30-40 mins from campus). The hotel is modern and gorgeous. We had the corner suite with queen bed, kitchenette and separate living area with a sleeper sofa. Being on the top floor we has access to a narrow balcony that is shared with the rest of the floor and sectioned off by large planters. The bedroom had a barn door and was on the smaller side (if you’re comparing only that space to a whole single queen room) but had its own TV and lamps with outlets and USB port as well as a wireless charger on the alarm clock. It also has its own H/C system, but it was temperamental. I would set it to cool, but would shut off once it reached the desired temp, and then eventually I had to turn it back on once the space got too warm again. The living room unit didn’t appear to have the same issue. Overall the suite was plenty of room for our family of four. Sharing the sleeper sofa wasn’t ideal for our tall teenage boys, but they survived the one night before dropping off big brother. The bathroom was huge, but a shelf in the bathroom for one’s own toiletries and a towel hook closer to the shower would’ve been helpful. There is a nice restaurant and bar on the lobby, though the menu felt rather limited. We all found delicious meals to order, but didn’t feel the need to return our second night. However there is a larger variety or restaurants within walking distance so no shortage of dining options. The hotel is located on a busy road so there is traffic noise, and the riverfront park’s bandshell is close by so there may be noise coming from the during events. We never heard other guests though, but not sure how many were near us and obviously no one was above us. It is valet parking only but the garage is securely located within the building. I needed to retrieve something from the car and the valet escorted me to our car, keeping the key with her the whole time and telling me about their security which gave us piece of mind with the vehicle being packed and an expensive bicycle on the back. The whole staff was welcoming and very helpful. Will definitely be staying here again when traveling...
Read moreI stayed here in August 2023 on vacation. We went hiking all day exploring Oregon, with a check in at 4pm. I called at about noon-1pm to ask for an early check in at 3pm. I was told I'd have to check in at 4. We had nearby dinner reservations at 5pm, so it still worked, we just had to waste an hour - no big deal. We show up at 4pm, the room was not ready. I was told that it wouldn't be ready for some time. The staff in the hotel clearly did not care beyond general pleasantry - this was ordinary business for them and it clearly happens with some frequency. At about 4:30-4:45 I started to look for other hotels online because it's insane that the room isn't ready. The room was finally ready about 4:45, giving me and my wife about 15 mins to shower, change clothes, and walk to dinner. The 'compensation' for my room being nearly an hour late was "premium wifi" - the premium wifi was a joke, it was worse than most ordinary hotel wifi I've experienced in my life. I can't believe anyone would pay for it. I also didn't come to Oregon to sit in a hotel room on wifi. Since COVID, my experience is that hotels rarely clean rooms during your stay and often do a half baked job when they do. So, when I'm booking a hotel all I'm booking is for you to let me check in on time and let me stay until check out time, as far as I'm concerned. I called in advance to ask for an early check in, so you knew I would be there by 4pm, but the room still wasn't ready. I researched later and I found out that Hilton let's certain honors members check out as late as 4pm, which is also the check in time, leaving zero time for cleaning a room. So, some corporate policy allows someone else to check out at 4pm, the room still needs to be cleaned, so I can't get in until 5pm. What a ludicrously stupid idea.
The rest of the stay was pretty ordinary. But, again, your job is to let me check in on time, and stay until check out, and you tripped and fell on the first step.
I will prioritize Marriott in all future travels. They still have the dumb 4pm policy, but apparently it's much harder to reach the status to make...
