We chose the Woodland Motel in Salida, Colorado, because we were traveling with our two small dogs. This accommodation was wonderful, as it was perfect for our needs! We stayed in Room #14, which has a kitchen, king-sized bed, separate living area (divided from the bed area by a partial wall), with small dining table, & bathroom. The pluses were being able to have our dogs with us, being able to pull right up to the door to our room (motel), a serviceable kitchen & table to eat on, comfortable bed that was darker for good sleeping & somewhat separated from the living/TV area, & wonderful hot tub w/ spa towels. We also enjoyed being able to sit at the deck-type table & chairs to the right of the office.
I don't know HOW they do it, but the owners of the Woodland Motel HAVE STAFF! Everytime we needed to check with staff on something, it was easy to find a person on duty, typically the housekeeping staff. They kept the entire property extremely clean & neat. A part of this is that, as a guest, you must pick-up after your dogs' pottying, & they make this easy with a dedicated "potty area" & providing "poop bags" for this. We especially liked that our room was not carpeted, which helped with our worry over the dogs shedding (there was an indoor door mat & a mat by one side of the bed).
This motel has well-maintained complimentary bikes that you can "check out" for a quick ride downtown. Speaking of, you'll for sure want to check out downtown Salida; there are many great restaurants, cafes, breweries & shops. We went to the Safeway for our groceries & got a lot of good deals there after signing-up as a Safeway member & downloading their app. It is so close that I walked to it in ~15 minutes.

Read moreDriven by a bunch of times, always thought it looked really cute. Besides one hotel downtown I believe this is the only hotel that isn't on Hwy 50. It's walking distance to the river (across the street and behind the baseball diamond). There's a small public access for fishing (but it isn't a large area before becoming private property.) It's walking distance to downtown (although on the longer side, maybe not a walk for small children.) The staff is super friendly, helpful and nice. The rooms aren't fancy and are a bit dated (like early 1990s). Everything is clean and there are rooms with full (I kid you not, FULL) kitchens! Full sized gas stove and full size fridge. Plenty of towels (which is rare), both kitchen and bath towels. A kitchen table with 3 chairs. There's no desk/work area but the table is much better than many hotel desks. I love strange little details so the little clothesline over the shower is really cool. The room has a wall unit AC which is brand new and works awesome! But even better...the windows open!!!!! There is a small parking lot and/or street parking. Only suggestion... upgrade the size of the TV. It's not super small or bad quality but could be upgraded to a slightly larger TV that gives guests the ability to stream via Bluetooth. I plugged my Roku into an HDMI port on the back. So if you have kids or want your Netflix, remember your Roku and an HDMI cable. Hidden gem of a hotel. Family owned and operated. There's a groovy outdoor...
Read moreMy family had a room booked for 2 nights recently. I called about a month in advance to book the room as we have a dog and needed a king size bed to sleep with our 1 year old safely. A very pleasant woman got us all taken care of and I quickly received a confirmation email. This was supposed to be the last stop on our vacation. Unfortunately, the night before we were headed to Salida, we all got very sick. We got up the next morning and were very sad to have to make the call to re-route and head home early as my one year old and myself were getting sicker by the minute. I called the motel to let them know that we were going to have to change our plans due to illness. We knew that we were past the cancellation period to get a refund and understood we would probably have to just lose the money. I once again talked to a very friendly woman who was kind and compassionate regarding our family being ill. To my surprise, she even refunded our money. I'm sure there are times when it doesn't make sense business wise to do this but instead of being hard and firm with the cancelation policy, it worked for her to not charge us and extend some kindness. Had they kept our money, I would have not complained but maybe we would book here again, maybe not. Because of the kind gesture, we will definitely book here again in the near future. Guest service and kindness go a long way for...
