We are return customers of the Holiday Inn Spearfish due to having family in the area. The last time we stayed, renovations were in process and we were happy to find the results with this stay. We were treated kindly and efficiently at check-in as expected as Platinum level Rewards Club members and were upgraded to a suite as well as offered our "rewards perks." The suite was huge with a separate bedroom. It smelled fresh and was newly updated with new carpet, wall covering, furniture, and decorations. The mattress/bed may have been new as well and was very comfortable. The lighting in the room was wonderful and much better than most hotel rooms. The room was quiet. There was a college football team staying on our floor and we didn't hear a peep. The only downside I can think of on the room is that the bathroom is a little small. However, we do like having the sink and mirror outside of the actual shower room. We did not use the pool area/hot tub this time. But this property has one of the good old fashioned large pool areas with room to spread out and maybe have a little gathering. (Much better than the little chlorine saturated closed in rooms most places have now.) There is a pool table and other arcade games and two hot tubs. We did have a drink in the Lucky 13 lounge and had lunch there as well. This is a nice restaurant with a sports bar/lounge attached. Very good food with generous portions and great service and also great popcorn! No continental breakfast at this hotel, but I believe you can get a rate with breakfast included if you want. We did not need that this time. Hotel is located right next to a couple of other restaurants and some shopping as well. Highly recommend staying here and will...
Read moreThis hotel was a major disappointment from start to finish. The property is in extremely poor condition and far from what you would expect from an expensive Holiday Inn.
The cleanliness was unacceptable. The rooms were not clean with stains visible on the carpets, ceilings, furniture and even the bedding. The bathrooms were so bad, the shower head has more water pressure coming out of the side from a leak. The beds themselves were very uncomfortable and to make matters worse, the rooms reeked of smoke despite being labeled as “non smoking.” It was impossible to relax in a room that smelled that strongly.
The on site restaurant was equally terrible. The food was so poorly prepared that it was barely edible, easily some of the worst I’ve ever had at a hotel restaurant.
Another major issue was staffing. During our stay, there appeared to be only a couple of employees running the entire property or maybe not cause the only person we saw was at the front desk. Debbie, the front desk agent, was the one bright spot. She was incredibly kind, professional and doing her absolute best to help everyone despite being completely overwhelmed. She deserves a huge recognition but one person cannot possibly run a full hotel. There was no maintenance staff on duty and one guest even mentioned that he had to fix a problem in his own room because no one was available. That is completely unacceptable for a hotel at this price point.
Overall, this property is run down, dirty and extremely poorly managed. It does not live up to the price point or maybe even health standards. I do not recommend staying here. For the price they charge, you will be much better off booking literally anywhere else...
Read moreThis hotel pretty much checked all the boxes . . . clean and comfortable, friendly and helpful staff, delivered on all expectations. Our first-floor room with both indoor and outdoor access directly to a parking spot was extremely convenient for those of us staying with a dog . . . and made loading and unloading very easy. Our pooch appreciates that they allow pets.||This hotel seemed "old school" Holiday Inn, with its large footprint, layout, and overall "vibe". They ought to erect one of those gigantic, iconic Holiday Inn signs that dotted American highways last century. The large pool area, with "poolside" rooms, and the overall layout, gave me nostalgic vibes; remember the "Holidome" concept of long ago (Holiday Inn's branding of its pool areas)? You could almost imagine 1970s station wagons parked in the lot. I'm not saying this to be negative, I'm just pointing out that an added value of staying here for those of us in middle age is it may evoke memories of childhood vacations. ||The on-site restaurant, "Lucky's", also seemed a throwback to another time, with its dimly-lit frumpy decor. We ordered from Lucky's (and took it back to the room); nothing special but my "Din-o-Mite" salad did not have the grilled chicken it was supposed to have, so I had to go back to the restaurant to have them add it. Certainly an easy mistake to make, but kind of annoying.||The hotel's fitness center was nothing special, but it was passable.||One note: the sink was outside the bathroom. Whether you consider this a feature or a bug is based on your...
