September 5, 2020- The Sleep Inn in West Des Moines is on the east side of I-35, while all other hotels are on the west side. I was leery about choosing a hotel which was away from other hotels, but it was still in a great location which was a safe area. You drive past a McDonald's/Kum & Go to get to the hotel parking lot. A Steak n Shake is currently being built in front of the hotel so another fast food option.
The hotel is only 3 years old, looks great, and is very clean. We had to pay $25.00 for a pet fee which was a little higher than the other hotels in the area, but the total cost was about the same. We came to West Des Moines to pick up our new puppy. Our 2 lb, 10 week old puppy stayed in her carrier the entire time, but I understand that not all pet owners would keep their pets in a carrier.
The room was comfortable and clean. No tub, but I prefer a shower. The shower stall needs recaulked on the bottom so it doesn't leak. The barn-door style sliding shower door is wonderful and keeps the tile floor dry. The fixed shower head was a little high for us since it was only about 8" from the 8 ft ceiling. Someone over 6 ft 2 in might love it, but it needed to be on an adjustable bar for all heights. My hair got wet even though I wanted to keep it dry. The bed was comfortable with five extremely soft pillows. I wish half of the pillows were more firm so I could have had more options. (The caulking info, shower info, and pillow info is for management to read.)
The A/C unit had to be adjusted a lot. Between 5:00-9:00 p.m. it was too cold in the room so we kept adjusting the controls. After 9:00 p.m. the room warmed up too much. I kept waking up and having to turn down the temperature controls. I think we finally set it to 64° to finally get some sleep in a cool room. Normally, when the sun goes down, a room cools off. Not sure why this one did not, but I am mentioning it so the hotel will know about it.
Due to Covid-19, breakfast was cold cereal, mini muffins, granola bars, and yogurt. The website does not say that the rooms have a microwave and mini fridge, but ours did. That was an unexpected bonus. The mini fridge would be okay for cold drinks, but they usually do not get cold enough for lunch meat, etc.
All in all, this was a great hotel in a safe area with very friendly staff. We stayed in room 312 which was in the middle of the hall at the back of the hotel. We did not hear any noise from the highway. I would definitely stay here again if I am ever...
Read moreIf you have a service dog, beware. I've stayed here twice and I have a service dog. Both times they put me in a "dog room". I stay in hotels 3-5 nights a week, I almost never have an issue but when I do, it's a hassle arguing with these people, explaining to them that a service dog is a medical device and that I'm a protected class of citizen by the ADA. So the first time I stayed I walked back to the dog room immediately after checking in and it was fine. It was clean, it didn't smell, and it was right next to an exterior door which is convenient for me. I decided to stay again last week which was a mistake. She put me back in the same dog room. This time I walked in with my stuff and my service dog right away rather than checking it out first - big mistake. There was actual poop still on the carpet and when I turned on the faucet brown -almost grains of sand? - looking things were coming out of the faucet. I took my stuff in, set it down and left again to get food and didn't see the poop on the carpet until a few hours after checking in so I was afraid that if I complained they'd try to blame it on my dog. I wetted a wash cloth and tried to clean some of the many poop stains, laid towels down to walk on, and slept on top of the bedding and covered up with my own blanket. I'm not sure anyone cleaned the room at all - it was absolutely disgusting. I paid $85 to be absolutely disgusted and extremely uncomfortable. To the management : a service dog is a medical device. You cannot put someone with a wheelchair in a special wheelchair room. You cannot put a diabetic in a special diabetic room, nor can you put a person with a REAL service dog in a dog room. A service dog is not a pet, it's a doctor prescribed, very well trained, medical device and many many people depend on them. It is against federal law to discriminate against a person with a service dog and force them to stay in a room...
Read moreIt was a very easy check in ID a card pay. they will take cash with a card for deposit. That evening check in with smooth I didn't even think about paperwork till the next morning checking out at 5:36 in the morning. Gentleman asked if I paid cash I said no I used my card he said it's not in the system they were having problems last night. I was reluctant to just hand in my card to be charged for the second time maybe. so I asked him to check into it while I made myself a cup of coffee for the road which took about 5 minutes and when I came back to the desk of course I'm sure he was a little frustrated cuz the card he said was not in the system and there was no charge he would take it up with the girl from last night. I said I didn't feel right about not paying for the room I would give cash if the card I knew would just be used as the deposit for paying cash. And again he said no there was no charge don't worry about it I thanked him thank him again and let him know I considered it a blessing I got a little choked up for a second and thank him again and I was on my way . at the end of the day at the end of my journey. Two messages from the manager on my phone saying there was a balance due for my room I called explained he was sorry cuz he did not hear this story and he will take it up with the crew and not to worry about it. Again I thanked him and offered but let him know I thought it was my blessing that traveling day. No worries. I also have to say very very clean room. Everybody was kind even with the glitch in the system. Anybody staying here I have to let them know I went to the little steakhouse nearby was wonderful the three fast food places at supper time had full circle lines around the building in their cars steak and shake went around twice. It was worth paying the extra to have a enjoyable meal...
