It was not a perfect stay, but the kindness and the many attempts the staff made to be helpful have earned this place 4 stars.
I am not someone that thinks much of little gifts and staff saying things like "welcome home" when I come back to the BnB (I think such things are tacky), but many tourists might appreciate these kinds of things. What I absolutely did appreciate was the staff's willingness to trust me when I said that 500,000 VND had been taken from my room (left on purpose, but not in an obvious place, such that any cleaning staff would have to purposefully look for it and take it). They explained that they had hired some help from outside of the family (it's usually a family-run joint) and reimbursed me without question. Top form. They are also very eager to find guests things to do, and I encourage everyone that drinks to try some of the Vietnamese craft beers they have for sale.
Now, onto more practical things. The beds are comfortable, the showers are hot, the towels are clean. You are given drinking water in a refillable bottle rather than in disposable plastic. These are the good things.
The showers are that Asian style where the toilet is in the shower. Awkward for anyone not used to it (thankfully I'm used to it). WiFi is pretty weak in the rooms, as the router is somewhere in the hallway of each floor. The rooms that have balconies face a street where there is music playing until well after 11pm (not good for early risers or light sleepers). And for those in the balcony room on the 3rd floor, beware that you are directly below the breakfast area, and unless you are a heavy sleeper, will be woken up by the aunt chopping fruits and vegetables at 6am. These are the things to be aware of, but none of them are inherently bad.
Now for things that are probably almost always bad: Musty smell in the rooms due to being too humid and not getting proper ventilation. Single-pane windows that are very poor sound insulators.
I appreciate this place a lot and look forward to coming back in a couple years to see what improvements...
Read moreGreat stay at The Purple Hue!
The couple who run the hotel are absolutely lovely. Both are from Hue and are happy to share recommendations beyond the usual that you receive upon checking in (that guide itself is a great start!) The hotel is in a great central location to spend a few days exploring the city. You can walk or bike to the citadel by day and enjoy the beer street in the evening without having to drive.
Delicious breakfasts! Having homemade local dishes that changed daily was a very nice touch and a welcome break from the pancakes or instant noodles that are standard many places.
Binh and Tinh also have a craft beer cafe (The Cham) on the first floor with a selection of Vietnamese beer, cider, gin and rum which was great to arrive to after a long day on a motorbike!
I had originally booked four nights but wanted more time to explore the city but the prices had gone up quite a bit online. The staff were kind enough to extend my stay at the same price as I’d paid previously. The first room I had booked did not have a window which is fine for a short stay but I ended up staying for nine(!) nights. When I inquired about changing rooms I was moved to a higher floor with not just a window but a balcony when one became available. Very generous!
Oh, as had been mentioned in other reviews, the beds and pillows are super comfy!! This is such a rarity traveling in Vietnam that it was extra luxurious!
Binh and Tinh genuinely enjoy running the Purple Hue and it’s obvious in every interaction. They were always happy to help or just have a chat and in regards to hotel amenities if they can do something to make your stay...
Read moreWhen I come back to Hue, I would love to stay again. The staff were so friendly - we had the warmest welcome after a long trip from Ninh Binh, and they will share with you a Google Map with great places to visit pinned there. The bar is modern and has some really interesting Vietnamese beers, cider, and spirits, and it got nicely busy in the evening of people coming for a drink - it was a great spot! The rooms are simple and have everything you need, especially for a short stay. We had a lovely balcony which was great to watch the rain. Some other reviews complain about the street and school noise, or music from the bar downstairs - you are staying right in the city with so many things around - you will have this kind of noise! If you want more peace, there are lots of hotels where you will be away from that noise. If you stay here you choose somewhere with a vibey bar downstairs so of course there will be noise there too.
Thank you to the wonderful staff who helped us do some laundry as it was halfway through our trip (make sure you separate your white and colour because we didn’t and a shirt got ruined, but that’s on us!!), and the friendly manager lady who helped us get dressed for the pouring rain and gave us umbrellas, and organised our onward travel to Hoi An at the...
