My mum and I discovered this shop at the Brisbane French Festival a few years back (I think 2016?) and have been loyal customers ever since. We love their cheeses, especially the Cremeux de Bourgogne is one of my favourites. We usually also buy Raclette cheese, as most of the times when we do a cheese order it’s because we have planned a raclette. In the last almost decade of buying cheese here, I have never had a problem with the quality of the products or the customer service, until now. Last month I put in an order for the usual as we had guests from France staying with us (one of them is a chef in high end fancy restaurants by the way) and they wanted to do a Raclette. I think I ate one slice of cheese and could not continue; the taste was way too strong and bitey, the inside of the rind area of the cheese was quite dark compared to the rest of it, it was in fact inedible. My guests (from France, and a chef) also agreed that Raclette cheese should NEVER be allowed to age this much and they also were unable to eat too much of it; they did not enjoy it either (you know you have a problem when French people aren’t enjoying eating cheese). Seeing as the cheese I had paid so much for was a disappointment and was likely going to be fed to the chickens, I decided to email the shop to request a refund for the Raclette cheese. I mean it happens that a product has aged unfavourably and they might not have known it was inedible and you know, mistakes happen that’s ok. Up until this point I was fine with the whole process, but it's the phone call from the owner that made me decide to write this review. I felt like he was trying, rather arrogantly, to mansplain to me that cheeses can be strong and that tastes vary from person to person, and that maybe I just don’t like strong flavoured cheese (it’s true I don’t). I felt like he wasn’t listening to me and my concerns, but rather preferred to justify himself in order to get out of refunding me. If I was someone who had never had raclette cheese in my life, he probably would have managed to convince me that I was wrong and chose the wrong cheese, but unfortunately he picked the wrong person to pick on as I grew up in France and have NEVER in my 12 years living there (plus 20 years having Raclettes here), had a Raclette cheese that tasted like this. I tried to explain that the fact that my guests complained means something, and they should know a thing or two about Raclette cheese, but he brushed that off as meaningless. The moment I told him I was also French and have years of experience eating Raclette and have never eaten one like this, he seemed to flip and settled for the refund. It disappoints me to see how customer un-friendly he was being, trying to make me believe it’s my tastes that are the problem, to finally begrudgedly offering the refund when he saw I wasn’t backing down on this one. I am unsure if I will order from them again...
