Urban Spence — Local services in Brisbane City

I had a really disappointing and concerning experience at Urban Spence. I purchased a $4 milk drink that had a use by date of 21 SEP, but I bought it on 22 SEP. A use by date means the product is unsafe to consume after that day, as bacteria can build up and potentially make someone very sick—or worse.

When I brought this up, the lady working there was extremely rude and refused to give me a refund or even an exchange. I had to raise my voice before another staff member finally stepped in and gave me a full refund.

Selling products past their use by date is not only unacceptable but also dangerous to customers’ health. I won’t be coming back, and I hope the store takes this seriously so no one else ends up in the same situation.

Thank you for your response, but I think there may be some confusion here. A “use by” date is a legal food safety standard , products cannot be sold after this date, even at a reduced price, because they are unsafe to consume. This is very different from a “best before” date, which is about quality rather than safety.

When I raised this in store, the issue wasn’t about whether the product was on special, it was that it should not have been on the shelf at all. I only pushed for a refund after being treated rudely, which made the situation worse.

I had such bad experience at the store, they have some attractive stands at the entrance but trust me on this never purchase anything from that stand. They have products expired about years and months ago. I wonder if its even legal in Australia to sell expired products at low price. Also the owners are extremely rude, the lady at the counter was so disrespectful to the customer who did not have enough to pay for the products she purchased. Felt unwelcome by workers. Had rude experiences (almost always at check out). Felt is judged in the store (mostly regarding to my appearance). Treated as bellow them and not as an equal. Prices are ridiculous. Noticeable increases in most bought items. Unnecessary attitude.
