Back in the day my brothers and I would go to Jim's old store on Lumley Street, we still have such memories of big Jim, ever the hard worker and a family man. It was a sad day for our young lives when the store changed hands and the chips were never the same.
We moved away from the Southside but no other chippy was the same (look, Tipplers in Taringa is second but it's not that close).
Driving down in the Southside to my partners house, I noticed a mural that says Big Jim's takeaway with an unforgettable face.
I walked in and was greeted by a young man with excellent service skills, instantly realising this was one of the kids I'd see regularly at the old shop. I ordered my food and waited and picked it up and then asked if the old man was still in the business.
He tells me to wait a sec and he brings out Jim. I hadn't seen the man in 15 years, we both look so different yet it's him.
The chips. Taste exactly like my childhood. You know that part in Ratatouille? Yeah literally that with chips.
Big Jim and your wonderful family, thank you being a source of treasured memories for us. My business is...
Read moreBig Jim's Takeaway, in Holland Park, is one of those things that just continues to surprise me about life on the South Side. There was a time, a bloke would go to a barber to get a haircut and spend a bit of time chatting-just blokes being blokes. In the middle of cooking all Australian sourced fish and chips, Jim is able to recreate that time where you just stop and chat, while either he or his wife or one of their multitude of children prepare your meals. I particularly enjoyed the creamed rice, and there was enough for both my wife and I to have a small amount in keeping with our diets. Jim takes phone bookings if you are in a hurry, but if you are a bloke running out to grab a meal for the family, I would say turn up there place your order and enjoy a chat. I'm yet to find any power on earth which will stop Jim from chatting. Also, if you agree with me I'd recommend...
Read moreI saw a random YouTube review by some American dude. He had Barramundi and chips. The chips looked amazing so I had to try. So today I got the Barra and chips. I live about a 20min drive away. I decided to go home to eat. I decided to have just a few chips to see whet they were like. Perfect! Crispy and crunchy on the outside but soft on the inside. I then thought i'd just try a little barra to see what that was like. I got it battered. The batter was light and not overly oily and the barra was so fresh. Apparently the owner goes to the fish market everyday to get fresh fish...So I was gonna take a few photos when I got home but it was so damn good I ate it all in the car on the drive home....
