I visited St Kilda Cellars in August 2024 to catch some local comedy in their cosy backroom venue. We drove and parked in an alley behind the main street, though the venue’s easily accessible by tram, with stops nearby. It was a lively Friday night in St Kilda, the streets were buzzing with people heading out, and we also saw several locals experiencing homelessness along the strip. Everyone was kind, and there was a lovely bit of conversation between some of them and the patrons outside the venue.
The venue itself is easy to spot with a small outdoor seating area and a distinctive arched brick exterior that gives it real character. Inside, you’ll find a well stocked bottle shop with an impressive selection of wine, spirits, and beer, available to enjoy on site or take home. There’s also a bar and a few small tables, perfect for tastings or relaxed drinks with friends. It’s a versatile spot that could easily serve as the start to a great night out.
Out the back, there’s a small performance space with a stage, toilets, and bench seating for the audience. This was where Comedy in the Cellar took place, a free comedy night showcasing around 25 comedians doing 5–10 minute sets each, hosted by an MC. It ran from about 8pm to 11pm and featured a wide range of performers, so there really was something for everyone. I loved the way the venue supports local talent and gives newer comedians a platform, it made for a night full of laughter and community spirit.
After the show, many of the comedians usually hang around to chat, grab a drink, or mingle with the audience in the front bar. On this night, people cleared out fairly quickly as the venue was closing and many were heading off to other nightlife spots, but the energy was still warm and vibrant. The owners were incredibly kind and welcoming, checking in with guests and thanking both the performers and the crowd.
I really love this venue, from the charming brick architecture to the community focused energy it brings. Whether you’re popping in for a bottle, staying for a drink, or checking out one of their events, St Kilda Cellars is a gem in Melbourne’s live arts and hospitality scene. It’s places like this that keep the city’s creative heartbeat going. You can order their drinks online too, but if you’re nearby, don’t miss the chance to pop in and...
Read moreIf anyone is thinking about ordering their take away margaritas, I would think twice. I paid $14each for 2 through Uber eats as we were trying to have a fun day during the lockdown and couldn't physically go anywhere. They are supposed to be 325ml cups pre mixed. We received 2 cups with less that 150ml each but were charged full price. I even asked the Uber driver where the rest of the drinks were and he agreed they were empty. When I tried to contact them about this, their phone number is disconnected and they haven't updated their details. So no way to get my money back which is a terrible shame. So disappointed that they chose to rip me off even after all the recent bad news....
Read moreCame for a little bit of eaves dropping of the comedy night, 110% jokes were actually really funny. sounded like he had a tough crowd thought tonight! Came in for a drink upon recommendation from one of our past local bartenders. Charlie provided us with excellent service and was very welcoming to us, even recognised us from his previous work (Prince Alfred). Very clearly retained all his knowledge from their with knowledge of the craft beers in stock and which to try (even though we went for the st kilda draught and cocktails🙈). Beautiful venue, Big shout out to charlie again for the service. Definitely recommend checking...
