A Footscray artist has been charged by Victoria Police over child images exhibited at Linden Gallery, St Kilda, earlier this year (The Sunday Age, 08 Sep 13, Page 3). If convicted will the Board of Management of the Linden Gallery, and those who put the exhibition together be liable too? The chairwoman is related to a local ALP MP who has been supportive (sometimes hysterically) of the gallery during the police investigation.
According to The Sunday Age today (13 Oct 13) some staff and some on the board are now at each others throats in a nasty power fight. It is time for the Port Phillip Council to cease funding the Linden Gallery. Also are ratepayers granted to the Linden earlier this year for the art going to be misused in any legal issues concerning the child images exhibition or any internal factional fighting?
UPDATE: In July 14 the 2013 annual report was finally published online and the chairwoman has been replaced as Chairman of the Board. In 2013 the Linden had a $91,000 deficit ($31,000 in 2012 too) despite all the council, government and private funding and staff wages increased in 2013 by about $100,000 too. This can not continue.
The Footscray artists court case in now scheduled for 3 days from 18 Aug 14 at the Melbourne Magistrates Court.
UPDATE: On 06 Sep 17 Port Phillip Council voted to pour a further $1.5 million of our rates for yet another upgrade to this old mansion. A better option would be not to renew the least (no rent paid) and sell the building.
Port Phillip Town Hall (St Kilda) 1 km away has a better and larger art gallery near the foyers so...
