"THE BEST KEBABS IN MELBOURNE", or so their little LED sign out the front says. But are they actually the best kebabs in Melbourne?
The Service: The staff behind the counter were polite enough, both myself and my partners kebabs were made in a timely manner, I think we waited maybe 10 minutes at the absolute most. So no issues here.
The Price: $11 for a standard kebab with a lot, $1 per extra, so my kebab with a lot including olives and cheese was $13. Probably middle of the row in terms of prices, there are definitely cheaper kebab shops in Hoppers, but there are also definitely far more expensive ones as well. So price here wasn't an issue.
The Kebab: This is obviously where the review starts to get interesting. The kebab was, actually pretty damn good. It was wrapped competently, It's construction and layering was near perfect, the person making my kebab had clearly taken their time to layer the ingredients out on the wrap instead of just plopping everything down like most people do. Overall I would say that it was probably one of the best constructed kebabs I have ever had.
Probably a little bit under toasted for my liking, but that's just nitpicking.
The ingredients tasted fresh, nice fresh tasting lettuce with zesty onion. The chicken in my kebab had a nice flavour to it without being overly present. The wrap was nice, just a plain simple wrap, none of that fancy overdone Turkish bread stuff that you see a lot of kebab places using nowadays. In terms of ingredients, the only disappointing aspect was the amount of olives and cheese I got. About half a handful of each, which if you're charging $1 per extra, maybe isn't enough. There was enough there not to actually complain, but I would have liked a bit more.
That, and the garlic sauce. This was probably the most disappointing aspect of the kebab, and largely the reason why I've given them four stars instead of five.
The garlic sauce was absolutely tasteless, at no point throughout the 10 or so minutes it took me to eat the kebab did I once taste anything that resembled proper garlic sauce. There were definitely bites in where I could taste they had put some assemblance of something representing garlic sauce in it, but it tasted that watered down that it would have actually probably tasted better without it. I've said it a lot in my previous reviews, and I'll say it again now. Garlic sauce can make or break a kebab, and this was an absolutely perfect example of that. An otherwise very tasty kebab brought down by subpar garlic sauce. Such a shame.
So, the big question, is Star Kebabs "the best kebabs in Melbourne" as their LED sign seems to suggest? No, no they're not. In fact I wouldn't even say they are the best kebabs on old Geelong Road. But, what I will say, they're pretty good. Definitely worth trying, and hey, it all comes down to individual tastes. But for my liking, the garlic sauce just...
Read moreOrdered a large hsp where the meat was served cold or just barely warm where the cheese wasn’t even melting so I asked to take it back to warm it up but they offered to remake it and there would be a 5 minute wait. 5-10 mins later more customers were arriving and getting their food so I had my partner go up and check on our order which turned out it was never being remade 5-10 mins ago until I had my partner go up to ask about it which annoyed me as we were sitting waiting for nothing while me also being pregnant. The first time they served our order, my first bite was disappointing as this used to be our local fav spot & every good meal is nostalgic but this was not it unfortunately but I could tell they have gone downhill, lamb pieces weren’t even grilled after being shaved to make it hot and more flavourful. Making sure I wasn’t being picky, I picked up the meat and it wasn’t hot barely warm to the touch which made me send it back so them having us waste our time waiting esp me being pregnant for our remake order ended us leaving with a refund and trying a different amazing Kebab joint. All we got was a insincere apology with a weird face from the girl servers. Very...
Read moreBeen going here since it was a tiny caravan. Wow has it gone down hill. Staff are deplorable. Very sour faced large Turkish woman who professes to be the owner started screeching at me because I called her out on recooking cold chips. Told me she didn't but later confessed. The proof is in the photos. Soggy, burnt and cold. Very obvious. Not to mention I watched her cook an entire bag then tip them in a bowl and put them in the fridge. Easier to get people in and out faster. Screaming out order numbers and slamming windows. Young blonde girl had acrylic nails which are a massive no no in food preparation areas $40 for the worst customer service EVER and substandard food. The kebabs had zero meat in them and were burnt. I will post this review everywhere I can and I'll be calling the health department. Focus more on your customers at the window rather than menulog and uber eats. Stop thinking about how much money you can make and protect your brand. Star Kebabs? Bad kebabs more like it....
