I like East Village Shopping Centre because it’s wheelchair accessible, has basics like a chemist, Coles, butcher and greengrocer, but also has cafes. Our next closest is Broadway Shopping Centre and it’s harder to get to and spread out over 4 stories making it exhausting to get around and grab the basics, especially as I am in a wheelchair.
There’s decent quality here and I can get gluten free or specialist items from The Source Bulk Foods or Taste Growers Market. Even the Coles here has a large Gluten free section, health foods etc.
There’s not really a food court as such, but there’s some tables and chairs. The Fish monger has wonderful offerings and also do excellent fish and chips. (Better than some restaurants I had been too.) There’s a sushi place too and I shall try it sometime.
Bowen Island cafe has great coffee, hot chocolate and cakes. There’s not much on offer though for gluten free like me. Skip the friand, overly sweet and not much flavour. I haven’t tried the other cafes and restaurants yet, but I plan to.
Downstairs to the left of the lifts is a big pet store which is easy to access. We now pop in here to get our bunnies their hay, treats and litter.

Read moreMy wife and larger family of mine including grandchildren love East Village and visit the centre at least three times a week. I am however appalled at the lack of disrespect by drivers who use the car park and drive at speeds higher than the speed limit within the car park. Furthermore the total disrespect of such drivers for ONE WAY AND NO RIGHT HAND TURN SIGNS is truly frightening. I experienced a mother with her baby in a pram almost run over by an irresponsible driver in an expensive SUV who almost run them over because he/she ignored the NO RIGHT TURN SIGN and was driving at a speed which is prohibited in a car park. I noticed security officers often turn a blind eye to this total disrespect by driver and are often seen in the retail area rather than policing these bad drivers in the car park who are often arrogant and knowingly disobey the entry rules to the car park. Is management of the Centre waiting for a serious accident to happen or even a fatality before implementing and effectively...
