Edit: bbq fish, swordfish burrito, and tuna cheeseburger are where it's at. They are all amazing and hopefully fish and chips are going to be imptoved next time I try. I like trying new things and fish butchery is an exciting modern take on seafood. The store is filled with great vibes and quality seafood. I tried their fish and chip, bbq fennel, and bbq tomato. The food was overall pretty good. I commend the store for trying to make things as best as possible using premium ingredients. In terms of execution, though, they are still missing some marks. Overall I encourage people to try this place as I believe they truly believe in good food and any criticism I'm going to lay out here isn't something they can't amend. Also the customer setvice is stellar - when I complained about the chips, they promptly make a new improved one for me.
Fish and Chips Fish was light as crispy (actually lightest and crispiest I've ever had). The chips were also crispy but not light and mash-like in the middle. Both the fish and chips were a shade too dark and a touch bitter. This was probably due to the oil being too hot or they were fried for too long. The amount of tartare sauce given relative to the amount of food is also tiny. When I request for more I'm expected to pay an additional $3 on top of an already exorbitant price of $28 for fish and chips. **A little tip for the team here: I suspect you guys double/triple cook your fries and that is great. But doing this comes with risk of drying out chips. Maybe try cutting chips in a larger size so there is more cobtrast between soft interior and crispy exterior!
Bbq fennel For cooked fennel I'd expect it to be a touch softer (still with crunch) but this bbq fennel is still quite hard. Alhough, I can't deny it has a good flavour and char, pairing it with an already slightly bitter fish and chips is a bit overbearing.
Bbq tomatoes Love this one! It's sweet and sour with some saltiness and brininess from capers and smoothness from olive oil. This is a...
Read moreThis place is a win. They use every part of the fish to create a myriad of wonderful and complex yet simple dishes. There is a lot of food that anyone can enjoy, even if seafood isn’t your thing, which would be sad. That’s your own fault. Seafood is the best.
The tuna burger (10/10) is ridiculously good. Like it makes you see colours when you close your eyes. Like a classic hearty American style burger that goes down perfectly with their perfectly crisp hand cut chips. Oh yeah and you can also get a SALT & VINEGAR ONION RING IN IT so what more could you ask of life?
Honourable mention to their Tuna lasagne (9/10) which was one of the best lasagnes I’ve ever had, and is so convenient to take home and cook for yourself. And who can bothered to cook lasagne? No one. So buy it instead.
Obviously their fish & chips (11/10) are what they’re known for , and they absolutely excel at these. Hands down best fish and chips I’ve ever eaten in the world. Even better than the famous chippies through London and the UK. The batter makes you feel like you’ve been wrapped in cotton wool and you’re just bouncing along in a field with zero gravity.
Prawn hotdog (1/10) was bad. Like really weirdly bad… maybe not everything should be made into a hotdog? Maybe a hotdog is just the one thing you don’t want tasting like crumbly old fish…
Anyway other than the prawn hotdog (which might come back to haunt my dreams one day), everything was ridiculously delicious.
Would eat here over and over again. Service...
Read moreAfter a few visits to Fish Butchery Paddington we no longer go there as we found their standard inconsistent. Fish & chips with overcooked burnt batter, often too dark & bitter. Way too oily and too salty! Where’s the quality they promised!?
Our friend lives near Fish Butchery Waterloo. He raved about the freshness of their fish and loved their Grilled Flounder. So we gave it a try.
The Fish & Chips tasted great especially the Sebago hand cut chips - they were almost perfect! But the fish was slightly overcooked and less than perfect. The colour was a shade or two too dark but at least the batter wasn’t burnt or too oily.
The Grilled Calamari tasted great too but I didn’t like the texture as they were thick, chewy and rubbery. The size of calamari was too big and too thick! They were also way too hard to cut with the hideous disposable wooden fork & knife. I wish they used smaller calamari which would be a lot tender and tasted super tender. I guess in a masterful hand big and thick calamari could be wonderful too but I haven’t had one that I like yet and I love calamari.
We thought the Fish & chips and calamari were reasonably priced for such quality produce but they need a better cook. What really gave us a shock was the price of their drinks. A tiny bottle of Kimino Ume - 250 ml for $9! Strangelove Double Ginger Beer Lo-Cal Soda 300 ml $6. I should have asked how much they cost before I ordered them at the counter....
