Hamilton Decorating Centre — Local services in Hamilton

Extremely poor customer service here, and this store does not have a manager as I am told by the employee there. I spent about $200 at this store recently and highly regret this choice. I do not expect staff members to be professional contract workers, but if I am paying steep prices I do expect a level of knowledge above my own.

1. First we were told that we cannot use an electric sander on a deck and that we would need to use a hand sander. So we spent about $40 on sandpaper and a sander head since they did not have small boxes of sandpaper in stock. I spent about 3hrs on one piece of wood - this removed very little paint if any at all.
2. Then we were told if we used paint stripper we would need to also purchase neutralizer. After about 3hrs of sanding, I gave up and decided to call the store to ask about pricing for the stripper. The employee then told me I didn't need neutralizer for the other brand. After spending $150 a few hours prior, I am then told I cannot use my credit card for under $20 purchases. I am sorry - you are part of a franchise! You are not a mom-and-pop shop.
3. Was sold the wrong stain for our deck and when we called the store, the same lady blamed us and said there was nothing that could be done.
4. After calling head office, it is apparent I was also supposed to have received a paint scrapper. Obviously that is not a huge deal, but these constant little mistakes make it extremely frustrating, especially since I opt to put my money in a store that has steep prices expecting quality in return.

I’ve made three $100+ purchases here over the last six months and the service is often pretty unpleasant. Today was the most frustrating: they started ringing through a more expensive primer without telling me there was a cheaper option, and began mixing a paint colour without asking me about my finish and price point. When I asked them what my options were, I was told, “Well she already mixed it!” when I hadn’t even decided yet.

Fortunately I ended up buying the paint, but I walked out feeling taken advantage of. I was the only customer in the store, there were two staff members there, and I was prepared with the products and the colour I wanted. There’s no reason why I should have felt like such an inconvenience.

On one occasion I had a really nice experience when a staff member took time to help me pick out a colour to match a tile sample that I brought, but otherwise I’ve left feeling frustrated and kind of bummed out. Honestly you can buy paint and get helpful advice from lots of places, so we won’t come here any more.

I've been here many times with my brother. Sometimes on my own. My brother and I have been buying a can of paint or paints, brushes, paint tape, plastic tray with liners and putty knife, etc. The staff that served us were very nice and helpful. They do accept cash, credit, and debit. Most of our items are expensive and good quality.

It is a small store, and it's located at the corner of Campbell and Ottawa Street North downtown of Hamilton. The name of the store is called Benjamin Moore above the front door facing Ottawa Street. They do have a few free parking spots at the back of the store next to the wall. For customers only. We can get in the back red door into the store.
