Cannon Coffee is a creative little coffee shop in a rapidly gentrifying part of Hamilton. We were passing through Hamilton on our way south and wanted to try an up-and-coming place for breakfast. The restaurant was about 15 minutes of the highway but turned out to be well worth the detour.
Cannon Coffee is a tiny café, with a row of tables lined up on the opposite end of the kitchen/prep area. They high ceilings, light floors and light walls do a good job distracting you from the lack of space. Cannon Coffee looks brighter bigger and more spacious than it actually is.
There are two people behind the counter. If you order a coffee, they will call you up to the side when its ready (like most coffee shops). If you order a meal, they will bring it to your table.
I ordered a double espresso and a "Canadian Brunch" which is comprised of a loaded waffle.
The coffee had a rich flavor but was a bit acidic for my palate. I do appreciate that this was a quality cup of coffee even if it wasn't my cup of coffee (so to speak). My wife had an americano and loved it.
On to the waffle, and my main reason for putting Cannon Coffee on my map of where to stop next time you are in the neighborhood. The waffle was absolutely fantastic. They mixed pieces of apple into the waffle batter, sprinkled cheddar cheese on top along with two poached eggs and two strips of crisp maple bacon.
The waffle had an excellent apple-to-batter ratio and you could taste apple in every bite. The thick strips of bacon were crisped to perfection and had none of the chewiness of fattiness you would expect. There was just the right amount of melted cheder cheese on top.
The sweetness of the waffle perfectly complimented the saltiness of the cheese and bacon while the eggs enhanced the rich flavor of the meal. They also served real maple syrup, which is a big...
Read moreI recently visited The Cannon and was blown away by the quality of their coffee and food. I have to give them a 5 out of 5 stars review for their exceptional service, delicious coffee, and excellent range of dietary options.
The first thing I noticed was the variety of options available to suit different dietary requirements. As a vegetarian, I was pleased to see that they had several vegetarian and vegan options on the menu, including plant-based milk options. They even had gluten-free options for those with gluten sensitivities.
The cappuccino at The Cannon is hands down the best I've ever had. The baristas are incredibly skilled and know how to create the perfect balance of espresso and milk foam. I always order mine with soy milk, and it never disappoints.
Aside from their coffee, they also have a fantastic selection of baked goods that pair perfectly with their drinks. Their pastries are freshly baked and deliciously sweet.
One suggestion I have is to consider creating a designated workspace for those who come to work or study. The coffee shop is often bustling with people on weekends, and it can be challenging to find a space to sit down and eat comfortably. By setting up a section of the cafe specifically for this purpose, perhaps with smaller tables or a communal bench, it would free up other tables for customers who are only there for a coffee or bite to eat.
Overall, The Cannon is an exceptional coffee place that caters to all dietary needs and serves some of the best coffee I've ever tasted. I highly recommend giving them a try if you're looking for a quality coffee...
Read moreWhat an experience! I went in with high expectations but was blown away even so.
First of all, the most amazing people work here. Everyone was so kind and welcoming, which is something I especially notice and appreciate now as a hijabi, that we felt like celebrities. They were that incredible. I would come back alone for such a warm and cozy feel. They had a little cubby of books for kids that quickly became very popular with my kids. No amount of flying napkins and food or loud noises phased the staff here.
The coffee: We walked away with a jar of coffee beans. The caps we got were creamy, frothy and something magical. You'll find coffee for this price but you won't find coffee like this for this price. 10/10 I want to come back and honour the rest of the coffee menu here.
The food: I wasn't ready for this. Ordered the Harvest Brunch. Imagine you are sitting in PEI on a warm summer day and right outside your window, you see the rolling hills of farms where your food was harvested. Your greens are lush and crunchy, the sweet potatoes and zucchini freshly steamed soft and flavourful and your peppers crunchy and sweet. The waffle was crisp with some sauce that was DIVINE! Eggs were soft and delicious. I wanted to share, but I could not. It was unbelievably delicious and the freshness was out of this world.
I snuck bites of the sweet waffle from the kids plate and it was equally delicious.
I would drive here from an hour away easily for food this level.
I can't wait to come back. And bring everyone else who appreciates food as I do to be delighted...
