Sad to say this, however the mall's time has come and gone I'm afraid. Owner defaulted on his mortgage, so the entire place is in limbo and facing an uncertain future at this point. Nobody knows for sure just what's happening with the joint. Whatever one's opinion, suffice to say that it's never going to return to what it once was. The 'Glory Days' when CK happened to be a thriving community with plenty of industry to support it, are also just a fading memory.
Tired, worn out, not accessible as escalators and elevators have been out of order for over a year now, just downright decrepit. Even the AC didn't work this past summer. Literally just 5 stores left. T's and Sweats is leaving soon, too. Windows all smashed in outside the old Sears along Fifth Street, while the immediate area has a general run down feeling to it. The 'wonderful' condo building smack dab across the street has now been under construction for over a decade with a barrage of excuses as to the reason why it hasn't been completed yet...
This town is on its last legs, economically speaking. It's becoming a retirement community full of rich snobs and greedy investors fleeing the GTA who have been coming down here to artificially prop up the local real estate market to unsustainable levels, but that's a whole other topic...
I'm glad to be moving out and moving on soon. Such a shame. Was a vibrant place at one time (so was Chatham in general), but those days are finito.
Would the last person out please turn off the lights and lock the doors... Goodbye, Farewell, and Thanks for the...
Read moreFormer Downtown Chatham Centre. Now One Hundered King is on the verge of something amazing. While the variety of stores is still growing, there are big plans already underway for a brand-new food court, new retailers, and even potential restaurants. This kind of investment is absolutely incredible for Chatham and shows real commitment to the community. Huge congratulations to the four investors who are driving this project forward for the people of Chatham, exciting times ahead! The stores that are currently here (Hart store, dollararma, Charm etc) are great and the staff and managers are amazing. Lynn the manager here is making great changes for the mall and I'm exctied to see the place...
Read moreIf you've ever dealt with anyone from the administration office, you will immediately understand why the mall is 75% empty. It is most unfortunate for surrounding places like Retro Suites - being profitable must be a real challenge for them considering their guests have to look at a parking lot in such disrepair or try to go shopping in the "mall" itself. We're playing real fast and loose with the term "mall." I can't imagine how anyone who has purchased in that eventual condominium building must feel. I would be embarrassed to operate the Downtown Chatham Centre the way they do, but we all have our...
