Fresh Value — Local services in Toronto

UPDATE FEB. 5, 2025: Given the threatened 25% tariffs from the United States, I have a new appreciation for the Fresh Value supermarket offering such a wide variety of products from around the world. It's time for me to get out of food ruts in buying so many American foods and for me to explore more Canadian and international foods, such as what is being offered daily at Fresh Value. Much appreciated, Fresh Value Rexdale! I also love the daily buffet of amazing cooked foods to buy as takeout.

PREVIOUSLY: Many, many times over the years, I've shopped at Fresh Value, wandering around the aisles in this good-sized supermarket and being fascinated with the huge variety of ethnic produce and products. It is so interesting! Plus, there are regular brands that you would expect to find in a Toronto supermarket.

Of course, I've made purchases too but I really enjoy just walking around and looking at all of the items that you wouldn't normally see at a regular supermarket or at Walmart Supercentre on the far opposite side of this Rexdale Mall.

The takeout food items are quite tasty and reasonably priced, e.g. a lunch special. My touchy tummy can't handle their cooked rice which possibly contains MSG but I've never heard of anyone else making any complaints about any of the food from Fresh Value.

The staff have been pleasant enough when I've needed to talk to them, e.g. recently when I enquired about a certain tropic fruit. There is a grouchy female security guard at the front entrance who demands that you leave your bags there, e.g. if you'd shopped elsewhere before entering this store. If I had to be responsible for security in a store this size, I'd be grouchy, too.

I recommend that you go into this store, even just to check it out, and you might end up with some delightful...

Fresh Value has advertised whole halal chicken for 1.77/ lb on their May 23 to May 29 flyer. Today, when I went to Fresh Value today to pick up some chicken,I saw the sign at the counter for $2.77/lb. So I asked at the meat counter, they said, they sold it for 1.77 yesterday until at closing time someone realized there was an error so they are not selling it at 1.77 anymore. So asked them why no sign posted. They said to talk to customer service. I went and spoke to a lady with very short hair. I can bet my life on it that the lady never received any training on how to talk to a customer. She just told me that those are sold out. When I reiterated that it is advertised , does not say where while quantities last, no sign posted for any errors, she started shouting and told another lady to run and post a generic sign saying they reserve the right to limit quantities but nothing about the chicken. I bought chicken weighs 23.22 lbs paying $64.31. This would have been $41.09 at $1.77/lbs. I paid 23.22 extra!! This was totally a wrong business practice. Customers must not be inconvenienced for the error fresh value has made. Without being apologetic, they showed total disrespect to me. I asked to speak to a supervisor/ manager, the lady said manager do not work so Sunday's. How can a business run with out a supervisor on duty? They have tons of cc cameras, the manager can review the footage to validate. I will call the manager tomorrow and...

BUYERS BEWARE! This store discriminates against people wth disabilities. I live across the street and have been shopping here for years. Twice a week I come in with my empty shopping cart and place it in the little basket cart and do my shopping. Today, however, I was told that I wasn't allowed to because "that's how people steal things". After 5 years of shopping here? Are they serious? You can certainly tell the difference between a closed and folded bag versus one that's been loaded with something. And I had to leave it at some register I wasn't planning on using. I was going to do what is for one person a fairly large shop. I walked out with just the bare necessities and will go to Walmart from now on. I was almost forced to get bags that I didn't want because I wasn't allowed to bring my EMPTY CART to the register I was checking out at. These people are backwards and I won't continue to fund a store that treats regulars as if we shoplift. Never have I EVER. Also, terrible service and they should get a visit form the health inspectors. Today the floors were a mess, it was hard to maneuver through the aisles, which just added insult to injury.
