Oh, heavens to Betsy! You won't believe what happened to my sweet husband and me on our special trip to Granville Island. We'd been looking forward to it since our last visit over 20 years ago, picturing a lovely day, but it turned into such a sour memory, all thanks to a rather pushy young man with dark curly hair.
We were just strolling along, minding our own business and looking at all those beautiful edibles arts, when this young fellow with dark, curly hair practically jumped out at us, offering a sample of something he called "double butter toffee." Well, it was alright, I suppose, but good gracious, it was so sticky! It felt like it was trying to glue my teeth right out of my head.
Despite the fact it was just "fine," this boy just wouldn't quit! He kept on and on, practically twisting my arm to buy a bag for $23 Canadian. Now, it was our 50th wedding anniversary, bless our hearts, and I just wanted everyone to be happy, so I thought, "Alright, dear, let's support a local business." I pulled out a $50 US bill to pay, thinking nothing of it. Can you believe it? He took that money without a peep, not a single word about the exchange rate! He just brazenly decided it was worth the same as Canadian money! Why, that's practically stealing, plain and simple! Everyone knows a US dollar is worth more than a Canadian one these days, almost $1.40! We were robbed in broad daylight, I tell you. And if that wasn't bad enough, the change he gave back was a measly $21.70 Canadian. Even if you go by his ridiculous, made-up rate, we should've gotten at least $27 back! He didn't even give us a receipt! It truly felt like he planned the whole thing, not just a silly mistake.
When we went back to talk to him, hoping he'd see the error of his ways, his attitude was as rotten as that sticky toffee. He just gave us this cold, blank stare and said, "Transaction finished, nothing I could do." Not even a "sorry," or an offer to make it right. Just pure, unadulterated rudeness! This wasn't some little mix-up; it was a calculated scam. That young man's dishonesty and his utterly appalling manners put a dark cloud over what should have been a joyful 50th Anniversary. It truly breaks my heart to see such a lovely place like Granville Island harboring this kind of outright trickery.
I have now read the owner's response, and it does nothing to ease the sour taste this experience left. In fact, it only strengthens my conviction that this business simply does not care!
The owner speaks of "clearly posted policies," yet my husband and I saw no such sign. There was nothing on display about a 1-to-1 exchange rate, and the employee certainly didn't feel it was important to warn us before taking a $50 US bill for a $23 Canadian item. Hiding behind a supposed policy that was invisible to the customer is not accountability.
This response is a masterclass in deflection. It sidesteps the rudeness of the employee and the fact we were given the wrong change even by their own math. It seems they care more about winning an argument online than they do about an elderly couple who were treated unfairly on their 50th anniversary. It’s...
Read moreSuper friendly owner, and absolutely delicious toffee! We discovered this brand at our local market recently and decided to try 3 flavours: lavender, raspberry sea salt and spicy cranberry. Our favourite was hands down the raspberry sea salt, but the spicy cranberry had a really nice cranberry flavour then a nice little kick at the end. Haven’t had the chance to try the lavender yet but...
Read moreAs someone who isn’t typically a toffee fan, I really enjoy Toffee Pop! This toffee isn’t too sticky / crunchy it’s more of a tasteful vessel for the gourmet flavours. My favourite flavours so far have been the lemon lavender and rosemary cardamom. It’s becoming one of my go-to gifts, especially for foodie types. Such a great price point for such a carefully crafted and...
