[2016.10.15] I went to the Marpole Oakridge Community Centre for a friend's baby shower that we helped to put together. We rented the "Social Room" for about 4 hours. The space itself was decently sized for what was advertised with a capacity of 30. All groups are responsible for their own set-up and take-down which is fine, however, there are a lot of restrictions. The use of any clear tape is not allowed, no music and no confetti of any sort even if you are willing to clean up even though this is a venue advertised for hosting birthday parties and special occasions. On a lighter note, the staff are friendly and there are a lot of supplies available for any sort of prep work like whiteboards, markers/dry-eraser, scissors, tables of varying heights/sizes, and depending on the room; a sink and small freezer. Overall, for people interested in renting a space there for events, definitely ask for all the rules before putting...
Read moreA two points because at least it has washrooms but this park is in a nice neighborhood right off from Oak Street and it's not well maintained at all! The waterpark is a dangerous hazzard for kids. I always hear a kid crying from bloody knees. The water gets clogged and dirty and that is where the little ones are playing. This park is spacious and has so much potential if only someone in the city cared and would renovate it and make it kid safe and actually fun. They also have three little bridges for playing but at the end of each side there's a concrete stop I guess to keep bikes or skateboards away but the kids also crash into these. Please some good and creative engineers work with the person responsible for community parks and give us a nice park we...
Read moreOne of the worst childhood experiences and memories are of this community center where I went to summer day camp. Camp leaders were verbally abusive and disrespectful of select children there that they couldn’t control (it’s not that kid’s fault he simply had a disability) and not only did it set a bad example for the rest of us but it also affected our enjoyment of our day camp trips. There should be a mandatory requirement that they have finished at least ECE or it’s equivalent before being allowed to be hired to host day camps. The staff were simply “legal adults” and nothing else. Immature themselves still and if I can recall this 25+ years later… it’s really sad that every summer parents send their kids off to complete strangers for care so...
