Being a wheelchair user I was faced with steep steps on arrival in a taxi whilst on a short break in Rome. There was a wheelchair stair lift but no one answered the intercom button so my partner had to carry the heavy electric wheelchair down the steps whilst I used my crutches which I had fortunately taken with me. My wheelchair ran out of power and I had seen on the Web page that there were charging facilities so eventually found the information desk only to be told there were none! My partner pushed me around and we eventually figured out that there was a bench with a charging socket so I sat there for a while whilst it was charging. We needed to go to the first floor so hoped there was another bench with charging. Getting to the lift was a nightmare- it wasn't clearly signposted and was through emergency type doors that needed someone to hold it open - no good when you're alone obviously. Again not clearly signposted and found the lift by chance. Upstairs there was indeed a bench with an electricity socket and I sat there for an hour only to discover it'd hadn't charged at all 😢 we left shortly after and again found that no one answered the intercom for the chair lift but luckily 2 kind men carried the wheelchair up the stairs for me whilst my partner had gone to find a security guard to ask how we could use the chairlift. Communicating with the security guards was difficult and my partner had to do actions to explain what a wheelchair was. I has set off for the trip feeling confident that my mobility difficulties would be catered for but in fact it was a nightmare. My partner has a spinal problem and shouldn't lift anything and instead had to risk his own...
